Myself Was Formed - a Carpenter

It's Corpus Christi tomorrow. Wishing you a good day.

It's half-term this week. So naturally I popped over to see little Barbara this evening. I wanted to let her know that although she can't come to work this week (the site isn't safe enough and there's nothing she would be able to do), I've got all the permissions sorted out so that she can come out to play in the summer break.

One of the carpenters (a woman) has agreed to let Barbara work with her as long as I'm there too. She reckons that by then she should be ready to fit the skirting boards in several of the houses. Barbara will be able to learn how to use a mitre gauge, and (if her mother says it's ok) a mitre block and tenon saw. She'll help cut the corners for the skirting and learn how to fix it.

Barbara can't wait. *g* She was chattering nineteen-to-the-dozen about it for the whole time I was there.

I'm designing the certificate for her trainee carpenter's mate award already.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Bank Holiday Monday

Monday was a bank holiday (English for "public holiday"). The government calls it, somewhat prosaically, "Late spring bank holiday" these days. Though most of us old enough to remember life before colour TV still call it "Whitsun bank holiday", as it used to be. Even though Sunday was Trinity, not Whitsun (which was the previous Sunday).

We don't mark Memorial Day over here, of course, since its origins are with the dead of the USA/CSA civil war. We remember our war dead on Armistice Day in November. We've had our own civil wars - half-a-dozen or more - though the one most people mean when they say "The Civil War" is the Royalist versus Parliamentarian series which began in 1642 and wound up with the execution of the king - Charles I - in 1649. And was waged by the man whose name was never to be spoken in our house when I was a child. (Irish mother - she would say "that man" in a tone that left no doubt about the level of her contempt.)

Anyway. Bank holiday. No work. No football on TV (season's over). No rugby Union (ditto). Wasn't particularly interested in the tennis matches available on Eurosport. Bored. So... what to do.

We decided to go and visit a local attraction. Crealy was crowded with kids (it's also half-term this week)so we decided to give it a miss. We wound up going to Cornwall instead. We didn't have a particular place in mind but as we drove along we saw a sign for the Screech Owl Sanctuary. I'd never heard of it before. Anybody who's been reading my ramblings for a bit knows that I can be a bit of a softie when it comes to animals so of course we stopped.

I'm so glad we did. It was fantastic.

They have a fair few owls there - as you can see from the website. And they do what they call "Close Encounters". It's exactly what it says. A handler holds an owl (several owls in succession actually). And you get to see them - close up. And since there were no other visitors when we arrived we got their undivided attention for a while. We were allowed to stroke the owls that were brought to us (as these are the ones that are used to people). Their feathers were amazingly soft.

There was a young Eagle Owl, Lightning - losing his/her (they don't know which yet) down and gaining his/her adult plumage. Every stroke sent bits of fluff flying off into the wind. S/He's still trying to work out what his/her wings are for. It won't be long before s/he flies, but right now all s/he does is face-plant. Quick flap of the wings, leap forward, and splat. Then s/he picks him/herself up, looks around, and starts preening as if to say, "I meant to do that". S/He was adorable.

By the time we'd stroked and photographed all the owls currently on duty there were six more visitors. So the staff decided it was time for the flying display. Three owls showed off their skills. And then the chap asked if anybody would like to have a go. He'd barely finished speaking before I was up off the bench and heading into the arena, holding out my arm for the gauntlet!!

I got to "fly" two different owls. They were so light. And so agile. And so beautiful. I stood there with the owl on my arm and grinned.

I'm still grinning.

It was magic.

Rainy Monday

We still went to a park with the two younger kids and met up with my daughters classmates for a afternoon potluck in the rain. A little cold and glad to be home. Small update tonight. Enjoy and I will be back to ramble at you at the end of the week.

Be well. Peace, Health and Happiness.

OK in OK

I've been watching the news reports from Oklahoma.

A tragedy about those kids. What a bloody awful thing to happen. Life gone almost before it's begun. My heart goes out to the parents.

And all those people who've lost everything. House, possessions, car, everything. I'm amazed that they seem so calm, so accepting. Everything's gone but oh well - we'll rebuild. Talk about resilient. I can't begin to imagine how I'd feel in that situation.

I've never been so glad to live in England. The chances of us being hit by a tornado like that - or a massive hurricane - or a California-style earthquake - are slim-to-none. I've got more chance of winning the lottery (14 million to 1).

Hug your loved ones folks. You never know whether you'll get the chance again.

See you next week. Stay safe. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Instant Human

Just add coffee.

No work for me today (damn, that means no money) so I decided to use my residents pass (people living in Devon or Cornwall can get a two-year pass for less than the cost of a single visit ticket) and visit the Eden Project, as I haven't been there for a while.

It's come on in leaps and bounds. Masses to see. Lots of veggie & vegan dishes in the restaurant. Loads of good stuff (books, seeds, plants) in the gift shop.

Went into the Rainforest biome (biome is their rather annoying portmanteau of bio dome). They had a mini plantation of a plant which - well I won't say I can't live without it, because I probably could if I had to. Though the first couple of days would not be pleasant. But I can definitely say that everybody in my vicinity would be grateful if I didn't have to live without it - because I am evil - no - I am beyond evil without it.

Coffee.

You do not want to meet me before I've had my coffee. Trust me on this.

They had all sorts of wicked stuff in there. Banana plants with bananas on them. Cocoa. And a rubber plant bigger than our house. Fantastic stuff. Well worth the visit.

Monday Night

I'm stunned tonight at the devastation wrought by a tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. I was living in Oklahoma City when the infamous May 3 F5 tornado swept through Moore. This one looks even worse. My healing thoughts go out to the people of Moore.

End of Weekend

Tonight we gave fondue a try again at our house. I forgot how much work putting it all together is, plus the kids learned little strips of steak and chicken take far too long to cook in between pieces. The cheese sauce was lumpy...I obviously suck at this. I even followed the recipe. The oil was a bigger hit as potatoes and meat cooked a bit easier. However, I think Tamara and the boys liked the chocolate one best. As chocolate is not something I should be eating or something my daughter even enjoys we ate more potatoes. Over all a bust for us. Even the clean up sucked. We have officially done that and won't be repeating it anytime soon.

Well time for me to go piss off my kitty and stuff a lot of drugs down her in hopes she can come back from wherever she is.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Iron Man 3

I saw Iron Man 3 today and it was a lot of fun. Many explosions, of course, but it also had a lot of out-of-the-suit time for Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.).

E took Joey to the vet again who gave us a few more things to try. Send your good thoughts Joey's way.

Hope your Saturday was restful and/or productive. Enjoy the updates!

Friday Evening

Another visit to the vet. My orange girl kitty is sick. Very sick. I have come to know the vet's office well. They have come to know my Discover card as well. Bone marrow is important and my cat is realizing that. Her non appetite is also not helpful. This has been going on for a while. We had some progress with steroids and unfortunately this visit we lost ground. Keep trying.

Y'all enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness for all.

Weekend

Getting hurt while at work requires an irritating amount of paperwork. Then there's the irritation when you find out the packet you were given at work and filled out diligently is obsolete. Now everything is done online. Grrrr. Now to fill out the new online forms, contact the doctor's office and give them the new case number. It's a darn good thing it's looking like my injury won't require surgery or physical therapy (knock wood).

The weekend is ahead and I'm looking forward to finally seeing Iron Man 3. E and little e have no desire to see this one so it'll just be me and the boys.

Whatever your weekend holds, stay safe and have fun.

Radio Hype

It did snow last night. Dartmoor got quite a bit. It's ridiculous. I want spring back!!

We have tickets for the new Star Trek movie - finally!! Tomorrow evening - in 3D. Can't wait!!

Message from Allaine about tomorrow's F4F radio show.

Xena and the End. And the Beginning.

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2013/05/17/xena-and-the-end-and-the-beginning

As F4F Radio winds to a close next month, we take time in May to wrap up an ongoing program tradition where we discuss "Xena: Warrior Princess" every six months. This tradition started with an interview of three prominent Xena fanfic and "uberfic" authors in January 2010, followed by three more in June. Due to the fandom's enduring and massive popularity, this eventually metamorphosed into annual May and November segments where author interviews gave way to panel discussions with authors and fans about Xena, the heroines, the villains, the storylines, the comedy, the everything! Tonight we’ll have one last panel where the conversation will fittingly include Xena’s final episodes, as well as the way the series continues to influence fans to this day. Once again I’ll cede my place as host to author/film-maker Kim Pritekel, a treasured and reliable contributor to this program whose role has evolved from being a guest on that June show, to recurring co-host, to regular moderator of the Xena panels. Also returning from past panels will be hardcore fans Adm_Hawthorne, Kelly Neal, Zea Apa, and Chris Salameno. Join us as we take one final look at how Xena changed lives, before F4F Radio draws its own conclusion in June.

Allaine
www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine

In the words of my (highly ungrammatical) local dialect - tune in and give it a listen. I won't because I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the two-part finale known as A Friend in Need - if I should be daft enough to even think about it (let alone re-watch it) I swear a lot. And froth at the mouth. And shout at the TV. And fight the urge to stick pins in a photo of Rob Tapert.

If you're not quite as... upset... as I still am, then give it a whirl.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

A Torrent of Darkness

Among the gusty trees

OK. Who stole spring and left November in its place??

Last week there was blazing sunshine, lovely warm - hot even - days. Blue skies. I was in a short-sleeved shirt.

Today??

Today I was wearing a t-shirt, a long-sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt and a waterproof jacket. And I was still cold. It's cold, grey, we have gales and torrential rain. The Met Office said we would be getting a month's rain in 48 hours, and there might even be some "wet snow". (Wet snow?? Is there any other kind?? It's frozen water for pete's sake!!)

Snow?? It's Devon. It's mid-May. There should not be snow. There should not be gales. There should not be temperatures below five degrees. This is just not good enough. Somebody up there is having a laugh. (This sentence is pronounced 'aving a larf in case you were wondering).

There was so much rain today I gave up trying to work and came home early.

I am not a happy bunny!!

Monday Evening

We had some wild rain and wind today, but the evening has brought back the sunshine. I do enjoy these long daylight hours.

Work went by relatively fast which is a bonus for the beginning of the week. Here is hoping you all find something splendid. Remember tomorrow brings a whole new day.

Enjoy those updates.

Sunday! Wow...looks a lot like Monday.

I'm home sick today and it's a good thing. I woke up, saw Ze's email on my phone and was hit with the fact that we spaced on posting this puppy.

Enjoy! You'll get another update later tonight. Hopefully we won't forget to post it....

Mother's Day

The kids are at their other houses so Mother's Day weekend has been quiet for us. I managed to get my money done. E did a buttload of yardwork. We watched two Ultimate frisbee games (sadly they lost). Tomorrow I think our biggest plans involve a trip to the grocery store. All in all a pretty darn good Mother's Day weekend.

Waiting To Boldly Go

A big thank you to Angharad Governal for the link to a new festivals calendar.

So now I can say that Ascension Day is coming up in the Western Christian traditions - a good day to those of our readers who mark this feast.

Went to see Iron Man 3. It's ok. Lots of explosions, noise, humour. A little too much humour actually. Too much Robert not enough Tony. I seem to remember the first one being slightly less noisy and having slightly more plot. Or slightly more believable plot anyway. Entertaining enough way to waste a couple of hours. And a lot better than number 2 was.

The film we're really waiting for opens tomorrow. The trailers look brilliant. Although I still object to the alternate timeline. And what seems to be the slow erosion of the creator's vision of a classless, unified, society where money doesn't exist. And greed/lust for power is seen as an aberration, a failing, and not an admirable quality.

I'm talking about Star Trek of course. The new movie Into Darkness has a special preview at five past midnight, and then opens nationwide tomorrow, here in the UK.

If we're really lucky we might get to see it next week.

Enjoy your updates, Goodnight and may your God/s go with you/

The Kindest Thing is Always the Hardest.

Well... now I'm right stuffed. The online calendar I used to use to check religious festivals around the world has gone. I don't think there are any for the next day or so, but if there are then please forgive me for missing them while I search for a new one.

Unfortunately my cousin's cat had to be put to sleep on Friday. She had a seizure at breakfast and couldn't stand up or breathe easily. We rushed her straight down to the vet and the vet saw us straight away. And two quick injections later she went peacefully to sleep and beyond. Neither of us went to work that day.

Thank you to everybody who sent good wishes.

Rest Day

Last week seemed very long and yesterday was packed with things to do, hence today is the day of rest. So far we have done fairly well on that front. Got the hammock set up and the kids are currently enjoying it with our beautiful weather. Who knows how long we get to keep the sun, so best they enjoy it.

Here is hoping you all have great work week. I will ramble at you later.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Free Comic Book Day 2013

Today Cal and I spent part of our day visiting my local shop (Comics Dungeon) to participate in Free Comic Book Day. While these comics are free to customers, the stores have to purchase them (at a greatly reduced discount). Most stores have big sales to coincide with FBCD and Comics Dungeon was no exception. The shop was full of folks getting their free comics and buying store stock to go along with the freebies. My favorite thing about this day is seeing how many families bring in their kids.

I ditzed this week, not realizing my two week comic pick up weekend had arrived. I'm so used to Free Comic Book Day happening on an off week for me that I didn't have my usual anal-retentive checklist of titles I'm supposed to get. Cal and I left with two weeks worth of new comics, our free comics, a discounted toy and several reduced price sets of comics.

Words from Joan!

Joan joins us with some wise words.
As our beloved grunts have remarked upon, online fem/ literature seems to be increasingly hard to find. However, I suppose a lot of writers subscribe to uberetc, so harken to the words of this wise old lady :)

I've said it time and again: Get Yourselves Beta Readers. Ze amended this: get yourselves *good* beta readers! But how do you know that the person willing to be that is actually qualified?

Short answer: if she doesn't drive you to the point where you want to strangle her, she may not be.

I became aware of this when Astrid (http://ylvapublishing.wordpress.com/) agreed to beta one of my stories. Which was, of course, perfect to begin with. Or so I thought. Let me give you an example: The narrator has just taken her latest interest to a bar, and said interest snuggles up to her. Astrid: "I want to experience the bar. What kind of music is being played? Can you feel the bass in your stomach? Are couples using corners that provide privacy? How does Penny (the barkeeper) look?"

Gawd! Interest snuggles up to Narrator, isn't that enough? Well, no. Astrid was right, of course, and I wrote additional words. Now, do this fifty times and you know why I want(ed) to strangle Astrid. It's also why I want her canonised (alive!).

For the next round she is going to take a closer look at character development -- I'm quaking in my boots... (And when we're done with that, she'll hand me over to one of her editors. Here we go again.)

I've dabbled at beta'ing, but I can't hold a candle to Astrid's thoroughness. So I'll sing her praise. Don't consider yourselves lucky if you get to work with such a good beta -- consider yourselves very, *very* lucky!

Joan

Thank you Joan for coming by and rambling. Greatly appreciated. Got something to say, let us know. Go enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Is it June yet?

Let me tell you, it's been a week. I've come to realize that Spring does odd things to some of the kids at my little school. All of us will be a little more on edge until it's over, otherwise known as the end of school.

Have at those updates!

Time's Winged Chariot

This coming weekend is Easter in the Orthodox Christian Churches. To all our readers in those faiths - Happy Easter.

Not much to write about tonight I'm afraid. Not really in the mood.

One of my cousin's cats (she has four) is dying. She's a good age - 18 - and as is often the case with older cats her kidneys are packing up. She's not suffering yet, the vet says. But she's not eating, she's barely drinking, she's losing weight and she's tottering around on very weak legs. She hasn't got long, and I'm kind of hoping she'll just pass away gently in her sleep. Otherwise it's down to the vet for the needle at the first sign she's in pain. Which is the kind thing to do but is definitely hard on the owner.

All her cats are quite old. This one has a full sibling who also probably hasn't got long, having had a stroke (which she recovered quite well from), a couple of months ago. The other two are boys - one 17 and one 16.

My cousin is already upset. She'll be devastated when it finally happens. I'm a bit sad myself but I'm trying to offer as much support as I can.

It's a bastard when beloved pets die - and they live so much shorter lives than we do so it's a fairly common occurrence. It never gets any easier though. They're not just pets - they're family.

If you have any companion animals - give them an extra hug tonight, from us.

Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.
