Another week has gone by....

This one was marked by the event of E's birthday (the 27th). She got some keen gifts and had a nice meal at the Olive Garden. True, we could have gone for a fancier place but when you've got kids in tow it's best to stick with places you know they like. Plus, as far as chain Italian restaurants go, the Olive Garden is reasonably priced and has decent food and excellent service.

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day here in the US (and in participating shops around the world). Head to your local shop or library and partake of some of the freebies. It's a great way to see what's being offered currently for your reading fun.

Almost There

Yippee...Friday tomorrow! This week has gone by in a manner I would like not to repeat. I'm not big on meetings and this week's back-to-back each day has truly sucked. The weekend has a few things planned with my daughter's May Faire event at her school and then Okie's Free Comic Book Day, but other than that I think we're free. So...here's to a quick Friday and some easy weekend events.

Peace Health and Happiness, enjoy those updates!

Singing.

Hah!! If you thought yesterday's song choice was bad - be grateful you couldn't hear me today!! (Well - be grateful you've never, ever heard me sing. I can clear a packed room in point four of a second!!) I was still feeling pretty happy today (I was digging. I like digging, strangely enough) although the weather wasn't quite as good. Often when I'm feeling cheerful I whistle. Somewhat tunelessly, I admit, in fact I've even thought of offering prizes for anyone who can tell what tune it's meant to be.

Today I was cheerful enough not just to whistle but to sing - well - butcher a tune with some words attached. My choice??

Zip a dee doo dah.

See - told you it was worse. *g*

See you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Hello Lampost

What'cha knowin', I've come to watch your flowers growin'...

If you're old enough you'll recognise that as a bit of the Simon & Garfunkel song Feelin' Groovy.

And you know what?? I do. I feel pretty damn' good today. The sun was shining. (We've had a couple of weeks of sunshine actually). The house martins, back from their migration, were wheeling and diving through the glorious blue sky. Their return has always been the first sign of approaching summer to me. I expect the swifts and swallows will be home soon, too. I still miss my boys on days like this but it doesn't hurt as much now.

My stitches came out easily. The wounds have healed nicely, There is a scar but not much of one. Some problems I've had all year have been sorted. And my writer's block went with them!!

I've written three stories and started a fourth just in the past week. Ok - one was a drabble and one a double-drabble and the third was only 1,000 words (as will the fourth be) but at least I wrote.

I haven't broken anything, fallen over anything, dropped anything, or caused any massive trauma to those around me (touch wood) lately.

All-in-all it's a good day. And the rest of the week is looking pretty good as well. I hope you're feeling as lucky as I am. Altogether now... Let the morning time drop all its petals on me. Life, I love you, All is groovy.

Saturday

We're in Olympia, Washington for the weekend to attend their Art Walk celebration. Tonight we'll watch the Procession of the Species, which is supposed to be quite something to see. So far I haven't seen too much that would make me attend this every year. We came thinking the kids would get a kick out of it but there's really not much for the kids. The parade will likely be the most exciting thing they see. Well, that and the hotel pool.

So tomorrow we head home and the kids and I are back to school on Monday. It's been a good Spring break week. I managed to get a few things done and relaxed. That's a successful Spring Break in my book.

Y'all enjoy the updates.

The work week ended a bit early as we have scooted down to Olympia for the Procession of Species. Made it to the hotel...now off to dinner!

Loads to read

Blimey. P & P updated and oh boy was that fun!! I now want to hunt a couple of authors down and beat them with a wet noodle until they beg for mercy and promise never to write more than three stories per month!! (No prizes for guessing which *g*). Oh yeah - and the WMC/Dollhouse stories?? They're all listed as separate stories, they all have separate titles, but they're all linked. All fifty of them. Start at the top and work down.

Another beautiful sunny day here. Nice for Her Maj Queen Lizzie's birthday. She's 84 today. Happy birthday Queenie... Flights resumed so it wasn't as quiet as it has been. Spent the day painting ironworks, gates & fences. Third day this week doing that. I'm now officially sick of the sight of green Hammerite. But that's the last bit done on that contract. Start a new one Monday. Tomorrow & Friday I'm filling in the time between contracts with a bit of site clearance. (That's hacking brambles and digging, in case you were wondering). Nice being outdoors in this weather.

It's late, so I'm for bed. I'll leave you to your reading. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Isn't it quiet

Without aeroplanes??

The weather's been great this past week. Bit chilly of an evening but the days have been sunny and warm, with clear skies. Not a cloud in sight. Not a 'plane in sight either. No contrails, no flashing lights, no engine noise; just glorious, unbroken, blue sky.

Nobody really pays attention to aircraft - except when Concorde still flew - people always stopped and stared at her - so nobody's really consciously aware of the quiet. They should start flying again soon and we're really going to notice it for a day or two. (Our airport isn't terribly big but it is an international and we're on the flight-path most days). It'll all get back to normal quickly with aircraft flying past frequently and we'll stop noticing again. It's been nice for a while - gives you a taste of what life was like before they invented the things.

It's been a bit of a nightmare for the stranded though. Some teachers didn't make it back from their Easter hols so some schools couldn't open this week. So many people have been trying to get home by other means that you can't get a train or ferry reservation for the next three weeks or thereabouts. And you could write your name in the dust that settled on parked cars...

I wouldn't want to be permanently without aeroplanes. I love to travel. I've been all over the world (every continent but Antarctica) and there are still places I want to see or that I want to return to. And there are friends across the ocean that I want to visit and I really can't spare the six weeks or so it would take to get there by ship and train *g*.

But it has been nice for a few days. Peaceful.

Ramble from Joan

Joan is here again, enjoy!
Waste

I took that silly test on Facebook -- What's Your City (or some such) -- and it seems that I would be happiest in San Francisco.

Hmm. I'm European (not proud of it, I just am), and that got me to think.

When someone from, say, New York decides to travel around her country, she is fairly certain that she will understand people (and be understood) wherever she goes. Not in a deeper sense, just language. In Europe, as in European Union, that is far from true. If I set out westward from where I live, I come to the Netherlands, where I would assume everyone had a throat condition if I didn't know better (sorry, neighbours :-) . South of that, I'd pass Belgium, a three-language state, then France, then Spain. And what I'd encounter there first would not be Spanish, but Catalan. Moving eastwards, around Switzerland (another three-language state), I'd move into Italy. For all I know, the inhabitants of North Italy are able to, but with difficulty, converse with those living in the southern parts. Moving a little eastwards, and then north again, I'd come through countries that have no communication problems at all -- they just don't speak to each other after the civil(?) wars they had not too long ago, which resulted in forming some of the states in the first place.

This little tour has not even touched on the United Kingdom or Scandinavia. Obviously, at least from a linguistic point of view, Europe has a wealth of variety, and, looking beyond linguistics, a wealth of potential to enrich everyone living here, too.

Poor America, or, more properly, USA? (No, don't worry, the rhetorical question is only there for dramatic effect ;-)

There's been a tunnel built between England and "The Continent", and it's been reported that, when the two boreholes joined, an English engineer poked his face at the new opening and said, "Eww, a smell of garlic!" That may be true or not, but it is typical of how Europeans deal with the richness that lies at their fingertips.

Poor Europe, without a question mark.

From what I read, someone from Alabama might find it hard to live in San Francisco, and vice versa. For myself, I wonder if that silly test might not actually have produced a valid result, if only for me.

But then, the "happy place" may have more to do with being where the people you love are. I said that the test was silly, didn't I? :-)

Joan

Hey, Joan, thanks for the ramble. Always interesting when you stop by! Off to updates, enjoy!

A Welcome Break

This was the kind of day I love. Get up with no big agenda. Mosey around a bit being a slug in our PJ's. Scoot on out and purchase something fun (I got a new laptop) come home and once again do nothing beyond what we wanted to. A very good Saturday for sure.

Here's hoping you are all having a good weekend as well! Peace, Health, and Happiness.

Back to the update...enjoy!

Ramble from Phair

An update from phair.
The title for this piece should be Free Falling part 3 of an indeterminately numbered series. I wrote 2 previous blogs/blurbs/rambles about walking away from my day job and not being excited about starting a 'new' day job. It was correct of me not to be excited. There was nothing particularly new about the job other than I had not worked in that exact building before. Otherwise, it was just like every other management job in every other Rehabilitation Departement in every other Nursing Home I've ever worked in. I won't get into boring details but I flamed out on day 34 and left the building.

Yep, twice within 60 days, I walked away from a steady and well paying job. It must be some kind of record. If you don't work in healthcare, you'll think I've lost my mind and I should contact my physcian immediately. I did call my physician because I have a sinus infection but mentioned the quitting thing I'm doing lately. She sighed and told me she's hoping to do the same thing in 4 years. Yes, being a healthcare provider is that bad. But, I'll save that soapbox for another time. We are talking about my free fall. Again.

What will I do now? You'd be wise to ask. Frankly, other than going to the beach each morning to write in my journal with a cup of hot chocolate and getting in a few afternoon walks with my dog, I'm not really sure what I'll do now. Scary? Should be but it's not too bad. It was more scary staying in a job I'd grown to hate.

Not the patient care part, that was never the issue. Working with people I can help get well or can educate why they will only be able to do what they are currently able to do regardless of how much they try to do better has been the most rewarding service you can imagine. Even when they don't believe me or are angry with the news I gave them, it's a good feeling to know I've given them the information they need to make their next decision. My information might be positive or negative but giving somebody more control over their own life has been a hugely fulfilling task and I'm grateful for each and every person who allowed me to assist them.

I have a sketchy idea of what I'm going to dabble into over the coming weeks. Wanna hear about it? Knew you would!

1. I've got a manuscript at a publisher's at the moment (day 74 since submission but who's counting). I don't know if they'll take it and I'm whittling my finger nails down waiting to hear their answer but it is exciting.

2. I'm launching a monthly story service for a FEE.  It's the Dirty Story of the Month Club.  I will write one short story of dramatic and sexual content greater than 1500 words and email it to folks subscribing to the service each month. The cost is $5 membership dues and $1 month. Total cost for the service for 2010 will be $13. The first story will be ready mid May. There will be a pay pal button at my website to subscribe to the Dirty Story of the Month Club (Ds of M Club).

3. I'm a quarter of the way through another manuscript which will not appear at the website. It is a mainstream story similar to my first publish novel, The Aethereal Sea.

4. Of course, my website (phair.com)will be updated with poems, stories, and photographs as often as I can and as the IT demigod permits.

I wish each of you a wonderful, fun, and exciting spring and summer.  Remember to embrace each day. Have hope in tomorrow, find joy in today, and screw yesterday 'cause who wants to remember it anyway!

phair

Phair, thanks for the update! Best of luck in where ever you end up. And for the rest of you, mosey on over to phair's web site and give her some feedback! I know where $13 of my dollars are going this year and, with that in mind, her Paypal button will not be live until Monday.

Now enjoy your updates! Peace, Health and Happiness to y'all.

Nowt

Yet another night when I can't think of a blessed thing to say...

Weather turned nippy again.

Football - breaks your bloody heart it does.

Stitches come out tomorrow evening. Yeay!! They've reached that feeling-tight-and-want-them-gone stage.

That's it. Stumped.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Hopeless

That's me. Well - accident prone, anyway. Or a walking disaster just looking for a place to happen. (This one's not funny folks just painful.)

At work last Thursday we started setting some bamboo canes (used for marking). They supposed to be new for every new job. Sometimes cheapskate companies (or site supervisors on the fiddle) try and get away with using old ones. Usually you can spot these (they're grubby) but not always. I got an old one on Thursday. In fact I got one that was rotten right through (but didn't look it). As I leaned forward to push it into the ground it shattered. Off balance I fell forward. Right onto the end of the cane, which shattered some more. I was just damn' glad I had safety glasses on.

Bamboo is bloody sharp. It sliced a nice deep (and at an angle) gouge across my chin right up to my lip. And a shorter one (about half the size) parallel to it. It also slashed my cheek and left several large pieces embedded in it. I whipped those out immediately. Unfortunately I couldn't get all the tiny bits out of the main wound. It was bleeding too much. Boy was it bleeding!!

I went into the portakabin and I looked in the mirror and said, "Damn!! That's going to need stitches." I got as much dirt out of it as I could and said to the foreman, "I think I need to sign-out for the day. If I'm quick I can catch the next bus to town."

He said several rude words and informed me in no uncertain terms that I wasn't getting the bus, was I stupid or something, he would drive me. I was glad of that. Ten minutes in the car, thirty-five on the bus to the hospital, and as I'd already soaked through three paper towels... well... you can see the headlines Painter bleeds to death on the number H2 bus. Not good.

So I wound up in A&E again. I was lucky. There were only three other people in the department and none were as injured as I was so the triage nurse scheduled me to be seen first. A nice young man (he looked way too young to be a qualified doctor!!) called me into the cubicle and informed me he was the registrar. He looked at my chin and confirmed my guess - it needed stitches. The cheek wound was small and just needed cleaning but the parallel slices needed work. A quick jab with a needle full of something cold which stung and then he washed the wounds. Once he was sure it was clean he stitched it. Seven stitches in the main wound, two in the shorter one. Then he gave me some cream which he said would help prevent serious scarring. It will scar, there's no hope of it not, but there's a chance I can minimise it. "Keep it clean and dry" he said. How?? I thought.

Friday I couldn't go to work.

I also found that I couldn't eat. Hell, I couldn't even clean my teeth!! The swelling was so bad. By Saturday evening I could (carefully) clean my teeth (thank God!!) but I still couldn't chew. I love tomato soup, really I do, but by Sunday night I was sick of the sight of it.

The swelling has all gone now and this evening I got to eat a real dinner. With potatoes and carrots and spinach and I've never enjoyed a meal more!! (Ok - hyperbole there, I admit, but it was good.)

I get the stitches out on Thursday. I can't wait.

Another Week, Another Monday

Monday once again but with a difference. This will be the last full week for me and the kids before Spring break. Yippee! E is very jealous.

I think I've finally kicked the spring forward butt drags. It's very sad that it takes me a good two weeks to get my body clock adjusted to the time change. Here's to not feeling completely pooped after work every day.
You have a lot to read tonight. Have at it!

An End of a Weekend

Somehow the weekend has already gone by and work awaits us in the morning. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday and it went by way too fast.

One more open house has been completed. I'm ready to be a slug with both me and the house again. I really look forward to having some finale to this for sale concept. Having boxed a bunch of stuff up is bad for me and if I were Tamara it would be worse. At least I have 80% of my stuff here and un-boxed, where as she has 90% or more boxed up...that would really really suck.

Well, on that note, I leave you to your update. Peace, Health and Happiness.

Busy Day

The day has flown. I picked up my two weeks worth of comics. I spent a good chunk of time updating my checkbook. Went to lunch with the family.

I also spent some time tidying. Tomorrow we have an Open House so I still have a few areas that need attention. The big one would be the area next to my bed that's been taken over by comic book piles. I bought a bunch of issues at the Emerald City Comicon and I still haven't been able to play with them (meaning put them in my database and read them). I was hoping to get to that today but it looks like I'll just have to hide them away for the Open House tomorrow and perhaps have fun with them during Spring break week.

Hopefully your weekend is going well. Enjoy the updates!

TGIF

A short week that felt really long. Hence, I'm very glad it's the weekend. Sadly we have an open house Sunday which means we'll be doing lots of chores tomorrow and then out we go on Sunday. Here's to hoping somebody makes an offer.

Peace, Health and Happiness. Enjoy your updates.

Cough, Cough.

No longer sneezing. But this cough is a real PITA. I couldn't paint a straight line today if my life depended on it; every time I moved, I coughed. Today has consisted of - cough, cough, whinge, whinge, cough, cough, whinge, whinge. Repeat ad infinitum. I am fed up with it. I hate getting sick, I don't mind injured (I'm used to that *g*) but I hate being sick. I also hate taking any kind of medication. Which is why I've had no paracetamol today and the minimum amount of cough syrup. Maybe I should have some.

Sorry folks, can't be amusing or entertaining tonight. I'll make it up to you as soon as this cold goes. I'm sure I can find something in my chequered past that will give you a laugh. Even if it's only my sole (disastrous) attempt to play hockey, (I was 12 and at school). Or the time I got stuck half-way down the zip wire ride. (I still can't work out how - what happened to gravity??)

Until next week - stay healthy. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.
