Sad Trip Home

I made it to Oklahoma without a hitch. I was, however, extremely tired by the time I arrived in OKC around 5:30pm. My morning flight time meant I had to wake up arounnd 4:30am. Max chose that night to wake me up at 1am for a quick potty trip. Since we don't have a fenced yard I have to walk him out. He always has to sniff around before he finds an appropriate spot for peeing. By the time we make it back in I'm definitely awake. Took me a bit to get back to sleep and then the darn alarm went off. I ended up hitting the hay at my mom's house at 8:30pm Seattle time. Today I feel much more awake.

My grandmother was awake when I arrived but fell asleep soon after. Today she hasn't been awake much but I'm not surprised. Not eating and drinking and lots of pain meds will do that to you. I don't expect her to last much longer and considering I don't want her to pain to continue, that's a good thing. She's ready to go.

A Lonely Friday

T left mighty early for OKC today. We are both tired now. She is already there and off to visit her grandma in hospice. I am home with the sad doggie and irritable cat. After finishing the update I will cut up brownies that were made last night and drive back to Capitol Hill to my daughter's spring concert at school. Then return to walk the doggie one more time and then we all get to sleep, pooch on one side and kitty on the other. Tomorrow brings the dance recital and more dog walking, but not much else and it's Saturday.

Enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Planes

Traveling with our airline system sucks. These companies are vultures. Nickel and dollar you to the point of frustration. Tamara is taking a flight tomorrow to see her grandma as she is heading to hospice and the end is near. T would like to see her while she is still somewhat lucid. The airlines did not make it easy and it certainly will be costly. But what are you going to do? They have you and they know it.

Enjoy those updates.

For the Caged Bird Sings of Freedom

The cage is open now and the bird is free. Still singing. Still rising.

Maya Angelou died today.

A remarkable woman. Dancer, actor, script-writer, director, producer, author, poet, scholar...

Still I Rise my favourite of her poems.

Her books (especially Caged Bird) are not easy reads - but they are more than worth it.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

A Step to the Right.

First - it's Lailat al Miraj, we wish our Muslim readers and good one.

Next - The EU held elections in its member countries this past week, to elect members of the European Parliament, the voter turnout in the UK was appalling - 40% - and if a large part of the country hadn't also been voting for local councils it would probably have been ever lower.

That makes me angry. People struggled, were imprisoned, suffered, were tortured - hell some died - so that we could have the right to vote. The least we could do to honour that struggle is walk a couple of hundred metres and put a cross on a bit of paper. (Or if you can't walk that distance, put your cross on a postal ballot and have somebody post it for you.)

It also makes me worried. Because the extremists will vote.

There's been a shift to the right in many countries.(Including mine.) And in some countries to the very extreme (bordering on neo-nazi) right. Racist. Misogynistic. Xenophobic. Homophobic. Transphobic. Bigots.

Very worrying.

In happier news - I'm still ferret-sitting and she gets more playful and more affectionate every day. I never realised that ferrets could be this much fun. I took some pictures of her and I was going to upload a few - but I broke the little gadget that transfers stuff from my camera data-card to my laptop, so I've had to order a new one. Until it arrives I can't post the photos. They said two weeks... but you know what these places are like, two weeks could be any length of time from two days to six months...

Sunday Evening

It's been a really nice slow Sunday and I am so happy that I can do it all over again tomorrow. We will have a little cook out and than I have to take Emory to her other house for the week, but it has been a really good 3 day weekend of doing very little. All good.

Long Weekend

We've been doing a lot of relaxing so far. E and I managed to do some yard work. I don't often join E in that task because she's too damn picky about what she wants done. My task today was chopping down some tall, cane-like weeds along the side of the road that obscure our vision while backing out of the driveway. I managed to get that done with only a minimum of griping.

I rented two movies last night. Little e and I watched The Book Thief. Cal crapped out on us. I think if he'd stuck around for more than 10 minutes he would have enjoyed it.

Today we're watching I, Frankenstein. Cal stuck around for this one but little e bailed. It certainly isn't high art but I'm only expecting it to be cheesy fun and so far that's what it's been.

Four Day Weekend

Fun stuff to read tonight. Have at it!

A Bit of Ice

Another warm (hot for England), sunny day. And since our garden faces south it's a bit of a sun-trap and usually the area by the house wall is a good four or five degrees Celsius hotter than the street outside. This is not good for ferrets.

In the wild, being nocturnal, they would spend the day in a cool, earth burrow. Snow (that's her name - probably because she's a light, white, creamy with very pale ginger in places, colour) doesn't have the option of an earthen burrow. Since I'm a worrier where animals are involved I was a little concerned about her in the heat. So I've been doing the freeze-a-bottle-of-water thing. You fill a plastic bottle - well not quite full, maybe three-quarters - freeze it overnight then wrap the bottle (now solid ice) in a tea-towel and place it in the cage. It thaws throughout the day but provides a nice cool surface for the ferret to lean against - or drape itself over. When I got home today she was draped right over the bottle.

I've also been soaking an old sheet in water, wringing it out slightly, and draping it over half of her cage. As the water evaporates during the day it cools that part of the cage. I've used that trick a time or two myself, to enable me to sleep restfully, in places where the temperatures have been too high for comfort. Such as Tashkent (51c), Dushanbe (48c and 85% humidity) and Cairo (40c but fairly dry).

These measures seemed to work and Snow has appeared to be quite comfy.

I'm going to miss her when my friend gets back.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

We Won

First - the most important thing....

WE WON THE FA CUP!!!!!

Arsenal, that is. Won the F.A (Football Association) Cup for the eleventh time. England's oldest football competition.

Right - back to things that might be of more interest to you...

I'm still looking after the ferret. (thank you, btw, to those folks who sent advice and website details for me - very helpful).

She's very friendly, totally cute, and, in spite of her owner's warning me about it, she does not bite. A gentle nip or two when playing - but that's normal, even cats will do that - she doesn't break skin or even scratch it. Not a proper dig-your-teeth-in-and-don't-let-go bite.

She is also incredibly curious about the world so I've been back to the pet shop and bought her a little harness and lead (especially produced for ferrets). So now I can let her out of her cage to explore the garden, without losing her. She loves it. The minute she hears me unlock the cage she's there, waiting to have her harness on and be let out.

Dead cute.

Tonight we have something for you to read. Thank Ze for the AO3 link. She sent us that one just in case there was nothing to post once again.

Storm vs. Sparks

The Storm opening game didn't turn out so well. The Los Angeles Sparks won handily 80 to 69. The Storm has a lot of new players this year and I think it's just going to take time for them to gel. We'll see how they play by the end of the season.

We had a nice bit of luck today, however, when the two Ultimate Frisbee games went off with no rain in sight. These games were the final two of the season. Little e's team ended up taking 2nd place in their division. I know they were disappointed but they had a good season and the team that took 1st place is scarily good. Plus I know next year little e's team will be even better.

Go Storm!

The Storm season opener is tonight. We have tickets and will be leaving soon for some pizza and basketball. Our nice weather of course is coming to a halt as the rain is to return early tomorrow. Hopefully not too early as the Ultimate Frisbee games are at 9a and 1030a, it would be nice if those were rain free. Meaning I best bring the rain gear. Not a lot of other plans this weekend, hopefully I can slug out for a bit.

Enjoy your weekend and the update.

Summer is on the way....

We've had some lovely weather this week...no rain and temps in the 70s and low 80s. The weekend forecast will bring us cooler temps and rain. I'm sure Max will appreciate that. He never complains and is always ready for his walks but this warmer weather has brought on the panting.

Wem-ber-ley, Wem-ber-ley

Want to try your hand at writing fanfic?? Have a go. Sign-ups are now open for Shatterstorm Productions Dog Days of Summer Advent Calendar.

The ferret is still a little nervous about the crackle tunnel, but she's started exploring the climbing frame/ladder/dangly ring thing. She still loves the ball, chases it all over the cage.

And she still hasn't even tried to bite me.

The weather was brilliant today. Top temp of 19c. And tonight's moonrise was spectacular. The rest of the week is supposed to be warm & sunny too. And my lads are in the FA Cup Final on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Gonna be a good week. *g*

We're on the road with Arsene's Army,
We're all going to Wem-ber-ley,
And we'll really shake you up
When we win the FA Cup,
Coz Arsenal are the greatest football team.

Enjoy your updates. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you..

Ferretting Around.

The weather (as predicted) has turned a bit iffy. What the forecasters refer to as "changeable". In other words you never know what to wear because one minute it's warm and sunny and you're regretting wearing a t-shirt and a long-sleeved shirt and the next you're soaking wet, freezing, and wishing you'd worn two jumpers (that's "sweaters" for the Yanks) as well.

But... the swifts are back!! So summer is almost here.

I'm having fun at the moment, looking after a ferret. I've had it here since Friday. It belongs to a friend who's in Crete for three weeks for her nephew's wedding. I've never had a ferret before. I had to google to find out how to take care of it. I was warned she bites, but so far she hasn't bitten me. Feeding her is no problem as my friend brought a bag of pelleted food for ferrets as well.

She seemed delighted to see me whenever I approached her hutch. (It's a two-storey wooden thing with a wire-bar front, and a closed in sleeping section). And I couldn't understand why, since I'm not her owner. I finally figured out that the poor little mite is bored rigid and just pleased to have something - anything to do or see. She has a litter-tray, a food bowl, water, and a blanket in the hutch. And that's all.

So I promptly went to the pet shop and spent twenty-five quid on ferret toys. I got her a crackle tunnel, a sort of climbing frame, and a plastic ball (about the size of a cricket ball) with a bell inside.

She's not sure about the crackle tunnel but she loves the ball.

I'm sure that's the only reason she bites - stress and boredom.

Apart from being a bit whiffy she's a lovely little thing.

Summer is on the way!

This week should bring us views of summer. I look forward to it, but not nearly as much as those outside kitties do. They lap up the sun to the point of over heating. Pet the small fuzzy thing and she is burning up hot. Wait 'til we are in the 80's mid week. For us wimps where the average summer temp is around 73 degrees 80 is darn hot. Even so I look forward to feeling the heat.

No kids this week makes it a slower week for us and this weekend will bring the last Ultimate Frisbee game where they play for 1st or 2nd place. Well done regardless of where they end up. And Cal is off to camp from Tuesday through Friday so he will also be off enjoying the sunshine.

Here is hoping your week goes well and we will chat at you towards the end.

Enjoy the updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Happy Mother's Day

It's a beautiful, sunny Mother's Day here in the US. We went out for a not very good late lunch at a local Mexican restaurant. I think next year I'll just cook.

Other than that we've been slugs. Well, E has done some laundry but that's nothing unusual. I finalized Cal's packing for his Camp Caber trip with the sixth grade this week.

As I write this Max is snoozing beside me. The rest of our day will include a few more walks.

Mine in particular can fall off right now. It is compacted and draining non stop today. I feel cruddy since Tamara shared her cold. A nice gray rainy day, wish I could crawl into bed early. And Then It Rained

Again.

I celebrated the good weather too soon. It rained again today. And the forecast for the rest of the week looks pretty bad.

Ah well.

Maybe we'll have a good summer. We did last year.

There isn't a lot for you to read tonight, I'm afraid.

So I'm back to our regular request. ... If you know a site we could check, (that isn't a chaotic self-posting site like FF.Net), please - let us know.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

The World's Favourite Season.

Spring is well under way. Loads of bluebells around. The apple trees are in blossom. The swallows are back and nesting. Brilliant.

Mayday bank holiday - for a change it was warm and sunny. So we went for a drive. A long one. To Dorset.

I finally got to see the Cerne Abbas Giant. I've been meaning to have a look at that for years.

Not sure if I was impressed or not. I think I was a lot more impressed with the Uffington White Horse which I visited back in the 1990s.

It was a gorgeous day though, and a beautiful drive. Today was another pretty nice day. Shame they reckon next weekend will be raining heavily again.

Cats and Dogs Still Living Together

We're back at the work/school routine. The kids are once again lined up on their weeks, which makes it much easier when it comes to cooking dinner.

Max is settling in quite nicely. We think he and Beanie had an encounter while were gone on Saturday. Max is now completely cowed around Beanie and Beanie required a trip to the doc to deal with a hurt paw.

We think Beanie scrambled up or over something in a hurry and turned a few of his claws back. Max didn't have a scratch on him but whatever happened he knows not to mess with Beanie. And that's just as it should be.

A Very Rainy Sunday

Today seems to be a duplicate of yesterday's rain, light rain, gray clouds and back to heavy rain. Yesterday broke records for rainfall, in fact it brought us the monthly average in one day. I am assuming today will bring as much or maybe even more. That's a lot of rain. I love some of it and am ready for a break from this heavy rain. Perhaps back to the Seattle drizzle would be nice. The downpours can stop anytime.

Enjoy your updates.

Saturday Fun

E is off at little e's double header Ultimate Frisbee match. I'm here at the house with Cal, Max and Beanie. I would have gone but it's raining and kind of cool outside and I'm battling either allergies or a cold. Or allergies that have turned into a cold. I didn't think being cold and wet would help me.

We made it to Free Comic Book Day at my local shop. We also watched the kids from little e's school do their May Faire dances. As is the case every year, the kids did flawlessly with their dances and that May Pole is now wrapped in colorful ribbons.

All in all, a full Saturday especially for E. I hope she wears her rain gear.

Cats and Dogs Living Together

Beanie has adjusted to Max enough that they will both sleep on the bed with us now. Beanie can even stand being in the same room as the dog. He still won't tolerate Max coming near him. Max is showing remarkable restraint since I know he's dying to go up to Beanie and give him a good beagle sniff.

I didn't have to do as Claudia suggested and let the gates make a loud clattering noise as they fell near the dog. Max was content to be with me while Beanie adjusted. We still have the gates up but only shut them during the day when we're at work. Max doesn't seem too interested in being in a room if there's only a cat in it.

Free Comic Book Day is May 3 in the US and participating comic shops around the world. Check to see if your local shop is participating and stop in for a few free comics. Keep in mind the comics are free to us but the shops pay for them. Spending a little money in their establishment is always appreciated.
