Not Everything of Value Has a Price

Not as much as usual tonight - but there's still plenty for you to read.

After last week's Barbara snippet I got an email asking if I get paid extra for the time I spend with her. Just in case anybody else was wondering the same, I thought I'd clear up any misconceptions.

I'm a self-employed sub-contractor working in the construction industry. Sometimes I work on private jobs, mostly I work on larger projects. I only get paid when I work. I don't get sick pay, I don't get holiday pay, I don't get paid for bank holidays.

I'm allowed to have her on site, and learning about various trades, as a favour from the company I sub-contract to. They let me do this because they're part of a construction industry scheme intended to boost the numbers of women in construction trades by encouraging girls (individually and as classes or groups from schools) to visit sites and see how things work. The industry doesn't fund these visits. Mainly they're funded by the schools, or from the local authority education budget.

There is no funding for individual visits. The industry relies on volunteers for those activities.

The time I spend "working" with Barbara is not considered to be work. So I don't get paid for those days. At all.

But it's worth it.

Back to Work

Under 300 emails in my inbox, not too bad. Back to the ordinary. Not a lot to read tonight, but Ze will be around tomorrow meaning you will get a bunch I am sure.

Enjoy your updates.

Home!

We're back from Spring Reign 2014 and I'm very glad to be home.

Max went with us and enjoyed walking and sniffing and peeing. For an older dog he walked a lot. We managed to check out a large portion of the fields and a nice section of the river nearby.

He also enjoyed his time napping in the back of the car. He did a lot of that today because it was wet and cold. In fact, my feet are still trying to get warm after being wet all weekend. Next year I'll wear waterproof shoes.

Little e's team did great. They won 5 out of 6 games, which is darn good. I know a lot of kids who will sleep like logs tonight.

Back to work tomorrow for us. Farewell, spring break!

Tamara

p.s. Today is E's birthday. Wish her a good one if you would. She's not real happy about hitting the big 50.

Saturday Spring Reign

At the hotel and tired from a day outside watching all the Ultimate games. Hundreds of kids playing 3 games each. If that had been me playing those games I would have been a lot more tired. At least it was rain free today, one can only hope for that luck tomorrow as well. It makes this event a lot more pleasant. Hope the weekend is going well where you are.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Cry - God for Shakey, England and St. George!

As I mentioned yesterday, today was St George's Day. Even though we know absolutely nothing about the original saint, apart from the fact he was a Christian martyred in Palestine, the legends are many and varied.

And apparently the old boy got around a bit, too. Not only is he patron saint of England, but he's also patron saint of Portugal, Germany, (really?? I never knew that), Aragon, Catalonia, Genoa, and Venice. If any of our readers from those places felt like celebrating the day - hope you had a good one.

Today was also Shakespeare's Birthday. The 450th anniversary of his birth. England's most famous playwright. And no - don't believe any of that rubbish about it really being the Earl of Oxford. Class prejudice - pure and simple. Shakespeare wrote the plays. No question.

This Friday is ANZAC Day. To our New Zealand and Australian readers - thank you. To all who mark the day. A peaceful day to you. Lest We Forget.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Behold, I Stand at the Door

Tomorrow is St. Georges Day. The English, generally, don't make much of a fuss about it. But just in case some of our English readers do think it should be celebrated - Happy St. George's Day to you.

Barbara came to work last Thursday as arranged. It took a little more organising this time. She's grown a bit since we first kitted her out, so she needed new overalls. And a new hard-hat. This time she got a proper one (the smallest fitting I could find) rather than the toy one she had originally. The hardest thing was boots.

Even though we would be preparing, bracing, wedging, and supporting the doors, and all she'd be doing was the fixings, the manager insisted she'd need safety footwear. Just in case a door slipped. (They weren't that heavy and they wouldn't injure an adult, but a child's feet break quite easily.) Do you have any idea how hard it is to find safety boots or shoes in that small a size??

It took me three days. Eventually I found some safety trainers (US - sneakers) that were only one size too large. (A definite sign that there are more women in construction trades these days.) With two pairs of socks they weren't too bad. They were fairly light, too, so she wasn't clomping around like a deep-sea diver.

She wasn't going to be cutting any hinge rebates - kids & sharp chisels are not a good combination. Hell, me & sharp chisels is a fairly dodgy prospect!! Nor cutting any latch or handle sockets. We'd prepared all that in advance.

I took my own electric screwdriver in for her. It's smaller and lighter than the ones we use on site. I also took a camera in. Her mother had given it to me and asked me to take some photos for her. I took pics of her standing in her kit, balancing on the small stepladder, and fixing a hinge to a door. She fitted the hinges onto the doors, in the rebates the chippy (carpenter) had cut. Then the chippy and I positioned the door, braced and wedged it. Barbara stood on the steps and fixed the hinges to the frame. Then she fixed the latch and handles to the door, and the latch-plate to the frame.

She sat with me and the chippy to eat our packed lunches. And talked nineteen-to-the-dozen as usual.

In total she did twelve doors - which was a pretty good number. And at the end of the day she got her door-hangers mate certificate, and a little frame with a brass door-hinge in it, from the chippy. And I took a photo of her being presented with them. She was well chuffed. So was her mother, who was there to pick her up, and witnessed the little presentation.

She loved ever minute of it. That kid is going to work in the construction industry in one way or another when she grows up, I'm certain of that.

The peace between the pets continues....

Today was a big day for Max. He visited the vet for the first time in a long while. He's now up-to-date on his vaccinations and his nails are nice and short. For his age he's in great health. He does have a small lump that may need to be removed. A needle aspiration biopsy was done and we'll find out tomorrow if it's anything to worry about.

Max is also in need of a thorough teeth cleaning and he has a dark mole on his forehead that should be removed. Unfortunately at approximately $550 that is going to have to wait a little bit. Right now we'll try and get the teeth a little cleaner by having him munch on some of those dental health chewies.

Pet Daily Update

We are doing better than expected in our house. Beanie (cat) did not just freak and hide. He is in his secured areas but when there has been a break with Max visiting he held his own and hissed and swiped at him. This is much better than hiding. It makes us think someday they will deal with each other well enough to be in the same room even. Gonna be a while but we are willing to wait them out.

T and the boys went off to see a movie. I stayed home and did some chores and babysat the pets. A very nice easy day with sunshine to boot.

Here is hoping your weekend went well and that you have a great week. I am sure my staycation will be splendid.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Max is back!

So Max (my former dog) is now at our house. Mike and the boys are moving into an apartment in Seattle. He wanted to avoid the extra rent expense of a dog and asked if I thought we could take him. Since Joey passed on a while back we thought it was do-able. Beanie isn't a big dog fan by any means but we're hopeful they'll adjust.

Actually Max has been living with cats for the last two years. He doesn't go after them in an attack manner...he just wants a good sniff. Beanie isn't up for that right now of course. His experience with dogs at his former home (E's ex) wasn't a good one.

Right now we've got pet gates (with kitty pass through doors) on our bedroom and the computer room. Even though Max is getting on in dog years (11 or so) he was still able to launch right over that damn gate. We raised the gate a bit off the floor and that allowed him to waltz through the kitty pass through. *sigh* Moved the gate back down and now we're waiting to see if he can still get through the kitty door. I say 'no' because he would have to crouch and scoot. E thinks 'yes'. We'll see.

Anyway...this was exactly why Spring break week was perfect for this getting to know you period. Someone will be home to supervise and get both pets adjusted to the new reality.

I'm damn excited to have him back. I know little e is also looking forward to having Max at our house. Now if we can just get Beanie to tolerate his presence and realize Max isn't going to eat him.

Staycation

Not having to go to work makes me smile. Vacation at home is fine. Get some chores done and take it easy is all I need. Life has been a bit more stressful than I like, so I will hopefully take some time off to relax and get a bit more energy in my system. Tamara is on spring break as well so we will get some time just for us and that also is always a good thing.

So here is hoping you all enjoy your weekend.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Almost There

Cal missed a good chunk of the week. He ended up not having strep throat. Instead he came down with hand, foot and mouth disease. Yeah, I'd never heard of it either. Gave him a helluva sore throat and a high fever for a couple of days of high fever. The worst of that happened over the weekend. We went to the doc on Monday and got the diagnosis. By then he'd broken out in the blisters. The stay at home was due to those blisters...when they break the fluids contain the virus.

Today he went back to school. He's going to look great in his class picture with all of the scabbed over places on his face but at least he's in the pic. He'll have two days of school this week and then be off for a week of Spring Break. I know I'm ready for that week off.

Electrifying Web-slingers.

This coming weekend is Easter. And this year is one of those where the Western Christian denominations, the various Eastern Orthodox churches, and the Coptic Christian churches all celebrate on the same day. So, to all our Christian readers a blessed Holy Week and a good Easter to you.

And to all those who celebrate a non-religious Easter (which doesn't sound quite right, but you know what I mean), Happy Easter.

Went to see the new Spider-Man film tonight. It was better than I expected. The character of Electro (though not following comics canon for his back-story - but let's face it, there are so many versions of the Marvel comic-verse that even the comics don't follow comics canon!!), was pretty well done, I had been a little concerned that they'd make a complete travesty of him, the way the DC movie Batman and Robin made such a total mess of Mr. Freeze. But they didn't.

Saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier last week. That was well done, too. I can recommend them, if comic book heroes are your thing then you should enjoy both these.

See you next week. Good night and may your God/s go with you.

Just Hanging Around.

*pokes head round corner*. Yep, it's me, just around the corner. No idea why I'm round the corner, mind you. But I am. E said so. So I must be.

But first. It's Hanuman Jayanti, we wish all or Hindu readers a good feast. It's also Pesach , we wish all our Jewish readers a happy Passover.

It's been a glorious few days here. Lovely and sunny and warm. Really felt like spring, maybe even summer. Though the temperature has dropped sharply at night. It really cheers you up when it's sunny. And I think I saw my first swallow of the year today. The house martins and swifts can't be far behind.

Of course, when I said I was going to try to sort something out for Barbara I clean forgot that Good Friday and Easter Monday would mess things up. It reduces the available time for Barbara to visit. They're both bank holidays (public holidays) in England & Wales (but not Scotland, I'm not sure about Northern Ireland, they weren't at one time but I think they are now). So no work. (Except - I'm working overtime so I will work Friday - but not Monday).

I have managed to arrange something though. I've got permission for her to come over on Maundy Thursday to learn the art of hanging doors. The internal doors we're using are very light (in other words, they're fairly insubstantial) and relatively easy to hang. The recesses for the hinges will have been chiselled out in advance, and the hinges attached to the doors. It's just a question of Barbara watching as we position the doors and support them with wedges, and then she gets to use a cordless (battery powered) screwdriver to fix the hinges while we hold the doors steady. She'll then get a certificate as apprentice door-hanger.

Her mother has promised to bring hot-cross-buns for her, me, and the carpenter.

I think we're all equally looking forward to it.

Monday Evening

Good News, I am sure Ze will have a bucket load for you all.

Another work week has begun. T had the day off for some doc visits for herself and Cal. He sadly has foot, hand and mouth disease. Nothing but time for healing. Another day off of school. I am betting he would actually prefer school. That sore throat has got to be painful. I am hoping for his sake he gets healthy quickly.

Not much to read tonight, but Ze is just around the corner.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Strep throat anyone?

We've had an easy, relaxing Sunday. Cal is still sick and it's looking like he may have strep throat. I'll take him to the doc tomorrow after my eye appointment and let the music teacher know if that's the case.

Along with hoping none of the kids in the play get a case of strep, E and I are keeping our fingers crossed none of us at the house get hit. It's been a long time since I've had strep but I do remember how crappy you feel and how sore your throat becomes.

Light night for updates. Have a site you read that we don't check, send it to us.

Easy Saturday

The kiddo's Ultimate Frisbee game is later today, so your update is a little early. We had a nice Saturday with lots of sun and slugness on our part. Unfortunately Cal is sick with fever and all. We have drugged him well and he is snuggled up on the couch with his computer taking it slow. He did a really great job last night on his final showing of Aladdin Jr even though he felt like crap. So today is a nice slow one. Tamara did some cleaning of gutters on the roof, I did laundry and some shifting in the shed but overall we have taken it nice and slow. We will be packing it up and off to watch the Ultimate game this evening and then going out for dinner with some of the kids. Cal will stay home and rest up.

Here is hoping your weekend is going well.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

The show must go on....

The Ridgecrest Elementary production of Aladdin, Jr. opened last night. Cal was spectacular as the villainous Jafar. In fact, all of the kids were great. The lighting effects didn't cooperate and some of the mics were iffy but they managed to pull off an entertaining show just the same.

Send good vibes Cal's way because he came home from school today around 2pm. He's been pumped full of meds and insists he feels much better. I know the music teacher panicked a bit when she found out Cal was sick. I think the only way Cal would have missed tonight is if he were puking up his toenails.

Okay. Enough blabbing. Get to the update and E, little e and I will head to Aladdin, Jr.

This Blessed Plot.

A beautiful day. Just as sunny as yesterday but without the bitterly cold wind.

At lunch-break I decided I didn't want to sit in the portakabin with the lads, watching the electricians playing cards, knowing it'll end in a lot of bad words. Nor did I want to listen to the smug Chelsea fan crowing about the fact that they overturned a 2-goal deficit to beat PSG and go through to the European semi-final. And we didn't, having been knocked out of the tournament in the previous round, by the best team in Europe.

So I took my paste sarnies off to the edge of the site. Far enough away from the noise that it was barely there. Where I could look out over some fields, and a stand of trees.

And a lone cottage, which must have stood for a couple of centuries by itself in the quiet countryside, and is now practically part of the town. Its garden home to a majestic magnolia tree, probably nearly as old as the cottage, currently a stunning display of blossom.

I watched two goldfinches engage in a spectacular aerial dance. (European goldfinches are totally different to the north American bird of the same name). And I was surrounded by heliotrope and forget-me-nots and willow-herb and daisies and the songs of a dozen different birds.

And for a short while I was at peace. And I went back to work thinking how great it was to be alive in springtime.

I wish for that peace for all of you. See you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

While the Chaffinch Sings on the Orchard Bough

Today was Ramanavami - hope all our Hindu readers had a good festival.

Schools broke up on Friday, for the Easter holiday. Caught me by surprise, I hadn't realised they were so close. It was only when the buses were almost empty, and so were the roads, on the way to and from work yesterday, that I realised. So I hadn't arranged anything for Barbara. So today in my lunch-break I was rushing round like a blue-arsed fly trying to organise something. With luck I'll have something for her next week.

If the weather co-operates, that is. It's been typical April-in-England weather down here - one day sunny and warm, the next heavy showers, the sunny but a bitter wind, then torrential rain all day. It's a right royal pain trying to decide what to wear. Thick jersey?? Thin?? Long sleeves?? Short?? Waterproofs?? Damn it - take the lot in the rucksack!!

Other than the weather, April is a wonderful month. Birds singing at the top of their little lungs. Looking for - and finding - a mate. Filling the air with glorious music. The summer migrants are starting to re-appear. I've seen jays, woodpeckers - my first ravens in the wild (seen the ones at the Tower of London of course, but they don't count). Robins in pairs - the only time of year you can see two robins together without them trying to kill each other. Long-tailed tits, wrens, warblers, egrets. Fantastic variety.

Though I can never spot the egrets without immediately thinking, "egrets, I've seen a few, but then again, too few to mention".

And there's your earworm for the evening!! *g*

Hype!

Time for a Cocktail Hour contest....
Hey everyone!

As some of you may have already heard from our Best of 2013 podcast, it’s time for the 2014 Cocktail Hour Bearded Clam Challenge. This will be our third BCC and we’re looking forward to it being the best yet. The rules are simple: Write an original story between 10k – 30k words that contains the phrases “Cocktail Hour” and “Bearded Clam” in any context, have it edited, and submit it no later than July 15, 2014. Pretty straightforward, right?

All entries are rated by a team of judges and will then be compiled into an ebook and made available for download on our website. Authors retain all rights to their stories, of course. Big congratulations to Susan X. Meagher for taking first place last year!

We work very hard to make sure the BCC is as fair as possible. All identifying information is removed from the entries and sent, along with a standard judging form, to the team. The judges are never identified and no one – including the other judges – beside me and Andy know the identity of the team. Once judging is completed, I average the scores and the rankings will be announced on a special Cocktail Hour show – and there will be prizes!

Submissions – and any questions – should be sent to rev@cocktailhour.us.

Please, help us reach as many authors as possible by sharing this information. And encourage your favorite authors to join in on the fun!

I’ll be cross-posting so I apologize if you’re seeing this multiple times. This competition is very important to me and I want to get the word out to as many authors as possible.

Thanks,

Rev

You heard Rev. Spread the word. Now on to the updates.

Relax

Was it only last weekend I was at Emerald City Comicon? This weekend is vastly different. Slow, a few chores, an Ultimate Frisbee game in the drizzly rain. I've got the comics I picked up at the con pulled out so I can enter them into the database.

Tomorrow we'll head to the grocery store. Slow and easy is the plan for this weekend.

Wiped out. Long week at work. Good news is only one game tomorrow. Let's hope it is not raining during that one hour period. What are the odds? Not good I am sure.

For Dust Thou Art, and Unto Dust Shall Thou Return

Bit short of updates tonight.

Bit short of things to say too.

Unless I grumble about the weather again. (More rain with the wonderful addition of heavily polluted air thanks to a Saharan sandstorm that was caught by vicious winds and is dumping loads of dust, grit, and sand across Europe. No fun for asthmatics, and other lung-condition sufferers).

Got any archive sites we should be checking?? Let us know. Please.

Got a ramble for us?? A humorous story?? Anything?? Send it to us. Please.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Stumbling into Spring

Thanks E. No worries, mate. Yep - we had a great day.

The weather was gorgeous. There was loads of sport on TV. Got the allotment dug over. And we went out for dinner.

On Saturday we went out with the kid's sister, she couldn't do Sunday because it was also Mothering Sunday (which is also Mother's Day in the UK) and she was expected at her mother-in-law's place.

Me, the kid (for new readers - she's my cousin, we share a house - and a birthday - but she's ten years younger than me), my sister, and my nephew, all went out for dinner on Sunday. We went to the tapas place. There was flamenco. And, by some miracle, nothing went wrong. I didn't break anything, fall over anything, spill anything, drop anything, nor cause anyone else to do any of those things. It was a lovely meal.

I got a fair few cds, a couple of dvds, and some books (you can never go wrong giving me books). The kid got similar things.

The clocks went forward on Sunday as well (we do like to save things up and do them all on the same day here). My body-clock hasn't quite adjusted yet. It'll probably take a week or so. When you've been getting up at the same time six days a week for six months, (and waking at that time on the seventh, because body-clocks don't understand Sunday lie-ins), it takes a few days to re-set itself. I don't so much spring forward as shuffle reluctantly into daylight.

You can tell it really is spring now. The daffs are in full bloom. The forsythia is starting to show. The bluebells are on their way, and there's celandine everywhere. Pretty.

Oh yeah, and the lambs are out in the fields and bouncing around. *g*
