Where did it go?

Time that is. Per usual it seems to be flying by again as February comes to a close. Tamara and I made a crazy Friday night swing by Costco. A good time to shop there much better than the crazy weekends. We stocked up and filled up the back of the car. On the way home picked we up some gyros and then unpacked and put away our boxes. Dinner is finished and we're now doing the update and heading into a quiet weekend with no kids. We actually have snow in the forecast and I hope that does not become reality.

Enjoy your update!

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Back to the Routine

The last kid went to their other house which means E and I are alone until Monday. Sad to say, little e and Cal aren't lining up for a while. Both kids have different Spring Break dates and their respective other houses get that time with them. This made for a mix up in the scheduling. They may hit a few days together here and there but no more one week stretch for at least until May.

Until then, we'll buckle down, save money, get through school and look forward to Spring Break. Mine involves a short trip to Las Vegas for E's 50th birthday.

Quiet Tonight.

St. David's (Dewi Sant) Day on Saturday - we wish our Welsh readers a good one. Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant Hapus.

Light night tonight, I'm afraid. Still - it'll give you time to catch up on yesterday's updates.

We actually saw some sunshine today. I don't know how long it will last but it's good to have a break from the rain.

That's about all I have to say tonight.

Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Lego - No Go.

It was half-term last week. So young Barbara was on holiday from school. The weather being what it was - utterly awful - there was no way she could come to work. I don't think she was too disappointed. It's no fun in torrential rain.

Her mother and I took her to the cinema on Friday afternoon. To the Lego movie. It had had some brilliant reviews. The critics loved it, thought it was clever, and very funny. They described it as being good for kids and adults.

I thought it was "meh". Very disappointing. There were a couple of places where I smiled. But no hearty laughs. There were one or two movie in-jokes. Nothing I felt overly clever though. Personally I thought the advert they showed before the film started was funnier and far more clever. It was a fairly well-known advert for BT Infinity (a fibre-optic broadband internet & tv service) - but done with Lego figures.

Maybe I just have the wrong sense of humour. Barbara thought it was "ok" but she didn't seem particularly thrilled by it either.

I took a copy of Despicable Me on dvd over for her to watch on Saturday. A much better movie imho. She loved it. I'm taking the sequel over for her this coming weekend. (That really did make me laugh out loud - the minions doing I Swear and minion Village People doing Y. M. C. A. - very funny.

I've promised to take her and her mother to the Minions movie when it's released.

Another Rainy Night

Our standard winter continues. Here is hoping all the folks where winter is out of control get a break. Today was crazy busy as my desk is a bit overwhelmed after returning from vacation. The week most likely will fly by I am sure. Oddly enough I sat wondering at lunch how soon is my next vacation. Not soon enough.

Enjoy those updates.

Ugh.

Mom is safely back in Oklahoma and we're mostly ready for work and school tomorrow. I've been hit by either the start of a cold or an allergy attack. Right now I'd love to drug myself and go to bed. Can't do that until I get lunches made and make sure Cal has all of his school stuff ready for the morning. Maybe the chicken and dumplings I made for dinner will help me feel better.

Another Rainy Evening

Tamara's mom leaves early tomorrow, so this is the final evening. School is back in Monday for the kids and back to the routine work we go. Bye bye vacation. It was fun.

Home Sweet Home

We're back from Portland and extremely happy to be able to sleep in our own bed.

I think mom liked the fact that Portland was a little warmer than Seattle. She certainly liked the warmth of the hotel room. Our house isn't quite as climate controlled. We'll get the fire going for her tomorrow, which will help.

Tomorrow we'll wash a lot of clothes and see Frozen.

Happy Birthday, Tamara!!!

We are in Portland and a bit tired tonight. Been doing lots of walking, shopping and eating. All good. Today Tamara is older. Still younger than me. She was very pleased by her opportunity to check out a full fledged submarine. At the OMSI they had one to tour. I think she would highly recommend it. I skipped the fun as it is a bit small for me.

Overall a good trip with the kids. Spent time twice at Powell's...always a good thing.

Enjoy your updates.

Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud.

There was a let-up in the rain on Sunday. And the wind dropped. I looked outside.

At first I was afraid... Oh God, what's that big burning thing in the sky?? The sky's on fire!! We're all doomed!! But then I remembered that I used to see that fiery sky more often - and it was the sun. Whew. Panic over.

I did some laundry and hung it out to dry. The roofer came over and started the roof repairs.

It was sunny, mild - almost warm in fact. I decided to enjoy it while it lasted because I knew it wouldn't last long. (I was right - Monday was back to torrential downpour.) And so I decided to go for a walk. Perhaps down by the (now peaceful) sea.

Unfortunately the entire population of South-West England decided to do the same thing at the same time. The sea-front was packed. The riverside path was packed. Even the cliff path (the bit that was still open to the public and not roped-off because of the danger of further landslips) was crowded.

I gave up on that and settled on a walk along the footpath north of the city. I knew that would be pretty quiet because it loops around in a semi-circle and crosses open countryside across several hectares of fields. Given we've had almost constant rain for between six to eight weeks, so much that the ground is saturated, waterlogged, and can't absorb any more rain, so it runs off in torrents, it was bound to be a little muddy. That would keep most casual walkers away.

A little muddy??

Well, that was optimistic. It was pure mud. Up to your eyebrows, almost liquid, mud. Mud to gladden the heart of the grumpiest hippopotamus looking for mud to roll in. An ocean of mud.

I had wellies on. Made no difference - the mud was deeper than they were. My jeans were filthy practically to the waist by the end of the walk.

It was great. There were no people daft enough to be there apart from me. The squelching, nearly losing a boot, splashing, soggy mud made me laugh. It was fun.

The fields were empty, bordered by trees, bare of leaves, stark against a gorgeous sky - that deep shade of blue you usually only get in late autumn and early spring - the only sound the cawing of crows overhead. I wondered if they cry more in winter or if it's just that you notice them more because there are fewer songbirds about to drown the croak.

Is there any sound more lonely than a crow's harsh cry above a barren field??

It was a beautiful day. A great walk. And I came home feeling content, refreshed, and rested. What more could you ask of a winter Sunday??

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Running Late

Started checking the sites a bit late this evening, (watching Olympics coverage and lost track of time), and there were rather a lot of updates so it got a little later still. In fact it's half-past midnight now - and I have to be up for work in five hours... so I'm not going to say much tonight.

One thing though. Last Friday - did you notice anything?? Apart from the fact that it was a nauseating, sentimental celebration designed by florists, card manufacturers, and chocolatiers to make loads of money. Which has nothing to do with the (probably mythical) saint it's named for. Who if he did exist died a horrible death.

No?? You didn't??

Well - You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown. Which he did thrice refuse.

Yeah - It was also the ancient fertility rite of Lupercalia. Which probably has more to do with the day than the aforementioned saint.

What?? You mean you didn't run naked through the streets walloping random strangers with a goatskin?? Tsk, tsk - no spirit of adventure. *g*

There you go - things you might not have known - and didn't give a toss about anyway.

Portland Bound

Tomorrow we head to Portland. I know once we get there I'll have fun but I'm never in a good mood just before a trip that involves the whole family. I get cranky and snappish. E puts up with it. She knows I get a little stressed and that's how it shows.

Once we're actually in the car I'll relax. Having everyone in their place and all of our crap loaded releases the bitchy mood. Then I'm finally able to get into vacation mode and de-stress.

Easy Sunday

Cold, wet and windy day. But I got lucky was able to stay home with the fire warming me up. Everyone else was off seeing a movie and I made some Ranger cookies and Magic Cookie bars to take along with us on our trip Tuesday. Here is hoping y'all has a splendid day as well.

Lazy vacation mode continues....

Mom arrived safely in Seattle last night. Her plane was delayed about an hour so no after airport visit to Ivar's. We did manage to get her to Ivar's for lunch today, however.

The rain continues to fall here and I for one am happy about that. Give me rain over snow any day.

Today we picked up Duncan at his dad's house. Tomorrow we may head out to see the much maligned RoboCop. I also want to see Frozen, which has yet to make it to our local cheap movie house. We'll save that one for when little e is here.

Vacation

I made it through the week. Ending on Valentine's Day was bonus. Tamara's mom is on her way here and we will pick her up later tonight. The time of vacation is upon us. This makes me happy. No work for a week and that sounds fabulous.

Here is hoping y'all have a great one.

Vacation is just around the corner....

After work tomorrow our week of vacation begins. Mom's plane arrives in Seattle at 7 pm. I foresee us heading straight to Ivar's since it'll be right around dinner time for her. She has to get her quota of fish and chips while she's here.

We don't have much planned for the weekend and then on Tuesday we'll head to Portland for a few days. Mom is really wanting us to visit Canada one of these mid-winter break trips but after last year's Disneyland trip this one needed to be on a budget. Not sure we'll be able to pull off Canada next year either.

I know all of us are looking forward to the week of vacation. I, along with little e, am happy to be visiting Powell's again. This will be little e's first trip to Powell's and she's very excited. Not sure the boys will be quite as excited about a big bookstore excursion. I can track down a good video game store for them.

And Now the Storm-Blast Came, and He Was Tyrannous and Strong...

The weather worsened. The gale-force winds became hurricane-force winds. The rain came down heavier than ever. The storm hit Ireland first, then south-west England, then Wales. And then it went up the west coast. Occasional gusts of over 100mph/160kph.

Trains couldn't run. Bridges were closed. Football matches cancelled. Trees were taken down like nine-pins. A roof blew off a swimming pool - rather spectacularly. The flood waters continue to rise.

It snowed in Scotland and parts of northern England. Roads were impassable.

The advice was stay home unless you absolutely have to travel in cases of emergency.

I took the advice and I did indeed stay home. (Well almost home). I went to the cinema this afternoon. I saw the new Robocop. Waste of eight quid. The original was better. This one was a triumph of sentimentality and special effects over plot and good writing.

I came home and watched football on tv.

And news reports about the weather.

One reporter described the floods as "biblical". A touch hyperbolic I thought, but I got his point. If we were a stone-age community, unaware of life outside the British Isles, no news, no tv, no internet, no phones, maybe it would seem like the end of the world.

As it is, it's nasty for us, and it's devastating for those losing so much to the floods, but compared to the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, or the one in Japan a couple of years ago, or last year's in The Philippines, or Katrina, or almost any year in Bangladesh, it's pretty minor really.

You'd think, to look at the red-tops (tabloid newspapers), that Armageddon really was on the way. I haven't seen such hysteria in the headlines for quite a while.

Where ever you are, whatever your weather is like, stay safe. Good night and may your God/s go with you.

Raindrops Keep Falling

The roof finally gave up the battle with the gales and we lost part of it. I'm not a qualified roofer so I couldn't even begin to do a proper job on it myself. This means getting someone in. Fortunately I know good quality blokes. It'll still cost us, mind.

So there go my hope-to-get-to-the-USA savings - again.

Ah well, could be worse. At least we can afford to repair it. And we're not flooded.

The floods have worsened. They're still bad down here in the south-west and in Wales, but now there are great chunks of the south-east under water as well. The midlands and areas in the north are under flood alert too.

And the forecast for tomorrow is heavy rain.

Australia still has record high temps and bushfires. The USA still has heavy snowfall - except in California (which has a drought). The Arctic is disappearing. If we don't start listening to the scientists soon there may not be a world for Little E's grandchildren.

Monday's always feel a bit long to me. This week is no exception and a long one ahead as vacation next week means lots to get done prior to fun. I will hopefully breeze through.

Snow!

We got a little bit of snow last night. In our area it only amounted to about 2-2.5 inches.Just enough to make driving a little hazardous. I was very pleased at how well the new car with all wheel drive did on the snow. We had no problems picking up little e from her dance last night in the midst of the snow.

Now our snow is almost gone. The temps are going up and rain is in our forecast. The kids did manage to make it out for some sledding this morning. Cal is out right now enjoying the last of the snow. He'll come home soaking wet and ready for a hot shower.

The rest of our evening holds dinner and getting things squared away for work and school tomorrow. Whatever you do, enjoy the week ahead and stay safe.

Quiet Saturday

We did a few chores but other than that we were nice and lazy today. All of us seem to appreciate it after the long week. One more week then vacation is upon us all and I am definitely ready. My cough continues to hound me. I'm ready for it to go far, far away.

We're still in a cold snap. I think it's supposed to fade away by Monday. We may see a bit of the white stuff tonight, hopefully not much. I think I am ready for an early spring. Sadly I have a couple more months of winter.

Back to your updates, enjoy!

Brrrrrr....

Unlike the Northeast section of the USA we are snowless, however it is plenty cold. Today Seattle was colder than all of Alaska and that does not happen very often. We are to stay "arctic" through Saturday. I look forward to it warming up a bit. Of course the kids hope for snow. Luckily for me that is not in the picture. Tomorrow is Friday and that is always a good thing.

Enjoy your updates!

The Weather Worsens

It's ridiculous.

Half the coastal towns and villages in Cornwall are under water. Plymouth, Torcross, Teignmouth, Exmouth, Killerton, Stoke Canon, Topsham, Budleigh,Sidmouth,Seaton, all flooded. Dawlish was hit so badly that the sea wall collapsed leaving the main railway line hanging suspended in mid-air, and great swathes of road have been destroyed. Trains from Exeter to Newton Abbot are cancelled and the service is likely to remain so for months as it's going to take a long time to repair the line. There are no trains to Plymouth or Cornwall. Exeter Quay is flooded. The winds have downed trees all over the region. Kingsand in Cornwall has been hit hard - doors and windows smashed in by huge waves, houses filled with water, and the clock tower is in danger of collapsing into the sea. The harbour defences at Porthlevan were destroyed and the sea overwhelmed fishing boats in the harbour and sank them. Thousands of people (mostly in Cornwall) are without power.

And further up the coast - Brighton Pier has been split in half.

Three villages in the Somerset Levels have been evacuated as there is severe flooding - the life-threatening sort.

And there's no let-up in sight. The forecast for tomorrow is more of the same. And again over the weekend and into next week.

Oh yeah - and a minor inconvenience really, considering what others are going through - the site is flooded, we can't work, so no pay. But at least I'm whole, not flooded, and so far the roof has withstood the gales. Lot to be grateful for there, really.

The weather (worldwide) is absolutely, completely, stark stone raving bonkers.

Stay safe folks, see you next week and may your God/s go with you.

Still Raining

The area near the river which is usually known as Exminster Marshes is currently Exminster Lake. The houses on the river bank no longer have gardens, they have water features, and if I lived in one of them I'd have moved everything upstairs by now, because after today's rain they'll have indoor water features. We currently have gale force winds (40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts up to 70) and torrential rain. I've been in a monsoon and what we have right now feels every bit as bad - but colder.

And those poor bastards in the villages in the Somerset Levels are still cut off - 7 weeks it's been now.

Apparently California has a drought. I think we've been having their rain as well as ours. I wish there was some way we could send some over.

And Australia has bush fires again. Stay safe out there folks.

Super Bowl Craziness

The Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl last night and let me tell you folks in this area went wild. E and I were checking the score periodically through Twitter but we knew the game was over when we heard fireworks.

Fortunately not too much in the way of property was destroyed by celebrating football fans in Seattle. Still there were some stupid incidents...a bonfire in the University District (complete with burning mattresses) and damage to a 100 year-old pergola in Pioneer Square.

E works on Capitol Hill, home to a lot of bars. She said it looked like a big party had taken place on the streets. A lot like the day after the 4th of July as a matter of fact.

Wednesday a parade is scheduled in Seattle to welcome back the Seahawks. It'll be interesting to see how wild and crazy that gets.

End of the Weekend

Tamara's prediction of a mostly empty store was dead on. Thirty minutes to kick off and only a few men in pajama bottoms buying alcohol. We were in and out in under 15 minutes and that is rare.

I'm home wishing we had started a fire tonight as the temperature has dropped once again. I have a few chores to finish up tonight...hopefully one will be our taxes. Being married we get to officially do joint taxes and, in our case, I think it will pay off.

Unfortunately drugs have taken the life of another talent, far too young, RIP Philip Semour Hoffman.

Enjoy your updates and have a great week.

Hay Day Saturday

E and I spent a pleasant day not doing much of anything beyond catching up on clothes washing and going to the grocery store. It's been quite nice.

Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday here in the US. Since neither one of us cares for football (or American football for everyone else in the world), we'll mostly be ignoring the game and festivities.

I'll probably check my twitter feed periodically just to see how the Seahawks are doing. It would be nice to see them win. It's only the team's second trip to the Super Bowl. Maybe second time will be the charm.

Today's grocery store trip definitely showed signs of folks prepping for the big game. I saw a lot more males doing the shopping and the place was busy.

We need to make a trip to Fred Myer tomorrow for cat litter. I told E we should do it after the game starts. The place is sure to be dead.
