More Oklahoma Fun

Mom, my brother, the boys and I went to Sulphur, Oklahoma today to visit the Chickasaw Cultural Center. It's a truly amazing undertaking that documents Chickasaw history and culture. The weather even cooperated by not being baking hot. If you're ever in Oklahoma, put this on your list of places to visit for sure.

Enjoy the updates!

Saturday Evening

Had a nice slow day with my daughter as T and the boys are off in Oklahoma. Here in Seattle, like Oklahoma, we are seeing the sun. Mid 80's today up to 90 tomorrow. Good news...that nightmare will only last until Wednesday when it slips back into our pleasant 70's. Oklahoma will stay warm until end of summer. Not my thing.

Today Emory and I took the opportunity to go check out the local arts festival. We both had a good time and even got some tasty pizza. Yesterday we spent the day at home as I rearranged and cleaned out the shed. I have a bit more to do there but took today off. Figured I could finish Sunday.

Here is hoping y'all are having a good weekend as well. Now enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Oklahoma

The boys and I are in Oklahoma. The weather is hot and sunny of course. Not too hot yet though. It is, however, way too hot for E. I won't let her come to Oklahoma in the summertime. It wouldn't be good for her at all.

So I've been missing E and soaking up the Oklahoma heat. We took mom to see the new Star Trek movie before it leaves theaters. Tomorrow we're planning on seeing Man of Steel with my brother. Before the movie we'll hang out at Nana Gayle's and swim. Typical Oklahoma vacation plans for us...a whole lot of nothin' and no major plans. Perfect.

Happy

Being American does not mean I am always proud of my country, however yesterday was certainly a day to remember. Bye bye DOMA and hello California soon to be married folks. I think we all should toast Equality and our steps towards it. Plenty of steps to go, but we are definitely heading in the right direction.

Great News

For my US American friends. I'm so damn' pleased for you all. No longer third-class citizens. Farewell DOMA & Prop 8 - you will not be missed. Common sense prevailed at last.

I just wish that SCOTUS had been a little more sensible over the Voting Rights Act, though.

Ah well, I hope my country's government can do the right thing too.

In other headlines... thoughts are with the people of India who are suffering devastating floods, almost 1000 dead so far - toll will undoubtedly rise as the floods subside. Over 100,000 people evacuated from the flood-zone.

And after the feast - a famine. Loads of links for you last night and only three tonight. Still, you must still be reading last night's crop so it won't be too disappointing for you to have so few tonight.

Enjoy what there is. Stay safe. See you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Wimbledon Fortnight

And it actually isn't raining... yet.

Not that I've been able to watch much tennis yet. I saw the re-run of Laura Robson's game - great result.

The reason I haven't seen a lot is because I've been working overtime again. Need the money.

I was saving nicely - I'd got enough for a trip to the USA - finally. And I starting checking flight prices to Seattle in late September/early October (that's when I can take my next holiday).

Then the curse of the home-owner hit. (I'm part-owner of my cousin's house these days.) And it chose an area to hit that I'm not qualified to work in.

Part of the sewer collapsed.

The bit under our lawn to be precise.

Not sure how it works elsewhere but in the UK if the sewer or water supply pipes need fixing the water company is responsible for the repairs - as long as the pipes are under public land. If they're under private land then the land/home owner is responsible for the cost though the water company still does the repairs. You can do the job yourself but you must use a water-company accredited builder. The cost will be pretty much the same whichever you use.

My half of the repair costs will be two-hundred pounds more than I currently have saved. Fortunately my cousin can cover that as well as her half & I'll pay her back in instalments.

Ah well. Maybe next April... I should be able to save enough - again - by then. (Touch wood).

Hype!

Allaine's final show is happening this Thursday.
F4F Ends With Four Foursomes (Final Part)

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2013/06/28/f4f-ends-with-four-foursomes-final-part
Now that F4F has not only marked its fourth anniversary of being on the air, but also entered its final month of broadcasting, we’ll be spending all of June celebrating that which made this program great. Don’t worry, no self-congratulation here, of course I’m talking about the guests. For each show in June, we’ll have on four (and occasionally five) guests who made at least one prior appearance to talk about what they’ve been up to since then. Maybe they’ve continued to write fanfic for the same television show. Maybe they’ve moved onto something new, and moved again. Maybe it’s original fiction now. Or maybe they’ve stopped writing altogether. We’ll also be returning to the show’s roots by hosting shows weekly instead of biweekly, so that’s sixteen former guests, each speaking for fifteen minutes at a time. Tonight we only have three guests so far, as one dropped out, but we're hoping to find a replacement before then. As of right now we begin with Sweetjamielee (who first appeared on F4F on 5/12/2011) at 10 PM EST, followed by BurningEden (8/6/09) at 10:15, and Dhamphir (2/25/10) at 10:45 PM. Tune in, because really, someone just might be talking about whatever thing you love best. And because after tonight, you might not have another chance.

The Letter

T and I have been waiting for it. Our neighborhood is getting transit trains and we've been waiting for the letters to be sent out to all of those properties that are "in the path" of the future tracks. We tried to the sell the house a few years ago, but the freeway in front of the house turned the buyers off (imagine that). So we've been wondering how do you get out of a house that's too small but won't sell? Well getting lucky with a train coming through doesn't hurt. Now anyone out here that knows what we should ask for let us know as our property has been "identified".

Enjoy those updates.

Thumbs Down...

Apologies for the borked link last night - fixed it & reposted today.

Glorious day of sunshine today. Very warm.

All this sunshine we've been having lately is bleaching my hair. My normal colour is very light brown (I always described it as "mousey brown") - with sort of sandy highlights at times. My hairdresser calls it "dark blonde" but I wouldn't have described it as any kind of blonde - usually. At the moment though the sun has lightened it to the extent that it does look blonde. Not for long though. It's also got much too long (for me). I look like an Old-English-Sheepdog!! So it'll be cut as soon as I can spare the time. That will cut all the blonde out and I'll look like me again.

I'll tell you this for certain, mind, blondes do NOT have more fun. They have the same amount as any other disaster-prone idiot!!

Ah yes... disaster-prone.

Well, no great disaster of late. And (touch wood) no really bad injuries. But I have sprained my thumb.

I bet you didn't even know you could sprain your thumb!!

I was attempting to start a petrol-driven strimmer. I was resting one hand on the body of the motor while I used the other to pull the starter cord. Because of my injured shoulder I have to stand at a slightly odd - and somewhat awkward - angle to do this. And this means the hand resting on the motor isn't always best-placed for comfort.

The strimmer backfired and jumped. Result - one sprained thumb as the hand on the motor was bent backwards. Oh and several daisies lost their heads.

Ah well. At least it's my left thumb. And as I'm right-handed I can still work.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Counting to Ten and Gritting My Teeth

I'll be right glad when this contract ends and I can return to the other one.

The two other women on site are good sorts and we can have a laugh. Some of the lads (a second-fix chippy, another painter, and two 2+1 bricklaying gangs) I've worked with before and they're ok.

But there's an electrician on-site who's a prime candidate for encasing in concrete. He's a tyrannical bully towards his two assistants. He's obnoxiously, loudly, constantly, sexist, racist, homophobic, and downright unpleasant. How he keeps his job I will never understand. The only explanation I can think of is that he's got some hold over the site manager - blackmail or maybe the manager's wife is his cousin or something. He is beyond a prat. There are no words I can think of to use to describe him that are fit for this webpage!!

In fact the only reason I haven't smacked him with something substantial is because I've got everything sorted, all the requisite permissions, etc., for little Barbara to spend a day on site next month, and I don't want to do anything to jeopardise that. He will be on holiday that week so she won't have to witness anything upsetting or confusing for her.

After that however...

Sunday Lovely Sunday

Tomorrow will be the last full day of school for me. Well, technically we have a full day on Tuesday as well but from 9:30 to 1 we'll be walking around the zoo. Wednesday through Friday are half days for the kids. We'll be spending a few hours each day packing the rest of the school up. A lot has been done already. It's amazing how much you can accumulate over six years.

Until our little school is gone, I'll enjoy the time I have left working with a really nice bunch of folks.

Slow Saturday

Our sunshine continues and our day was filled with nothing. I like that a lot. I got a nap in and that means the day was awesome. We dropped off the old freezer, picked up few needed items at Target, got some lunch, and then home for relaxation.

Here is hoping our weekend is working out just as well.

Hope any of our readers in Colorado are well clear of the fires. Stay safe, folks.

The weather hear did indeed change today. It got cold & wet again. So I did pack in early. Which is to say I finished at my proper shift-end, and arrived home at my normal time rather than doing overtime. And I'm going to head to be early (early for me anyway) as soon as I've finished this. Which will be around 22.30 (10.30pm).

Need Keynes

Too tired to have anything to say I'm afraid. Been doing a lot of overtime while the weather has been good. Bills to pay etc. I seem to be working harder than ever and having less to show for it these days. Pretty much in common with most of the rest of Europe I guess. Or at least those Europeans who aren't members of governments. When will they wake up & realise austerity measures will not work in a recession?? Where have all the Keynesians gone??

Looks like the weather is going to break tomorrow. Rain on the way. I might even get home early. Yippee. I'm at the stage where I don't care if I need the money - I need the rest more.

Home Appliance Hell

We've had quite the evening. I came home from work, rushing because I needed to get Duncan to a dental appointment (wisdom teeth are coming in). I pulled some rolls out of the freezer and discovered the light was off. I squeezed my rolls...soft. Not good. The big bucket of homemade ice cream for Wednesday's graduation...also soft. Our freezer had gone tits up.

I took Duncan to the dentist while E went freezer shopping. Did I mention we have a large freezer and it's full? An hour later and we're done with the dentist (a visit to an oral surgeon is in Duncan's future). During that same hour E found a freezer at Lowe's.

I'm really glad they had what we needed. And I'm also glad the seats in my van can be easily removed. E pulled up with a large freezer and we spent the next few hours getting it installed. I can honestly say we weren't looking to spend our evening that way. But...I'm glad we did. The food is saved and, as luck would have it, our neighborhood is having a free "recycling" event on Saturday. Freezers are happily accepted. Looks like the seats in my van will be coming out again....

End of the School Year Fun

The school year is winding down. Little e's last day is tomorrow. The boys and I have two more weeks.

Tonight we're going to see the orchestra at Cal's school perform. Last week they performed Annie Jr. Cal did a fantastic job as Rooster on Thursday night and as a Warbucks servant on Friday night.

My little school continues packing up. Our last two weeks will be chock full of fun things, however. The biggest will be a field trip to the Woodland Park Zoo. I've worked at this school for 5 years and every year we've wanted to do a zoo field trip. Finally we're getting one. It should be a blast.

Not In My Name.

It was another gloriously sunny day today. I'm trying to hold on to the beauty that is the English countryside in sunshine and not dwell too much on the awful, depressing, or downright evil things happening in the world.

I'm trying but not quite succeeding.

Things like the fact that a bunch of evil racist bigots burned an Islamic community centre in London, (set up for Somali refugees), to the ground last night. And that those racist scum were probably wankers associated with the bigots who call themselves the English Defence League. Well, I may be half-Irish but I'm 100% English. Totally, completely, sometimes even obnoxiously, English. And those bastards aren't defending me, my beliefs, my way of life, or my Englishness. They are a disgrace to the word "English" never mind the actual state of being English. I love my country. Those pieces of trash don't.

Our old Empire did a lot of nasty things back along, but it also did some pretty good stuff. Some of that good was introducing new cultures, philosophies, beliefs, foods, and people to this little island of ours. We marched into their countries, took them over, told the people that they were all part of the British Empire - told them they were British. Spoke of the UK as "home", as "the Mother Country", so we shouldn't be surprised that they feel British and want to come here. And as far as I'm concerned - if they feel British, want to be British, love this country - then let them come here. We owe them. And they've enriched our society immeasurably.

And it's not as if the English - or Scots - or Irish - or Welsh - weren't originally immigrants to these islands themselves once. We've just been here a bit longer is all.

I love our multicultural society. I love that in the past we've been accepting - welcoming even - of different peoples, different religions, different cultures. I pray that we remain that way.

There'll always be an England,
And England shall be free,
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.

Rant over. Have a good week folks. Stay safe. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Tired. Very tired.

First - I hope all our readers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and The Czech Republic are safe and well. The floods you're having are terrible.

Next - tomorrow is Lailat al Miraj, we hope all our Muslim readers have a good festival.

Here the weather is brilliant. Warm, sunny, temps up to 20c, for the past two weeks.. What with that and the light evenings as we head towards midsummer's day there is plenty of overtime on offer. So I've been working 10 hour days since last week. And Saturday. I'm shattered already. And I'm due to work ten hours for the rest of the week - and Saturday. I'm starting to doubt the wisdom of this. And to wonder if I'll make it. But I need the money.

Tomorrow the boys and I have the day off. We don't have much planned. It's time for them to go to their dad's. I'll drive them to Bellevue around lunch time then stop at the comic shop on my way home.
