Back to Work

One basketball hoop is up and ready to go. Tamara makes the difference. I am not so great on ladders these days. We did get to Costco as well. Even adventured off to the grocery store to fill in the rest of the week's needed items for our planned meals.

Back to work and school tomorrow. Short week for Tamara and the boys as they all get Friday off. Not for my daughter and myself...we will trudge through on the full five day week.

Our weather continues to hold back the rain. I miss it and look forward to its return. At this point that is an unknown.

Here is hoping you all have a great week. Enjoy the updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Saturday

Our day has been nice and slow. A buttload of laundry is washed and folded. Cal and I removed some pesky ivy choking two trees. While removing the ivy we discovered it had been supporting the rickety fence. No big loss. The fence runs along a rather steep hill. Not sure why someone put a fence there in the first place.

Tomorrow we'll brave Costco. E talked about us going today. Then I reminded her what a nightmare Costco is on a Saturday. If you can't go in the middle of the day during the week, Friday evening and first thing Sunday morning are the best Costco times. After Costco it'll be time to tackle that damn basketball goal again. E and little e worked on it half of last Sunday only to discover one of the support boards is in the wrong spot. Hopefully tomorrow's adjustment will go quicker.

The Gods Feared the Deluge

The floods were worse today. York is in trouble. The River Ouse broke its banks. The A1 (the Great North Road - one of the country's busiest trunk roads) is partially closed. There's a block of flats in Newcastle in danger of collapsing because its foundations were washed clear. The town of Tadcaster is in two sections now as the bridge linking both sides of the town is underwater.

And here?? I couldn't work today. Sat in the van and just looked at it. Because the site is flooded. Well - are we surprised?? You build a whole new town on a flood plain. Between two rivers. You remove several stands of trees to build link roads. You even give it "brook" as part of its name. And then you wonder why the fields surrounding it are flooded!!

It seems a bit selfish of me to grumble that I'm losing wages (no work = no pay) because of this, when there are dozens of families up country who are losing homes, cars, furniture. But I'm trying to save to afford the fare to the USA to meet up with friends. And I can't if I have to keep breaking into my savings to pay my living expenses.

Damn it. It is selfish - or at least, self-centred - I have a home. That home is safe from flooding. I have savings, (not a lot, but at least I do have some). I can afford my day-to-day expenses because of them, even without work. But I still can't help feeling grumpy about it. Little E will have left home by the time I get to see her again a this rate.

**grumbles some more** Bah, humbug.

That's a very British thing, you know. We grumble a lot - never very loudly, or particularly aggressively, but a lot. Usually about trivial things. Then we sigh and say, "Ah well, mustn't grumble". And often add, "Worse things happen at sea".

Funny lot, us Brits.

Oh - the header?? It's a line from The Epic of Gilgamesh.

See you next week - if I haven't grown flippers and swum away. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Parcel Post

Tomorrow is Yom Kippur. A good feast to our Jewish readers.

Blimey. Do I talk a lot or something?? Both Elisa and Tamara said they didn't have anything to say - and then both of them said I'd entertain you. Oh, the pressure!! I could get a complex or something... *g*

Actually, I was going to witter away about nothing in particular. (I'm good at that - wittering). Well, grumble really, rather than just witter. Partly the weather - there's a saying that if it wasn't for the weather the British would never have a conversation - and partly the Royal Mail (a much-loved British institution that we love to complain about, but become fierce defenders of, whenever the government even hints about privatising it.

The weather. It went from lovely & sunny last week to torrential downpour at the weekend. And ever since. And I mean torrential. Just today's figures are bad - 112 millimetres in Yorkshire, 100mm+ in Northern Ireland, 80mm+ in North Wales. In England & Wales alone there are 80 rivers with Flood Warnings and a further 139 with Flood Alerts. There's been flooding of a few fields here, but no houses. But "up north" they've had a terrible time of it. Loads of flooding. Especially in Cleveland and Northumberland.

The weather had been erratic and extreme for two or three years now. And there are still those who doubt climate change... and now they're drilling in the Arctic!! One of these days, if we don't wise up, we're going to turn around and realise that we've gone past the point of no return. We'll want to do something to stop the destruction because if it doesn't stop we're doomed - but it will already be too late.

Well that was grimmer than I intended!!

The second ramble. The Royal Mail. (The British post office). They've just recently started promoting this wonderful new idea. They say they've run trials in a couple of areas and they've been successful, so now they want to go nationwide with the scheme. But if you don't want to participate then you can fill out a card and opt out.

What is it??

They want to be able to leave your parcels with a neighbour if you're not home.

Now pretty much everybody I know has gone, "Huh??" in bewilderment. Because they already do that. They've always done it. As I know only too well. Apparently it was never official. It was just whatever you local office decided to do unofficially.

The really good thing about making it official - you can also fill out a card to nominate a neighbour you want to receive your parcels. This is bloody good thing. Because at the moment they leave them with the closest neighbour who is at home. And my closest at-home neighbour will very obligingly take in your parcel, and put it in her hall cupboard. And forget she has it. For weeks. I collected a parcel this weekend that she'd had for a few weeks. In her cupboard were at least four other parcels. I spread the word to the rest of my little street. Several people were pleased to discover that their expected parcels hadn't gone missing.

I'm going to nominate the woman at the other end of the street as my official parcel receiver. It's further for the postie to walk - but at least I know she will see I get my parcels on time!! I buy treats for her dog. *g*

Dialect and Accent.

It's Ganesh Chaturthi, we hope our Hindu readers have a good feast.

And it's Paryushana Parva, good festival to our Jain readers.

Dialects and accents. Both can get you in trouble. There's that whole divided-by-a-common-language thing between the UK and the USA of course. But there are more versions of the English language than just standard British and Standard American. It's a nightmare long before you add creoles or dialects to the mix.

For example - I was reading a post by a USAmerican acquaintance the other day and she referred to her "utes" doing tricks. I was baffled - what kind of tricks can a pick-up truck do?? She was similarly baffled when I mentioned my bewilderment.

Turns out she was talking about a grid-iron football team from Utah. Abbreviated to "Ute". Whereas I, who had been speaking on the phone to my sister in Australia, about her quest for a new vehicle, was still thinking in Australian mode (my sister has been out there long enough to sound completely Aussie, and is a citizen, and considers herself completely Aussie - not English - now). So I was thinking "utility vehicle" - also abbreviated "ute".

We got that one sorted easily, and this time without me "opening mouth, inserting foot". (I do that a lot, usually totally accidentally). Dialect coupled with accent can get you into the sort of trouble where you do accidentally offend people quite a lot, no matter how hard you try not to do it, (though I freely admit that I will sometimes be obnoxious on purpose - but not as often as may appear to others).

For instance - there is a fanfic we occasionally report updates to, it's probably a verious serious fanfic. The author is probably proud of her work. (Wouldn't any author be??). And the potential for me to be accidentally very rude is quite high.

This is unfortunately due to the British Empire's tendency to import words from the languages of the countries it "acquired" - especially from the "jewel in the crown", India, and the habit of the working-class soldiers to mangle the pronunciation of Hindi words. (Bundook - rifle, cushy/cushti - comfortable, etc.) Coupled with the destruction of pure speech caused by a Cockney accent - it means I can not say the title of the fic out loud without it sounding completely ridiculous. Probably not the desired effect. (Though for all I know the writer may be a cockney and may know exactly what they are doing!! I've never checked).

And I laugh every time I type it.

I hope I never have to say the title to anybody else!! It would be really unfortunate...

Enjoy your updates. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Eight Legs - Bad.

It's Rosh HaShanah so to our Jewish readers, Happy New Year.

As for this part of England. Blimey, it's turned a bit nippy of an evening!!

The days are warm and sunny, but the season is definitely trying to do its "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" bit. The evenings are cool to say the least. It's dropped to single figures (Celsius) after the sun goes down.

The hedgerows are full of blackberries.

And spiders.

I'm walking the long way round to get from the bus-stop to work. I am no longer cutting across the fields. There are about 50 million arachnids in the way.

OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But only a slight one. Every single space between two blades of grass has a web strung across it. Those black-and-yellow-striped spiders, that are invisible all year round and suddenly appear in webs all over the place in September are back.

And I am not pleased!!

So Far So Good

Week 2 of school and it's amazing how quickly you get back in the groove of things. We took the kids at my little school swimming today. We go three times a week and most of them love it.

We've also been enjoying some unseasonably warm weather. It's greatfor the days we have PE because we can go outside and play kickball or t-ball. Once the winter rains/snow hit we'll be stuck in our covered courtyard and that's just not as much fun.

Light update tonight. I'm sure Ze will snag a few more for you tomorrow.

Rest

One week of school down, many more to go. The kids at my little school all did very well. Traditionally the first week of school is our honeymoon period. I'm expecting hiccups this next week. Fortunately our weekend has been one with very few demands. A cord of wood has been stacked. Our respective bank accounts have been reconciled. Grocery shopping and more laundry are on the agenda for tomorrow. I will soak up all the rest I can in preparation for what could be an exciting week ahead.

The weekend with no kiddos will provide me the opportunity to get my check book in order.

Here is hoping y'all enjoy your updates and weekend.

The update is late tonight because we forgot about it. Actually I remembered when I got home from work. I even had the text file I use for doing the update open on my laptop. Three ST:TNG episodes later and it was time for me to head to Cal's Curriculum Night. That's when I remembered the update. So 8:41 and I'm just now finishing my links. E did hers while I was gone. Get to reading.

Blast From the Past

Many years ago, when Xena was still running, a new(ish) trend began. The Uber fanfic. This was a different twist on an old theme - that of the AU (alternative universe). It was a new twist because it had canon roots. The very first Xena Uber was an episode of the show. The Xena Scrolls, which was itself a new twist on an old idea - the clip show. It let to a bit of fanfic using Mel & Janice, the protagonists from that episode.

At first the uber was tied very tightly to the show. The characters retained the names, Xena (or a near variation depending on time/location) and Gabrielle. Or they paralleled the back-story. Or the characters had dreams or memories of their past lives as bard and warrior. But as time went on a great number of these stories drew further away. The names changed, the back-story faded into the ether, only the descriptions remained - a tall, blue-eyed brunette and a shorter, green-eyed blonde. Especially as the stories became books. Published, paper, books. They were still, loosely, ubers but they would soon become true "original" fiction, bearing no real resemblance to the show at all. they merely retained the loyalty of the Xenites.

Back then (while the show was still on) there was a series that spanned the gap between worlds - not quite true original fiction, but not quite true uber. It was set in the world of TV (and played very nicely with the suspension of disbelief from time to time). Just like a TV show it came out as regular episodes. It had a huge following, eagerly awaiting the updates posted to the Yahoo group before being archived on that greatest of Xena sites - AUSXIP.

That series was Exposure. And its fans loved it so much that even when it stopped being updated they still followed it. And not just on the AUSXIP site. Week-by-week the yahoo group continued posting the episodes, returning to the first one and starting all over again, and again.

The group still runs. Unfortunately as with so many Yahoo groups where the original owner has moved on, the porn spammers have hit. But - the fans love the story so much they aren't willing to abandon it. As this message from the group shows.

The EXPOSURE group is still around, but due to a spam takeover and the inability of anyone still left of the original owners/moderators being able to boot them(can you believe that not just ANYONE can boot a spammer?), the group has made a move to a new group. If you would like to join go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Exposure2_0/ . You will need to be approved by the owner or the moderator of the new group so be sure to make a comment as to why you would like to join. The spammers are already beating at the door and we don't want anyone who wants to join us (who won't spam us) to be rejected. We just started the episodes over, so come on by and visit with some old friends and maybe make some new ones!

Tena - mod of the new group.

There you go - it's a bloody good read. Why not check it out??

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Rain

We woke up this morning to the lovely sound of rain. I missed ya, where ya been?

Of course it stopped fairly quickly and now the sun is shining. Nice and cool as well today, hence feels like fall is here. They say not though as the end of the week holds some 80 degree days for us. I look forward to more fall myself, but I know others will start complaining once more rain appears.

Enough of our weather report. Obviously lacking excitement and thrills. I say go find a good story and. a small reminder, writers love feedback...good, bad or indifferent.

Enjoy the night.

Hype!

Allaine brings you more femmeslash discussion fun next week.
Let's Get Medieval - "Dragon Age" Femslash

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2012/09/14/lets-get-medieval--dragon-age-femslash
As a part of this busy stretch in September where F4F will air three live shows in just 16 days, tonight we will be revisiting the world of video games. In the spring we discussed "Mass Effect", the successful Bioware trilogy which allows players to not only choose the gender of their character, but also have romantic relationships with various characters, including lesbian relationships with women like Liara T'Soni. So it's quite appropriate that we switch focus to another successful pair of Bioware titles, the fantasy RPG "Dragon Age: Origins" and its followup "Dragon Age 2". Much as in "Mass Effect", gamers can play as either a male or female character, and if you make the right decisions, you can potentially have a lesbian romance with Leliana in "DA:O", and either Isabela or Merrill in "DA2". UNLIKE "Mass Effect", you can also select one of 6 different backgrounds for the main character in "DA:O", such as Human Noble or City Elf. All of this adds up to a goldmine for "DA" fanfic writers, who have as many as FOURTEEN different femslash pairings to choose from between the two games. And THAT'S just the canon pairings. Noncanon femslash fanfics with Morrigan from "DA:O" are almost as prevalent as those with Leliana. Tonight we'll have on 3 fanfic authors, all of whom have worked with different pairings in one or both "DA" games. Sisirongana is known for her FCousland/Morrigan epic "A Series of Completely Unrelated Events". Leogrl19 paired FHawke with both Merrill and Isabela in "Priority One" and "My Tornado". And KalenCaelli wrote the angsty FTallis/Leliana fic "The Last Dance". We'll be joined by cohost Rae D. Magdon, who like Sisirongana was a guest author for my "Mass Effect" interview.

Lovely Day

Well, now that summer is nearly over the summer weather has decided to turn up. Beautiful day today, and the rest of the week's looking good too. Highs of 20c, sunny. Sounds brill!!

I'm shattered. My shoulder's been giving me problems again so my GP made a appointment at the hospital for me. The good news is I don't need another op. The bad news is I need more physio. So today I got more physio. Which means, of course that I'm in even more pain right now, and totally exhausted. And as soon as I've posted the update I'm going to take some really good painkillers and go to sleep.

You have a fair bit to read so I'll leave you to it. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Autumn Already??

Kids went back to school this week, so it's fairly quiet around town and work now. Of course the downside is there's more traffic and the buses are more crowded again. New school year... that means it's nearly autumn here. How did it get to be autumn so soon. I'm sure it was only a short time ago that I was celebrating the New Year.

The Paralympics are great. Ellie Simmonds is awesome. And the wheelchair rugby starts tomorrow (it will be shown on one of the extra channels). It's a shame that folk in the USA aren't getting to see much. You're missing some great sport.
