Hype Night

Nicola Griffith, one of my very favorite writers, has a new one to offer up in May of this year. A new Aud book, number 3 in the series titled Always. Yippee! This one I have waited patiently for and look forward to hearing some live readings from and perhaps the opportunity to get my spiffy new copy signed by Nicola herself.

If you haven't had the opportunity to read her work I highly suggest you save your pennies up and treat yourself to something grand. I haven't read anything by her that wasn't worth my money or time.

Now back to the regularly scheduled program. Enjoy the updates!

Request from Linda

Linda, frequent UE rambler and all around nice gal, has a request from her niece.
I have a request to make. My niece Victoria's class has started
studying geography this week. To get the kids really involved in it, the teacher has made a game and contest out of it.

They have to gather items with the name of a city, state or country on it. This contest will last until the end of the school year in May. The items can be postcards, key chains, magnets, travel posters or just about anything that has the name of a city, state or country on it.

Each child gets a travel log book to list each item and the mileage from Tucson to the city, state or country the item is from. They also have to find the city on the map. Parents are forbidden to tell the child where to find it beforehand.

The contest is called "How far can you go?" There will be 3 winners of the contest ...1) the most items collected...2) the longest mileage of one item...3) The highest mileages totaled of all items. The prizes are for 1 is a globe of the world. For 2. A coloring book of the United States. The grand prize for the total of mileages is a beautiful bound edition of the world atlas.

Victoria has asked me if I would ask all of you, if you would please send her a postcard, key chain, magnet, travel poster or just about anything that has the name of a city, state or country on it. If you wish to do so, please e-mail me privately and I will send you Victoria's address.

Thank you,
Linda

I picked up my postcard today. If she gets enough postcards this could be the start of a really cool postcard collection for Victoria.

Ebay

Once or twice a year I get the urge to fill in holes in my comic books. Recently I started searching for gaps in my Valiant collection. This entailed much searching on Ebay, which then led to money being spent on Ebay. Too much money. But my urge is about exhausted and I've decided it's time to get my butt in gear and sell stuff on Ebay again. I'm even going to venture into non comics sales and try to get rid of two leather coats I was given years ago and never wore. I'm kind of picky about leather.

Send me your positive vibes for high bids and happy sellers. Y'all enjoy your updates while I prepare more auctions....

Weekend Closer

Few notes for you all this evening. First...Linda Crist is posting parts of her new story at her Yahoo group for all members to read and give feedback on. Another reminder that Sandra Barret is once again planning on giving away another book, details can be found at her web site.

Have a grand week. Now off to your updates, enjoy 'em.

I need a vacation to get over my vacation.

So tonight I return. Vacation, if one can call it that, is over. Good...maybe now I can get healthy. Unfortunately big work week coming up, hence better get healthy quickly. Driving with the flu is not always fun or recommended. Neither is walking on the beach while in a downpour of snow/rain. Throw in a little swimming in lukewarm water and you've got a recipe for the flu that won't go away.

At least my six year old enjoyed herself. Her midwinter break was a success in her mind. In mine it was...memorable. One I would prefer not to repeat ever.

Now back to your updates. Enjoy them.

Finally Friday

E is home but totally wiped. Going on vacation while having the flu will do that to you.

My day was uneventful. I subbed a half day at the school for Tracey's assistant. The kids were good and I didn't get blown away by the strong winds at recess so I count the day as a success.

Recipe Night

This recipe comes from Weight Watchers via my mom. I've had them and they're okay. If you're looking for a low fat way to get some good fiber into your diet, these are worth a shot. I recommended them to a newly pregnant friend who is having constipation issues. I thought she might like a change from the prunes I also suggested.

Fiber One Cookies

One sleeve of Fiber One Cereal
1 pkg Milk Chocolate chips.

Melt chocolate chips then add the fiber one and mix until coated with the chocolate. Drop by tablespoons on to wax paper. Let cool completely before storing.

I melt the chocolate in a double boiler, but you can use a teflon pan or the microwave. I also put the wax paper on a large cookie sheet then put the entire sheet in the refrigerator until the cookies cool. Each cookie counts 1 point.

The Fiber One Cereal comes with 2 sleeves of cereal in a box.

Happy Pancake Day!

To all you folks out there who are eating your pancakes on Shrove Tuesday...hope they're good. I'm going to treat myself to a little cheesecake later on. Mom brought a really tiny one by for my birthday.

E and her little one are at the ocean. She officially has no cell phone service so I bet I won't hear from her until they leave on Friday. I'm sure they'll have a blast even in the cold, rain and wind. Think warm thoughts for them though. They both have colds.

A big update tonight, enjoy them and I'll see y'all again tomorrow.

A Note From E

Today is a holiday in the USA. One in which we're to be proud of our past presidents since we're unable to be anything but proud of the current administration. It's a time to reflect on past wonders but also an opportunity to look forward (quickly past the next two years) in hopes of a brighter future for this country and our planet as a whole. One in which Peace can become the norm and our countries greatness can be restored.

The rest of this week holds vacation for me, but something of even grander times awaits tomorrow. My best friend, partner in crime, and the best sidekick from hell will have a birthday thrust upon her once again. She has already joined me in the ranks of 40's and I can only say, "bummer I won't be around this year to celebrate another one with you, Okie".

So I'm hoping and asking that a few (or many) of you please send Tamara birthday greetings tomorrow, since I'll be away and unable to hassle her personally. I would be ever so grateful if you all could send posts to keep her inbox full while I'm gone.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program, enjoy the updates.

I will chat at you all on Friday!

Hype Night

This one was passed to me (thanks, Jo!). A nifty idea and only as good as those who join and participate. Go to it!
A new award has been announced that will give readers of lesbian fiction a chance to indicate what their favorite books of the previous year were. This award will be based totally on readers' opinions and there are no requirements to be a voter except that you join the award site and be a reader of lesbian fiction. Anyone may join the site and anyone may nominate books and vote once they have joined.

Awards will be made in several categories: Romance, Speculative/SciFi/Fantasy, Adventure, Mystery, Anthology/Erotica/Short Story, Overall Fiction and Best Writer. The nominations must be for books that were published in the 2006 calendar year (January 1 – December 31). The awards site is set up so that anyone may nominate books in any category, but only one vote may be cast in each category.

Membership in the group is now open. For this first year nominations will start on March 1, 2006, with a nominating period of approximately two months. Members may nominate as many books as they choose. The top twenty-five books that are nominated in each category will then be posted and members may begin voting on May 1. The voting period will end on May 31 and the top five vote getters in each category will then be announced as the winners on June 15. Winners will be announced on a number of web sites and writers groups. Winners will receive a certificate indicating which category the award is in and bragging rights for the next year. In years to come, the nominating period will include only the month of March, with voting being in the month of April and winners will be announced on May 10.

Those who are interested in participating should go to the following web address and ask to join the group: groups.yahoo.com/group/LesbianFictionReadersChoiceAwards/. If you have problems joining the group, contact the moderator at missoulawriter@yahoo.com. Feel free to post this announcement on other groups and web sites if you choose to.

There you have it. A group that eventually can give you all trends towards what others are reading and enjoying.

Now off to your updates, enjoy 'em.

Spring Air

Something grand seems to be about. Yes ,the season of renewal is here and I'm pleased about it. Enough odd weather has attacked us and everyone else. For my city Spring seems to be all about. Yeah, looking forward to the overcast drizzly days of Seattle...as it should be.

I'm also looking forward to the weekend since vacation falls on the other side of it. Ten glorious days I won't have to drive in to work. Some spent with a small child collecting shells on a beach. What more could be asked for in life?

Now back to your regularly scheduled program. Enjoy the show.

Last Blast?

It's cold and snowing. Not bad snow, mind you. Just foofy little flurries of powdery snow that don't make driving horrible. Exactly the kind of snow I like. I will admit to being ready for warm weather. Mike's been driving me to the couch this past week with loud snoring. The couch was coooold last night. I'll make sure to have extra blankets for my probable 3 am transfer tonight. Wish me luck with keeping warm.

A Heart Filled Day?

The day in which sappy commercialism has taken over. You know what? Even with all that one can make it what they choose to. Holidays will continue to be a money making source. But just as easily each one of these days can be what we want or allow it to be. One hopes you all had a grand Valentine's and that tomorrow is even more splendid.

Hurry up, Spring!

Our cold weather has returned for hopefully a brief stay. We've been experiencing snow flurries off and on all day but nothing that accumulates. But boy is it chilly out there. I'm just happy I don't live in Buffalo, NY. Now that place gets snow.

Nice update today. Enjoy them and come back tomorrow for many Valentine's Day entries I'm sure.

Ramble from Linda

Here's a nice way to finish the weekend...a ramble from Linda.
It's a bitch getting older....

To my nieces and nephews, I am just one big kid. Mom says I am 49 going on 12. The family will tell you that I am Peter Pan and Auntie Mame all rolled together. I just happen to know when to be a child and when to be an adult. Which makes me a favorite among the kids. They love that I can get down to their level and have fun. But lately adulthood has been creeping into my life more then I like. At first it was little signs. A few stiff joints in the morning. A few saying I thought I would never say like..."You call that music? Well in my day...." IN MY DAY, a sure sign that you are now old.

Then there is my favorite...CRS...Can't Remember Sh**. I will find myself heading off to somewhere in the house then stop halfway there and wondering what am I going to the living room for. And names... I have 4 surviving brothers, 1 sister, 2 sister-in-laws, 6 nephews, 4 nieces and a great number of other family members. I find myself just calling the kids "sweety" because at that moment I can't remember their names. I refuse to go through the whole list of names before I hit the right one like my mom does.

Recently I went for my annual mammogram. I was a little embarassed by the fact that my bust line has been trying it's damnest to become part of my waistline and it's winning. When the lovely machine was flattening my breast, I was struck by the odd thought..."fold this boob in half and you have a taco shell."

When I went for my first mammogram I was in my late 30's and I flirted with the tech. This time I didn't even try, I realized the tech was young enough to be my daughter. Another sure sign you're getting old is when the medical personnel you go to are waaaay younger then you.

In the last two months the last sign of getting old has creeped up behind me quiet as a mouse and whacked me in the head with a two by four. MENOPAUSE!!!!! Hot Flashes, Night Sweats and Mood Changes. The three dreaded sisters of old age. I have been wearing shorts and tank tops in the dead of winter because it's much easier then crawling into the freezer every time a hot flash hits.

I have been changing moods faster than a butch changes channels with her handy-dandy remote. My nieces are quite confused with the mood swings. My brother Bill has gotten into the habit of handing me a bite-size chocolate candy bar (his words: an offering to the demon bitch now living in my body).

I just love getting older.... NOT!

Linda

I'm not looking forward to menopause. My mom has had some fun with it, let me tell you so I do sympathize, Linda. As for CRS...I've had that for quite some time. Having that second kid put my brain on overload I think.

Take a little time to thank Linda for rambling. I love reading these and want to encourage her to keep on sharing with us.

Ramble from Alex Tryst

Yeah ramble night. Take it away Alex!
Hello everyone out there. How's it going? I have something I've been thinking about for the last several days. It's something I've been trying to explain to my best pal at work, but he hasn't quite gotten it yet, so I told him I was going to pose it to the masses. You know, people say that you can tell if a woman is a lesbian or not. People have their various techniques for deciphering the sometimes confusing code women project. Everything from the way she dresses to her fingernails to her hobbies are scrutinized. The way she interacts with others, and the general vibe she puts out are questioned (Obviously just asking is the best method but that can be complicated).

Maybe it's a sign of the changing times or of a younger generation that makes what used to be crystal clear to me a bit murkier. I don't really know, but in an effort to combat that confusion, my wife came up with and I am testing a new way to decide once and for all if she is or isn't. It's called "The Shoe Theory", and it goes a little something like this.

To begin with, "The Shoe Theory" only covers everyday wear. I'm excluding cowboy boots of all kinds for the most part, because most dress cowboy boots have pointed tips and a heel of some sort. Other types of boots, tennis shoes, and sandals are also out. I'm talking about the business casual or business wear shoes that most women have to wear in the workplace or just out with friends.

Here is the way I see it so far. Lesbians don't wear pointed shoes (Lipstick lesbians might disagree with me there.). They always wear shoe styles that are rounded at the toe or possibly squared off at the toe. Heels for the most part are out with the exception of those who are actually trying to add to their height for some reason, and even then, they have a round or squared toe to them, but most of them just don't wear heels.

Conversely, straight women rarely wear rounded toe shoes. They usually come to a point or start to narrow but have the squared off look. They are more prone to wear heels for reasons other than adding height.

The reason this came up originally was because my best friend from college who is straight was misconstrued as a lesbian, which always happens to her, and my wife's explanation was it was because of the shoes. She was wearing clunking rounded shoes just like I was. The woman who had questioned her sexuality was straight, and she had been wearing high pointed heels. My wife, who is about as lipstick as they come, was wearing squared off shoes with a small heel on them. Other than that, we were all dressed in jeans and casual tops for an evening out. It was that moment that "The Shoe Theory" was born, and I've been trying to perfect it since.

Now I've come to realize it's not a perfect system. In fact, it should be used in conjunction with the other typical "testing" we run on each other, but I have come to see there can be some validity to this theory. It has worked for me more than not.

At present I am running a battery of "tests" on someone at work, who I swear is on the team, but she says she's not (My wife thinks she is one of us, too.). Of course everything she does goes contrary to what she says, at least in my book. Here's the rundown in highlights. She plays softball, basketball, football, lacrosse, and field hockey in her spare time. She doesn't wear skirts or dresses. Her nails are kept trimmed and short. She's had the same boyfriend since she was a senior in high school (she's now 23). She's Catholic, and I'm beginning to think I scare her. Call it my magnetism. Yesterday I decided to run "The Shoe Theory" on her, and it came back that she was wearing square toed shoes no or minimal heel (I couldn't really tell.). So I'm still at a loss. I lean strongly for her being a team player, but she says she isn't. I think she's scared of reality. I've been with lots of women in this category. Coming out isn’t always easy, especially in a religious family.

Anyway, I digress. You all can give me tips on how to figure out once and for all without allowing myself to get fired. The point is "The Shoe Theory" I think can be a decisive factor in lesbian "testing". What do you all think? Do you feel the same way? Do you have other theories that I haven't considered?

Comments of course are always welcome at alextryst@hotmail.com. I'd love to hear what you all have to say!

Alex Tryst

Thanks, Alex, for the ramble! If you are looking for more of Alex's words check out her stories at E-Scribblers.com.

Hype Night

Several of you have recommended we check the LJ site Femslash Today. We love this site and you'll find it on our Grunts' Checklist page. Femslash Today and UE are similiar in that Femslash Today checks LJ sites for updates. We don't check Femslash Today for updates but we do use it on occasion to find new places to check. They have many postings every day and if you're looking for even more to read, definitely check them out.

E also wanted me to mention that we've started posting stories that are linked by the Birds of Prey Femslash Masterlist. It's a great resource for all things BoP.

And finally tonight here's something interesting from Bedazzled Ink.
Want to learn the basics of fiction writing the easy way? Want the answers to those niggling editorial questions like:

What's the correct punctuation?
Am I using too much passive voice?
Am I telling instead of showing?
What exactly is POV and why should I care?
How do I know when a story is polished enough?

Carrie Tierney, editor of Khimairal Ink Magazine, is holding a two week class that covers the basics of fiction writing. Fiction Writing: Just the Basics is a lecture/discussion format, so you don't have to worry about having a writing sample or doing exercises. You don't even have to be a writer, just someone curious about what editors are looking for when they dig through piles of submissions.

The class is free and will be held online from February 19th to March 4th 2007.

Visit www.bedazzledink.com/bink-class.html for more information and to sign up.

That's it for tonight, enjoy the updates and keep sending your site suggestions.

Growing

Here at Uber Etc. we seem to be doing that all the time. But that's what we're all about, expanding where we look for F/F stories (originals, ubers, and fanfics) to bring to all of you. With that in mind the best way for us to find more is through you. Are we missing something that you check? Please let us know.

We try hard to update as much as we can daily. We do have limits but are always willing to add more sites and places to check if we can. So try us, send us what you got and we'll do our best to incorporate it or let you know why we can't.

With that in mind, please feel free any time to comment to us either by emailing us or leaving an anonymous comment (available at the end of each one of these daily posts at the website). If you're only interested in getting the update sent to you in email (hopefully once per day) try our Yahoo group.

And remember...whenever you feel like promoting, rambling or sharing (new books, stories, recipes, rambles, etc.) let us know any time. We're more than happy to allow someone else's words to be heard nightly.

So there you have another reminder of what we're about. Sit back, share if you like, and enjoy the updates!

May the Force be with you.

I'm not a religious person but Mike and I both felt it was a good idea for the kids to have some sort of religious education. Since we've both grown away from our Southern Baptist upbringing we decided a Unitarian church would be a great choice. We joined the First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City when Duncan was four. Mike has gotten very involved with the Youth group at the church, teaching the junior high religious education classes for two years and now the high school class.

This last Sunday the high school class presented the 11am service to the entire congregation. The theme was Star Wars (the first movie) and what we can learn from the characters' journeys. I must say the kids did a fantastic job from the marching in with light sabers (complete with a light saber tunnel for the chalice lighting) to the celebratory dance at the end accompanied by the Cantina music from Star Wars.

I had the honor of filming the 35 minute service from the balcony. There's nothing quite like hearing the entire congregation singing Weird Al's Yoda. I'm looking forward to what Duncan's high school class comes up with in a few years for their youth led service.

E Ramble Night

My ramble this evening is a reply I gave based on a question posed by phair. It was sent to me upon my sending thoughts to her on her recent ramble. The question posed was When you really have hope how do you express it in a physical world?

The question arises in an odd time in my life, it has made me step back and think about it closely. I like that.

Hope is not something I've ever looked as a physical presence, but it's truly an incredible picture to think about what that is within itself. However, my sense of hope is an internal part of me. It grows and changes as I do. I would like to think in tandem as necessary, but at times it may seem lower or a bit beyond than at other times in life. It seems to take the lead on the path one chooses to move.

The key question is most likely how does one express Hope. From my perspective Hope is something expressed in everyday life and the meaning of that life. When life is so difficult why would one move forward in it with no Hope? For me it allows that concept of the unknown which lies in front of each us to be something Good and of Value. A path to the Truth of our own life. I'm not a relgious person. I do, however believe in myself and what I need to create and sustain this life lives within me through the choices and decisions I make.

Hope plays a large part in bringing each of us closer to our Truth. Hope inspires one to look forward and seek more. Growing, changing and evolving happen, but with Hope invested into that program it may highlight more positive structures into our future. Lacking that creates a void, sometimes ominous in its size and capabilities to swoop through leaving a bleakness within us. Hope gives us tomorrow.

Sometimes that's all we have.

I hope many of you sent phair your response to her ramble and I want to thank her for making me step back and truly consider what words really mean. Articulating and questioning that which is given is always a good thing.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program. Enjoy the updates!
