Tools of the Trade

Each artist has a set they use to create. Regardless of the art that's created the tool allows one to turn that gift and skill into something splendid. Whether we look at the physical, mental or the combination each person uses tools to produce their art.

Tonight while hunting through our links I ran upon a fun side journey. A tour into the toolbox of an artist, Kris Dresen.

I enjoyed the Draw for Me tour. It gives us a small glimpse of her tools of the trade--the pieces that allow the talent to flow from within. Check out the rest of her Girlthrow site. You will be glad you did. There is a lot to offer for everyone.

So now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Enjoy your updates.

Rain

It's rained all day. Since we're not used to a lot of soggy weather the rain has curtailed soccer and t-ball tomorrow. In E's neck of the woods they play rain or shine. Here we'll call a halt when things get too wet. Currently we're breaking a record for March rainfall. Soon enough we'll be breaking a record for drought. That's life in Oklahoma.

Believe It or Not

On the group email list yesterday Tamara only sent out the update once. Welcome to the land of Yahoo. Sometimes odd things happen and Yahoo gave each of us that update 10 times. As much as I enjoy the updates I found that one to be a bit tedious. Today let's hope all is well again in the Yahoo Group world.

Now on to the wonders of words by others. Enjoy your updates.

Recipe Night

Quick hype before we get to our recipe evening. Dreams has opened up her re-write of The Blind Side of Love. Chapters 1-6 are completed and perhaps if she gets folks letting her know what they think we can see more fairly quickly. I personally will take the time to read this one soon. Now on to recipe night we go.

Cherokee Echols has supplied recipes for a dinner she recently served. Check back next Tuesday for the next batch. Take it away, Cherokee....
Bean Soup

Ingredients:
1 lb. dried Pinto Beans
1 medium Onion Chopped
8 Slices of Bacon finely chopped
1 small can chopped green chilies
1 can Yellow Hominy
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
1 can Rotel
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 lb. hamburger meat
1 teaspoon garlic
1 Tablespoon Chili powder
1 teaspoon Cumin
1 teaspoon Oregano
1 teaspoon black pepper
Salt to taste

Directions:
Sort and wash beans. Soak in cold water over night. Place soaked beans in a pot of water and cook as per directions on bag. Add to the beans all the other ingredients and cook on medium heat at least 1 hour. If you like a thick stock take 1 cup of the beans and puree in a blender then add back to the soup to thicken. The more this soup cooks the better it tastes (add water or chicken broth as needed). This is good served over a bowl of rice topped with sharp cheddar cheese.

Thick Corn Tortilla...Sorta

Ingredients:
1 Box Jiffy cornbread mix
1 cup milk
1/2 cup grated longhorn cheese
1 finely chopped jalapeno
3 Tablespoons finely chopped onion

Directions:
A package of cornbread mix normally calls for 3/4 cup of milk. Here we will use 1 cup. 1/2 cup of grated longhorn cheese, 1 jalapeƱo pepper finely chopped, 3 to 4 tablespoons of onion finely chopped. Mix all together, let chill a few minutes. We are making pancakes. Get out the griddle put over medium heat, well greased, pour mixture and cook 4 or 5 minutes on each side. Cut each one in pie like slices. We can call this a thick corn tortilla that tastes like cornbread.

Cherokee

Thanks Cherokee and once again join us next Tuesday for more of her recipes from her dinner.

Until then enjoy your updates and don't forget feedback goes a long way for these writers.

Weekend Wrap

Once again another weekend seems to have flown by. One hopes you all had a good one and that the week ahead is splendid.

I do want to take the time to thank Danyel for her advice with Midnight. I will gladly accept any advice you have on keeping this gerbil alive. I always appreciate your comments, suggestions and words you choose to share. Once again thanks.

A New Rodent

Midnight joined our house of fun yesterday. A very young gerbil has brightened the weekend for one 6 year old. Actually he seems to be much more suited for us anyway. He is more apt to be awake and coherent in the day and likes to interact with humans. Hence we're able to pet him more without fear of bites. Another bonus is he's not a heavy user of the frickin' wheel in the middle of the night.

Enough rambling here. Hopefully the weekend be going well for you all.

Enjoy your updates!

Ramble from Linda

Here's a nice way to end the week...a ramble from Linda.
Victoria has become the latest victim of the family curse. Bwa ha hah ah!! Nothing too sinister...she needs glasses. That is the family curse. Every last single one of us have bad eyes. All the brothers, me and my sister, all the nephews and now all the nieces. Victoria was the last to fall victim until a new crop of kids pop up in this family.

With her sister, Ellie, she wouldn't tell me she had trouble with her vision. She thought she was too cool for glasses and thought her friends would laugh at her. But one day I caught her. We were standing in Taco Bell and I realized Ellie couldn't see the menu on the wall. If she had leaned over that counter any further she could have gotten her own food. Now I can only get her to wear them when she has to read. Plus her teachers all know she has to wear them to see the board. Poor kid can't win. Oh, the trials of being a teenager. LOL

Victoria on the other hand, came right up to me and said, "I can't see crap!!!" (her favorite word these days) OK. Off we went to find out why. She has a small problem with her far sight (seeing close up) and a huge problem with her near sight (seeing far away). She is now the proud owner of a nice wire frame glasses. She looks so cute. But of course I can't say that. Victoria says that they make her look smarter.

Ah, do I tell her that one day when you reach your 40's it gets worse? One day you discover that your arms are not long enough to read a book? Or if you get that TV guide any closer to your face it will be behind you?

I tried to ignore the hints my eyes were giving me during the last year of my 30's. But I waited until my 40th birthday to admit defeat and went and got bifocals. I was tired of having ink smears on my nose. A sure sign that you need them. And guess what? I lived. Haha!

Now I am about to turn 50 and I'm teaching a new generation of kids the joy of picking out the right type of frames, how to take proper care of them and to wear them proud. For without them you tend to bump into things.

Except if you're a teenage girl who would rather not see the cute boy at the end of the mall all the girls are pointing at, than to look un-cool in your glasses.

Linda

We're afflicted with that curse as well. Duncan will be getting his eyes checked this summer. He may be able to put the glasses off for awhile because he's not as big a reader as Mike and I were at his age. Then again...he gets a lot more computer time than we did so he may be sporting new specs soon.

If you haven't sent a postcard or a representative state/country object for Victoria's school project, email Linda for her address and pop it in the mail. You've got until May.

Weekend is on the Horizon

Not a lot of words tonight. I will break the sad news to my daughter that Nibbles II (the second) officially died yesterday. She was with other mom last night, so I get to give her that news tomorrow to start the weekend. Here is hoping it improves from there.

May you all have a grand Friday and Weekend.

Enjoy the updates.

More Spring Break driving today. Took the kids to Leonardo's Discovery Warehouse in Enid, Oklahoma. It was nice...very children's museumy and not too crowded. Home now and I'd like to take a nap. Phone calls beckon and I must perk up.

Productive Day

Today mom, the kids and I took our annual Spring Break trip to Lawton to visit the tax guy. He's actually mom's tax guy but my brother and I tag along (he's in spirit only) and pay to have our taxes done by him as well. He makes a tidy sum for less than an hour's worth of work because mom's trained us right and our information is always tidy. No messy shoe box full of receipts for us, it's all itemized on an Excel spreadsheet and all of the important paperwork is neatly paper clipped together.

My dad will be disappointed this year because they're actually getting a refund from the state. He likes to owe every year because he doesn't like the government getting interest on his money. Good news...they owe for Federal.

Me, I like the government to have my money's interest. That surprise every year of how much we're going to get back makes the trip to Lawton worth it. Well, we also get to visit K-Mart. All of the Oklahoma City K-Marts closed a few years back and we kind of miss them. Actually I still miss K-Mart because the Lawton one is but a shadow of its former self. I couldn't even find any good toys to buy this trip. I bought a nylon kite and two packages of socks.

First Attempt

Freedom is a good thing. However, today I denied the hamster that right. It's a good thing too. He wouldn't live long free in this household. His first escape this morning and he lived to see another day. One very disappointed cat is also living to see another day. And needless to say, my six year old was very happy with the outcome.

Trying to catch a hamster darting frantically under and around the couch and keep the cat away at the same time was not something I would like to repeat. My daughter was very upset but keept her cool. The cat puffed up to the size of a small dog she was so excited.

Luckily all ended well but I'm sure from the hamster's view another day was lost. But hey we did feed him once we put him back in and the kitty threat has been lowered.

Here's hoping the first and final attempt has been made.

Enjoy your updates.

It's not easy being green....

As I'm typing this I'm being assaulted by the sound of drums. Cal's friend Tanner is playing them while Cal pounds on the electric piano.

I told E I didn't know what to write about so she offered to write something cute about Saint Patrick's Day. Maybe I should have let her but, as she put it, I'm a stubborn fucktard. I don't have anything cute to say about St. Patrick's Day. I did tell my oldest son he'd better not pinch me for not wearing green. He ignored my threat and pinched me anyway.

Have fun if you celebrate this odd holiday and be safe.

Spring in the Air

Sure feels like it in my city. Our bulbs and trees are all sprouting happily with plenty of spring rain and even sunshine in between the typical Seattle gray day. The plants are not alone, both pets and people seem to be energized and in good moods. Perhaps this is why this season is my favorite?

Another weekend arrives after a long hard week. One in which I hope to squeeze some yard work out in between our spring showers. I may even be able to get to a park and feed a duck or two with my daughter.

One hopes you all have a grand weekend, regardless of the season.

Enjoy your updates!

Hype Night

Received this from Nene & Corrie's Yahoo group today. Check out their offerings and spend a little cash if you've a mind to.
Just a short note to let you know the latest happenings:

First, we've started an exciting new project with a (paper) greeting card company, making greeting cards with Corrie's fun, colorful and whimsical illustration work. There are cards for every occasion including birthdays, holidays, invitations, business, etc. New cards are added several times a week to the collection, so whenever you visit, you'll find fresh new designs. The cards can be ordered by you
on-line and either sent to your door, or mailed directly to the recipient with your personal message. You can even order a card to be delivered on a certain special date! At the site, you can also vote for your favorite Corrie Kuipers design or rate designs you like.

Check out the store - www.greetingcarduniverse.com/corrieweb.

Second, Nene has received some special bookmarks from our printer. The bookmarks come in a set of two and are printed on good quality cardstock using black-and-white images from the 19th century. Nene designed them herself and they're very pretty, and very suitable for fans of the Gaslight series. She'll be posting a picture of the bookmarks at her site in a little while. Who can get these bookmarks? Anyone who donates 5 Euros or more via PayPal to help support the Living Library and CorrieWeb. Why a minimum donation? Because international postage from Holland would put us out of pocket and we can't afford the expense, otherwise we'd be giving them away.

Supplies are limited to 100 sets of two bookmarks. When they're gone, they're gone! Nene can also sign them, if you wish. Don't forget, the third Gaslight novel, The Witch's Kiss, will be published later this year by PD Publishing, so you might want to get a set of bookmarks to go along with this much-anticipated novel, or with your copies of the first two books in the series.

You can also still purchase exclusively designed laminated refrigerator magnets inspired by the Gaslight series, either singly or in sets Designs now also include Victorian Prose & Poetry, Crime Headlines, etc. Check it out - www.corrieweb.nl/gaslight/papergoods.htm.

Stay tuned for more updates and have a groovy day!

Fat and Happy

A semi-healthy 6 year old flew into the house today after school and immediately let me know that Nibbles is really big, hence he must be really healthy. All I could say was let's hope so.

One Hour Gone...Bummer

Hope those of you who jumped ahead this weekend won't have too much trouble getting up in the morning for work. For me comes the big decision about whether or not to change the clock over the computers or just wait until we switch back and the time will be correct again. That worked last time after all.

Nibbles II the Second

Yesterday I went to feed the new household pet and to my astonishment in 5 short days he had already died. So today, after spending a good portion of it at work trying to catch up on things, I made a side trip to PetSmart on my way home. I had hopes of replacing the little fuzzy beast before my daughter returns to my place on Monday.

I was in luck...one honey bear hamster left. I purchased him, got home, washed out the Critter Trail habitat, put him in his new abode and hoped for the best. What is best? One, my daughter does not even notice the switch. Two, hope the new Nibbles lives to his full life span of 5-7 years. If that can be accomplished, all will be well.

But as I was watching the new Nibbles moving around I realized he's a bit larger than the other guy. Hence this may be why he seems to be getting stuck in the tubes of his new home. Gee I sure hope my daughter doesn't notice and that he works that issue out by Monday. I can say his food must be agreeing with him.

There are times I find myself doing things I would not normally do. But hey, why make a 6 year old sad when a replacement can be gotten so easily? Wish me luck.

Now off to your updates. Enjoy them!

Friday

My last night of calls for the week. It's always an interesting one because many folks go out on Friday evening. This means I start later and usually end up calling until the cut off at 9.

It's always a crap shoot as to whether or not it's going to be a productive night. The best lists are ones that haven't been hit up by another organization (or two) within the last couple of weeks. If you have the misfortune of getting a list that's been called many times before you end up with more hang ups and annoyed people on the other end of the line.

One organization in particular is the bane of my existence. Too many times their callers have gotten the jump on us. It makes me wonder if the organization I call for ends up being the bane of some other telemarketer's existence. Is someone else writing "Arrrgh!" on their call sheet because our telemarketers have beaten them to the punch?

Off to my night of calls. Y'all enjoy your updates.

Dangers of Costco

Today a co-worker and I slipped away for a long lunch. One where I drove us down to our local Costco store. Now if you've never been to Costco or a warehouse type store like it, my advice is stay away. They suck money from you without you even noticing. What you hear is your words of "wow, what a great deal".

Did you need 40 of them? Sure it was a good deal and eventually you'll use them all up. Did you need every Bond movie released on to DVDs with their extra goodies thrown in to make the set special? Of course! And where else are you going to get good cheese for $5.99 per pound. Who says I won't eat the whole 8 pound block before it goes bad?

My co-worker bought the Pork tenderloin. Mind you a 4.5 pound one for him and his girlfriend for dinner. I suggested they invite another couple or more to help them out. Of course his more expensive item was the Brita filters. Perhaps it's because they come in the 10 pack, but darn it, it was a good deal when you figure out the per item cost. So $500 dollars later we headed back to work. I dropped him off at his apartment so he could put away all of his items that need refrigeration.

He returned slightly perplexed. He got it all in, however he was thinking the girlfriend was not going to be happy about how he used what little space is in their apartment up with the 60 pack of Top Ramen and the box that actually is 4 boxes of Pop Tarts or his dual box of Honey Nut Cheerios and various other items that needed to be stored on the one counter of the kitchen.

But it was all a good deal. And we did have fun.

So now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Enjoy.

Recipe Night

My Ebay selling continues. E thinks I'm far too anal about how my auction pages look but I believe in letting the potential buyer see exactly what they might be getting. No room for confusion with my Ebay auctions, no sirree.

So I figured tonight would be good for a recipe. My mom brought this back from my cousin Meredith's wedding. I'm sure she didn't come up with the cookie recipe but they were a wedding favor (a cookie and two cookie cutters with recipe attached) and being the one who did all the work and the bride she naturally got to name them.

They're darn easy to make and you'll get the best cookies for using cookie cutters on. I even purchased a set of dinosaur cookie cutters on Ebay so Cal and I could make them for his snack day. The class has already been treated to two times of fish cookies. I don't go that extra step and put icing on the cookies (too messy) but I do put colored sprinkles on each uncooked batch. They're delish.

Meredith's Sugar Cookies

1 cup Butter
1 cup Sugar
1 Large Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
3 cups Flour

Cream softened butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla. Mix until blended. Add baking powder and flour one cup at a time, blending completely between additions. Continue mixing until dough forms a ball. Bake in 400 degree oven for 7-9 minutes. Watch carefully as cookies should only brown on the edges not the top. Cool completely. Mix water and powdered sugar to make a thick icing. Ice and decorate cookies (optional).

Words are amazing things.

They can be light and fun and others can cut us down without someone meaning to. But here we seem to be short on them from time to time. Do you realize Uber Etc even being fairly new has given you an update, rain or shine, for 300 days in a row? Of course we've those times were you folks in the Yahoo group got multiples as well. And let's not forget our wonderful stretch of ISP issues, but over all, day in and day out we've suceeded I think in our goal to bring you daily updates consistantly from a variety of places.

We even throw in those dandy recipes from time to time. And other nifty events would be the Hype nights of something cool happening. But both Tamara and I appreciate even more the opportunity to share this space with you all. Hence come ramble for us, we do appreciate it!

Send us those rambles, recipes, and things to hype and we will do our best at getting it out to you all. Thanks so much for being there. In the end this site is only as good as the updates (authors and their words) and those who care enough to read them.

So a reminder...share with us and we'll share with you. While you're at it, send your thoughts to all the great folks who share their time and effort with all these stories we post.

Have a great evening and enjoy your updates!

Nibbles

The new addition to our growing list of pets is a honey bear hamster named Nibbles. We were warned by the helpful sales clerk that he will bite when scared but if we continue to be calm with him our opportunity to pet him regularly will be there. Also he let me know that they sleep the majority of the day and are awake at night. Both seem true.

He may be a fat little furry beast but he does bite hard and let's just say last night he enjoyed his new Critter Trail home we purchased for him. Good thing that excercise ball at the top is darn quiet because I think he spent a good portion of the night in it...with two indoor cats looking on longingly.

So that's what I've been doing with my weekend, how about all of you? Got anything nifty to share? Let us know. Until then, enjoy your updates.

Friday, March 02, 2007

The weekend lies ahead.

After a very long hard week this is one that I look forward to. Sleeping in is most definitely on my agenda. Perhaps some laundry and basic chores as well, but I think E slug needs to be seen for sure.

I continue to fight this cough and sinus issues that have infiltrated my system while I was down with the flu. They both continue to hound me day in and day out. I am beyond sick of them both. However, I do believe we should all buy stock in Kleenex in times like these.

So I'm finished whining, now back to your updates! Enjoy.
