On Manners

Tomorrow I'll rave about the Olympics. We have a guest ramble today.

Hi. For those who may have a vague recollection of my 'Story for Christmas'…I have another in the same vein!!

I was moved to ramble after reading of Ze’s glorious efforts to provide a ‘day at work’ for Barbara, several weeks ago. I have to say that you may not be a physical hugger Ze, but your actions speak to the enormous heart you have and that you are, obviously, a deep well of the metaphysical hugs that fuel many folks’ lives. A smile…a wave…simple gifts.

During my walks into the valley below our cottage, where I shop and chat and people watch, I experienced several events that alternately raised my spirits, gave me hope - and brought me down.

Our wee town, like many others, has its share of young folk on skateboards and bikes, riding on pavements and in pedestrian areas. On this day, my polite and measured requests to them to be more careful were met with sneers and rude gestures. My fellow citizens ‘tutted’ and looked away. As a retired Deputy Head of a large high school, I decided to fix them with my best gimlet eye. I am assured by my ex-pupils that this look froze the blood of many in my teaching days. I was surprised and pleased to find it still worked, and the miscreants left with extravagant wheelies and other displays of bravado. I heaved a sigh…

Then as I walked past our Cenotaph, I found two different lads climbing on it. I was incensed and called out to them. They immediately looked very contrite and when I asked if they knew what the monument stood for, they looked ashamed and nodded. They walked away, quietly and thoughtfully. Phew...score 2!! This time I was applauded by several folks sitting outside a café. I had to ask myself why they had not reacted to the disrespect?

Then, as I walked a narrow pavement, a family approached. Mum was in deep conversation with an older child but two wee lads, about 5 or 6 years old, quickly pressed themselves against the shop window to allow me to pass. I stopped and thanked them, and praised Mum for her offspring’s thoughtful good manners. Wee lads beamed and squirmed in embarrassment and Mum beamed with pride.

My heart was lifted and I strode off to the local supermarket. On entering the restroom, I saw a young lass about 10 years old entering a stall. She saw me and came out and offered me the stall. The equivalent of giving up your seat to an elder on the bus!! Again I was able to praise her to her Mum as she exited the other stall. We exchanged encouraging words that there are many wonderful young folks around and that we should look for the good things they do and applaud them. Too often only the bad news reaches our ears. The wee lass beamed and gave me a thumbs up!!

You see, metaphysical hugs work like a dream and should, in an ideal world, be seen in greater measure than the necessary admonishments due, sometimes, to others, less socially aware.

Please don’t think me some kind of ‘good manners’ vigilante, I am a student of human nature and still find so much more in us to be glad for than not!!

Excellent work there, Mel. Courageous, too - it could have turned nasty, glad it didn't.

August Already?

Where is the summer and even 2012 going? Slipping by awfully quickly. Another week at work and the usual awaits me. The summer seems a bit cooler here but I am so not complaining as cooler is much better than hotter. And we do have August yet to come.

My days have been fairly relaxed and taking it easy lately. Yesterday I mowed and did a bit of yard work but overall I have been a big old slug. Laying around reading books. What more could I ask for?

One thing I did today is make the official reservations for our mid winter break in Feb 2013. We are all headed to Disneyland. We took the kids back in 2008, so they get a repeat next year. Something for all of us to look forward to. We are even staying at one of the resort hotels that makes it easier to come and go from the park. A splendid time all around awaits us.

Now back to your updates. Enjoy!

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Summer

Mom is officially back in Oklahoma. Tomorrow E heads back to work. The boys and I will have the place to ourselves. We don't have too much planned. I'll take Forrest to a park in the morning. Cal likely will go with me. Duncan, of course, will sleep.

August the kids are with their Dad (except for a long weekend during GenCon). My August will consist of taking Forrest out twice a week and getting our carpets cleaned. Other puttering around the house projects to be tackled along the way.

Enjoy the update!

Splendid Saturday

Some laundry, a nap, flitting about on the computer and watching the Olympics. That was my day in a wrap. The sun shines but only around 70 degrees, perfect. A very nice Saturday all around.

Here is hoping yours was as splendid.

Enjoy those updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Summer Has Arrived

As the rest of the USA has drought conditions and heat waves everywhere, Seattle's summer finally rolls in place. Our weather has been cloudy with bits of rain (not like Ze's rain rain rain) but the last few days is showing signs of real summer. We have broken the 80 degree mark and had couple full days of sun.

If the weather reports hold true (they rarely do) we may see rain on Sunday, but I am good with that as well. Than I don't have to water the garden or my nifty new mock orange plant.

Been a busy work week. And with my daughter is Washington DC at a conference, I've been getting a lot of texts as she has now found her phone useful. I look forward to giving her a hug tomorrow at the airport.

Here is hoping you all have a great one. If you get the chance the Olympics should be a fun watch starting tomorrow.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Olympics!!

They're here!! **bounces**

Let the games begin and may the odds be - nah - I won't do that - tempting though. *g*

OK - the opening ceremony isn't until Friday but the women's football started today. We hung our Union Flag in the window and settled down to watch (highlights/reply because I was a work when it went out live). We (Great Britain) won our first Game. As did Brazil, and the USA. Both of which looked fantastic. Final between those two?? Wouldn't be surprised. We are playing well but we don't stand an earthly against either of those.

The weather has turned out rather nice - if a trifle too warm really, to be playing football. Since last weekend it's been sunny, not a cloud in the sky during the day, and hot. Between 27 & 29 officially. Though the thermometer where I was working today said it was 34. I was drained of all energy by the time I got home. Too hot to eat. But I am absolutely not complaining!! It''s lovely to see the sunshine after two-and-a-half months of near-solid rain.

Wherever you are, I hope your weather isn't too extreme. Stay safe. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Bats

I'm a bit late tonight - I went to the pictures after work and got home late. I am so going to regret this when I have to get up for work tomorrow. Or rather, later today. In about 5 hours actually.

Went to see Dark Knight Rises. It's not bad. Anne Hathaway made a better Catwoman than I expected - not that I've ever seen a Catwoman characterisation which really portrayed Catwoman properly. (Though the comic doesn't seem to do that either these days). I've seen some pretty dire ones, mind. And I'm old enough (just) to remember Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt!!

Right - feast days - yesterday was Ras Tafari's (Emperor Haile Selassi) birthday - I hope our Rastafarian readers had a good day. Today is Khordad Sal in the Qadimi tradition of Zoroastrianism. We wish our readers of that faith a good festival.

You've waited over a month for brand-new segments on F4F Radio, and starting at 9 PM EST, July 26th, we're giving you two. In the first hour, we welcome back writer/director Christin Mell for her bimonthly appearance to talk about upcoming webseries on Tellofilms.com. This time we'll discuss the second season of the comedy-western "Cowgirl Up!", which begins filming later this year. CU! creator Nancylee Myatt ("South of Nowhere", "Nikki and Nora") will join Christin, just as she did in 2011 to talk about Season 1. Together they'll reveal all sorts of goodies about what to expect from Season 2, including new storylines, characters, and cast members you'll all recognize. Joining me for this hour will be published author Kim Pritekel, a cohost of numerous segments in 2011-2012, including January's show on "I Hate Tommy Finch". And in the second hour . . . well, you'll just have to visit the F4F homepage to see!

Vacation continues.....

Currently in the middle of my vacation with the whole family. We've been taking it fairly easy this summer and staying close to home. And trying to do some local things to see parts of the city we don't usually visit. Also in general saving for the big mid winter break in February next year. Disney calls us once again.

I hope you and your loved ones are safe from the crazies of this world. The horrific event in Colorado will be on cable and news for days. I just wish the media would stop highlighting the sick individual who pulled the trigger, but focus on the lost and injured lives and all those who are left behind. Showing us not how to have copy cats but reminding us how grief surrounds those involved. Let's hope help is available for them.

Wishing all the best to everyone. Peace, Health and Happiness.

As I Was Going to St. Ives

Unfortunately all I met was a load of traffic not a man with seven wives...

I did see Helston (where the rock the devil threw at St. Michael landed), which is a pretty but very small town. I also saw Lizard Point, and had a coffee in the most southerly cafe in the UK. And saw some Guillemots. And a Chough (pronounced chuff - it's a kind of crow, native to Cornwall). And, weather permitting tomorrow we're going to Goonhilly Down (the UK's SETI site - lots of cool radio-telescopes and big dishes), and then on to the seal sanctuary (where they treat injured seals before releasing them back into the wild.)

Bit more for you tonight - and I fixed the link I buggered up yesterday.

Also - Ramadan starts this weekend - a good festival to our Muslim readers.

See you next week, when I'll be back home. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Kernow

AKA Cornwall. I am not writing from my usual location tonight. I am writing from a windy caravan site at The Lizard - the UK's southernmost point (no Land's End isn't it - whatever myths you may have heard about it). I am here unexpectedly and so totally unprepared.

My cousin decided - without telling me - that since my last "proper" holiday was over 6 years ago (before my accident) it was about time I had another. And since she has a friend who owns a holiday caravan on this site she thought it would be perfect. An almost free holiday. She arranged it. Four days in a caravan. To start Monday. And she told me Saturday!!

OhhhhKaaayyy. Well...

Why not?? She assured me it had wi-fi (it does though a wee bit weak). And my new laptop can cope with it, and has a decent battery life.

Of course, my new laptop does not, as yet, have all the sites I sometimes check bookmarked. This means I'm only checking the regular Uber Etc. list tonight. And since the wi-fi is switched off at 8pm I'm checking early. But - at heroic sacrifice (it's bloody windy on this verandah, and a touch chilly) I'm updating for you!! *g*

Regrettably there isn't a lot. But you've probably got tonnes to read still because of the past weekend's huge update. Hopefully there will be more tomorrow.

And it's beautiful here. Gorgeous scenery, loads of great walks. I just wish the rain would stop.

The Calm Before the Storm

Only the three of us tonight. Tomorrow evening we pick up Ellen and the boys at the airport and then we start vacation. I look forward to it. Our wacky weather this summer has made my inner ear issues much worse and I seem to need a lot more sleep these days.

I certainly do not think I want to complain too much about the weather when so many are going through much worse with extreme heat and such.

Now I hope to see if I can talk T into watching Star Trek IV tonight. So the rest of you enjoy those updates!

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Late

Running a little late tonight due to our viewing of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Last night we watched Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Those were second viewings for E. I'd seen them more than that good geek that I am. Not sure when we'll get to watch Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Little e arrives tomorrow and Mom and the boys arrive Tuesday evening. Maybe little e will indulge us and watch a movie that I'm sure won't hold up to her modern special effects sensibilities.

Singing in the Rain

Couple of quick reminders - as per yesterday's update - Caring For Kara, help out a sister in need - new auction items being added daily.

And - this weekend it's International Day of Femslash. There's a schedule for the online Femslash Con.

...........................................................

Well. Not quite singing. (If you've ever heard me even attempt to sing you'd know why). But yep. Rain. Rain, rain, and more rain. Floods all over the place during this past week. Since we live at the top of a hill we've been ok. A lot of people in this county have not been so lucky. The Environment Agency finally lifted the flood alert status from the nearby rivers today.

And I hear that in the USA you've been having heat-waves, with temperatures high enough to cause deaths.

Climate change is real. Honest it is. Please - Save the Arctic.

And on that note I'll let you get to reading. Have a good week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Caring for Kara - Auction Info.

Fandom rocks. The community - hell, make that communities, because we are legion but we are linked - comes together regularly to help its members. I should know - after my accident, when I was unable to work, the Xena fandom, along with some good friends, who just happen to be writers, and a whole bunch of other friends including my fellow grunts on this site, got together and raised enough for me to pay my living expenses for several months. I remain unbelievably grateful, and if any of those friends ever need me - well - I'll do my damnedest to be there...

The Xenaverse has come together in this way on several occasions and helped folk out. I belong to several fandoms and so I know that it isn't only the Xenaverse that does this. I've seen CSI fans rally round to help people in need. And Star Trek fans. Fandom can be a fantastic place, full of generous souls.

Well, another sister needs help.
A message from author Roselle Graskey

A plethora of authors have banded together for an auction to help raise funds for Kara Leonardo. Kara and her partner Stephanie Marvel were in an auto accident on Feb 11. They were hit head on by another vehicle. Sadly Stephanie was killed instantly. Kara suffered a broken arm and multiple fractures of leg and pelvis. Kara will be leaving the rehab hospital soon, she will stay with her mom but only as a temporary thing. She has no other place to go.

We have created a page at Caring for Kara We know economic times have been tough, but any little bit helps.

Kara has long been a supporter of les fic and for us authors she's always had words of encouragement and bought books when she could. Now it's our chance to hopefully give back to her.

The auction will run until Aug 5. If anyone wishes to bid, please run right out and do so, for those who wish to donate something but not bid, we will have a paypal page set up in the next few days. If you don't wish to do paypal you can email Roselle Graskey to make arrangements.

Every single penny donated/bids will go to Kara.

Thank you all. With extreme humility Roselle Graskey

There you go. There is loads of good stuff to bid on. Go and have a look. Bid. You might be lucky and win some great books. If you don'y facing bidding, well the PayPal button is up and working. You can donate.

If you can - chip in folks. And if you're too broke and can't - send good thoughts, or prayers.

A Life Well Lived

The boys' Great Grandmother passed away yesterday evening. The hospital was recommending that she go to Hospice care today. I'm glad she went before she had to be disturbed just to be transported to another location.

This was Cal's first experience with death. He cried when he saw her in the hospital. Kissed her goodbye every time we left. Last night he cried quite a bit. We all got to see her and talk to her before she took the turn for the worse and for that I'll always be thankful.

Farewell, GG.

Our trip to Oklahoma brought us the opportunity to say a final goodbye to Mike's grandmother. GG as she was known to the kids went to the emergency room this morning with shooting pains up her side. She's been struggling with congestive heart failure for the past few months and has been in and out of the hospital. When we arrived in OKC she was just getting out of a rehab facility and was on the waiting list for an assisted living facility.

I spent the day at the hospital with my former mother-in-law. Grandmother thankfully has been out of it since she came to the hospital in quite a bit of pain. Turns out her kidneys had failed. She has a DNR on file and right now is slowly winding down to departing this life. Mike's brother is at the hospital now. I've come home to sleep. Gayle will head home, clean up and then go back to the hospital. If she makes it through the night we'll head over again tomorrow.

I'm glad we got to see her alive and well. She was a feisty sometimes maddening old gal and we'll miss her.

Sunshine

I know many of you in the US are getting too much of the stuff...here's hoping the heat dies down soon. However, for us folks up in the northwest the sun is finally showing itself and we are looking at 5 days with no rain in the forecast and some of those days will be in the 80's. Today was mid 70's and absolutely beautiful. Another few days off for me, hence mini vacation and I am pleased about it.

So enjoy those updates.

Rebels' Day Report

Last year we didn't get to do any fireworks because of a burn ban across the state. This year, however, the weather was with us and we trekked to Mustang, Oklahoma and spent several hours amidst a whole lot of noise and smoke.

We were joined by my friend Tracey, my brother, Mike's brother and his friend Diane, the Alfred family and several hundred Oklahomans looking to bask in some chaos. As usual we took hot dogs and cooked them while we waited for darkness to descend.

I spent way too much on fireworks for the kids but I can feel good that I wasn't one of those folks who walked out of the fireworks place with the $999.99 mega pack. To be fair it was buy one, get one free.

All of us had a great time and we look forward to repeating it next year.

Happy Birthday USA

First - HAPPY REBELS' DAY to all our US American readers.

Went to see the new Spiderman movie. It wasn't bad. But did they have to have so many close-ups of so many spiders?? Wouldn't one have been enough?? There isn't a lot of point paying to see a movie if you're going to spend a third of it with your eyes closed!!

The new 'puter - it's so fast and has so much RAM and hard-drive space that I can finally use that card my sister gave me and get two months free subscription to LoveFilm (like netflix but been around longer in the UK). Because I can now actually watch movies on my laptop without it freezing, crashing, or simply refuse to stream. Excellent. Hope they have that Helen Mirren film I wanted to see earlier this year, but missed because it was only showing for a week... I think I'm going to like having a totally new 'puter. (Yes, I am going to go on about it for a few days yet - I've had 'puters for over 15 years and this is my first ever brand-new one so I reckon it's worth celebrating for a week or two).

My browser's UK version of the dictionary doesn't think movies is a word. But then it doesn't care much for Buffy, femslash, or Rizzoli, either. It's still a better dictionary than anything MSWord has managed to cobble together. Not that I'm using that. I downloaded OpenOffice as soon as I could. Much more to my taste.

It's still raining, btw, there's a very good reason England's "Green and Pleasant Land" is green. We're all on flood-alert again. And people still doubt climate change. Hah!!

Stay safe, stay warm & dry. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

I Haz a New 'Puter

*bounces*.

First impressions. Bloody Ada - what are all these programmes and which ones can I get rid off?? Blimey, what are all these processes and how many can I shut down?? OK, where have they hidden everything?? Where's "run"?? Who the hell thought "libraries" was a good idea?? I hate this control panel. And who designed this "all programmes list"?? I can't find a damn' thing. And bugger - all of my wallpapers are the wrong size. But boy - isn't it fast!! I can't remember the last time a browser opened this quickly. Sometime back when I was using Firefox 3, I think.

After playing around for a while I found "run". Cleaned up the "start up", got rid of a few unnecessary things. It'll take me a little longer to get things exactly how I want them but so far, so good.

I can't see me ever filling up this hard-drive though. No matter how much of my favourite fan-fiction I save to it. (I've got loads - all on cd, because my old drive was too small.)

I reckon Win 7 be fine once I get fully accustomed to it.

And it's brilliant having a new 'puter.

*bounces some more*

Another Monday Down

Another start of the week. A light weight one for me as I went to work for only a few hours then came home early to pick up the kiddo from basketball camp. No luck tomorrow as grandma will pick her up. Today though allowed me another nap in the afternoon. I sure could get used to these on a full time basis. However, while I am still dizzy and dealing with stuff they have been very useful.

Tomorrow a full day lays ahead.

As my usual ramble of nothing is over, enjoy those updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Countdown to Rebels' Day

Our lazy vacation continues in Oklahoma. This year isn't near as hot as it was last year. Last year Oklahoma went through a massive heat wave and drought around this time. Fireworks were banned everywhere due to the danger of fire. This year the heat isn't near as baking and the vegetation is nice and green. Things will be blown up on the 4th for sure.

For all of our Canadian readers...hope you had a fantastic Canada Day!
