Busy Night

Big update with a new site added as well: Women's Murder Club Virtual Season 2. Check it all out, let them know what you think!

Now off to get the kiddos ready for the very fun American tradition of trick-or-treating (or as Ze says "Begging"). I loved it as a kid and my daughter who doesn't even eat chocolate is excited as well. Off we go, enjoy those updates!

Cursed

My Totoro hoodie is cursed. I came to that conclusion today when my morning student yanked my glasses twice, smeared me with mustard and got a few good pinches and grabs in. After those fun times I remembered the last time I wore this shirt I lost my glasses, received a few good pinches and was tagged with mustard.

That all might have been coincidence but this afternoon I was gifted with a head butt. Yes, I'm now a member of the elite at the school. You're not anyone until you've been whacked in the head by a student. Sad to say my glasses also took some of it. I think the next day off I'm making an appointment to get a second pair of glasses just to be on the safe side.

nowt about owt really

It isn't any warmer. At least it hasn't snowed this far south-west. They've had snow in London though. First time it's snowed in London in October since 1934. Funnily enough none of the betting shops are still giving odds on a white Christmas. Smart people. That's why bookies go to the Bahamas for their holidays and punters go to Southend!!

End of October already. Where did the year go. It's almost Guy Fawkes Night. I like Guy Fawkes night. Bonfires and fireworks and tomato soup and potatoes baked in the ashes. Nearly as much fun as Christmas. I'm English remember - don't do Thanksgiving here. Or Hallowe'en really. Though thanks to vast amounts of American TV some of the youngsters now do that awful begging routine known as trick-or-treat. Must remember to buy a water pistol... I'll give 'em trick all right!!

Brrr

The clocks went back last weekend here in the UK. The transition from BST (British Summer Time) to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) also known as UTC - or as my Grandmother liked to call it, back from Government time to God's Time - means that sunrise, instead of happening at the perfectly reasonable hour of between 6.45 & 7 suddenly switched back to closer to 6am. Which is not good news in a week where I don't have to be up that early. Nobody told the damn' pigeons I didn't have to be up until 7. They started tap-dancing along the gutter above my window - no, clog-dancing - with hobnailed boots, at 5.30 this morning. And at roughly the same time somewhere approaching 50,000 blackbirds decided on a world record dawn chorus. I tell you those bloody little beggars are lucky that this is England and there is no ready access to guns or there would be feathers from here to Glasgow!!

The weather seems to have decided that the clocks changing is a good indicator that winter is on the way. So today it gave us a little taster. It rained. Then it rained a lot more. Then it hailed. And it hailed more heavily. Then it hailed so badly that all the little feathered alarm clocks shut up & went into hiding. Right now it's 0c (32f) and they're predicting a really heavy frost with temps in minus figures & a possibility of snow on the moors. I don't want to play any more. Is it spring yet??

We're having some unusually dry, sunny days here in Seattle and we've been trying to take advantage of it. Tonight's swimming with the kids won't be, but hey...the dog will get a nifty walk prior, so that counts.

Enjoy your updates.

More Hype!

Yay! It's not only Friday it's time for me to get my comics. Since I don't live quite as close to my comic shop I've gone to an every two weeks schedule.

My week at work went well. The kid I've been working with is coming along nicely. I'm not really sure it's anything I've done. It could just be the fact that he's finally been allowed to have a one-on-one long enough that he's gotten used to me. Sad to say he's supposed to leave the school after next week. I'm so used to our morning routine that I'll miss the little stinker. My arms won't miss the affectionate (and sometimes not so affectionate) pinches but I will miss seeing him every day.

And finally I've got another site to hype tonight. Buffy fan fiction readers will recognize Electra. She's got her own site now and you can be up-to-date on her fiction in no time by going here: www.angelfire.com/vamp/electra126/updates.html.

Hype Night

Last night I received an email from an author, Ernie, who used to post at the Fingersmith Fever sight frequently. Sadly that site is no longer being updated, but he let me know about a new Sarah Waters site for all of you fanfiction addicts. This new site will also archive all the stories that were stored at the old Fingersmith Fever site.

So take the time and check out www.welovesarahwaters.com and let them know what you think. More stories will be posted and updates to the stories in progress are already under way. So enjoy!

Always keep a treat handy

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes about Harley. I will reply to you all in due course. Depending on whether my *£*$*%*&* email works properly. I'm trying to keep thinking of all the happy times we had. And all the times he did something which made me laugh. Coz companion animals are good at that - making you laugh.

Such as only coming second in his obedience classes (he got a little blue rosette which he promptly ate) because he could not understand that "fetch" meant he should bring the dumbbell back to me not chase after it and lie down on it. Mind you, he only passed his "walking to heel while off the lead" because I secreted a dog treat in my left hand - which he followed. I had to do that as he could only pass the class if he walked to my left and for some strange reason he hated walking on my left. For the rest of his life he walked on my right.

He had the looks of a collie but a setter's height - and a setter's brains unfortunately, so he had a tendency to get carried away when running in the woods. He'd run enthusiastically off the trail and into the trees after squirrels. In fact he didn't have to even see a squirrel. All you had to do was say "squirrel" and he was off. And then he'd get lost. He got lost for three hours once. He finally found the car after I'd all but given up being able to find him. I've never seen a dog look so relieved - or so happy to be told off and made to get into the car without a "good boy" treat. He was overjoyed to see me but I really could have done without him trying to sit in my lap as I was driving. Made it kind of hard to see.

He was a character, maybe when it hurts a bit less I'll write a "dog training for beginners" tale of his exploits. I'm lucky to have known him.

Sad

Hi folks. If you're hoping for one of my usual posts to come along and cheer you up I'm sorry but I'm going to disappoint you. I'm not feeling very chipper right now. I lost a good friend at the end of last week. His name was Harley. Or Mr Davidson when he'd been bad. He was just about 14. He was a collie/setter cross and I got him from a pet shelter when he was 8 months old. He needed a good home. He'd already been passed around from pillar to post 3 times. He was hand-shy too (that automatic duck reaction when you move your hand quickly), so I knew he'd been beaten. I taught him that people could be just as loyal and just as loving as dogs can. He was such a damn' smartarse too. I loved him and he worshipped the ground I walked on.

He'd been showing his age just lately, his legs were shaky and he couldn't walk far any more. He was going blind. But he was still pleased to see me whenever I got home. I came downstairs last Thursday morning and found him looking distressed. His back legs wouldn't work. I called the vet. When she arrived at the house she said he'd had a stroke. I knew what I needed to do. I sat with his head in my lap and stroked him. And she put him gently to sleep.

I know that he's happy now. He's young again and chasing rabbits across green fields in the sunshine while he waits for me to join him. But Lord, I miss him.

Recommendation

After Saturday's chores E and I enjoyed a kid free evening and watched a sweet movie called Return to Me. I wanted to see it because it was co-written and directed by Bonnie Hunt. E saw it in the theater because of her Minnie Driver addiction. She remembered liking it and ordered a copy just so I could see it. If you like character driven chick flicks, give this one a shot.

Sunshine

It's a beautiful day out. Took advantage of the cool, sunny day and got the grass mowed one last time. Trimmed back some bushes and trees for winter and even got some of the dead yard stuff pulled and put in the yard waste bin. I'm going to be a bit sore tonight, but all in all it was worth it. The yard is looking much better.

Best of all was coming inside and having the house all tidied up. As I was off enjoying my yard time Tamara cleaned the place inside. I so prefer cleaning the yard. Hence time well spent. Now we get to rest and watch a DVD tonight.

Now back to your updates. Lots to read! Have fun and enjoy,

Ramble from Maria

A nice ramble for you all to read.
"Married With Children" and "English as a second language"

I've been wanting to do this for a long time, and for too many reasons to go into (mostly procrastination), I just haven't. Today, I'm being a maverick . (Don't get me going on that ::sigh:J)

You don't know me, or know of me (well, some of you might, for better or for worse), but I've been lurking long enough to know that Tamara and Elisa have done a wiz-bang job of not only ensuring that our insatiable reading hunger is well fed, and gently reminding us to also feed the bards, but in keeping us abreast of their ongoing friendship, escapades, and an inside look at real "Married with Children" households. And for those of us that don’t have either the 'married' or the 'children' part, you're doing 1 of 2 things. No. Make that just one thing. Scaring the bejee…um…crap out of some of us.

But I digressed, so back to the feeding part of the reading - I for one, have been extremely lax in doing that (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa), but I'll try to do better.

And now, into that wiz-bang job, throw in Ze. This will be a funner ride now as that English to American speak dictionary get's used. I had the great pleasure of meeting Ze in her part of the world a few years back. Such a nice woman. Tall, dark hair, slender, leather-clad, motorcycle riding, quick to smile, and charming. Wicked, wicked charm. Trust me, you don't stand a chance there. Did I mention charm? And wicked?

Don'tcha just love the way she talks? And because I didn't understand her any better at the time I met her, she quickly translated when she saw the confused look in my face, and compensated nicely (or it could have been a silly assed grin at the accent). You see, she's bi-lingual (nah ah ah, don't even go there, as she would say) and used "American speak (as they call it)."

Those English peeps claim their English is the propah English. I truly don't care if that's true or not, or whether who or not believes it (or not) – I just love to hear the English accent. And when I do, I try not to be obvious, but I follow like a puppy (could anything be less obvious?). Yes Ze, you do have an accent. Adorable.

Thank you ladies for doing this for us.

Maria

Maria you are more than welcome and thank you for the nice words! Okay y'all small update plenty of time to read these stories get some feedback to the authors.

Have a good night.

A Good Day

I haven't broken any bones. My shoulder doesn't hurt much even though I've been painting walls all day. I didn't drop anything, fall over anything, spill anything. And England won their fourth World Cup Qualifier on the trot!! Once again the first half wasn't brilliant - though the Belarus goal was a thing of beauty - but the second half was much better. We've never - and I mean never - in the history of the tournament - won all four of our opening games. Top of the table, twelve points from twelve. They're not used to these heights. The lads will all be getting nosebleeds!!

All together now... Three lions on a shirt, Jules Rimet still gleaming...

Ain't technology wonderful

Bloody email. I tell you - I have more email problems than any six other people I know - all lumped together. In fact I have more email problems that anybody in the known universe. In several universes. In the possibly infinite multiplicity of universes. I don't know why. It doesn't seem to matter what I do. Download to a client. Read off the web. Makes no difference. Every couple of weeks I get mail that's been sent to me fail to arrive, being sent and not getting where it should or just not loading. At the moment it's taking a good five minutes to open each mail. And at least six goes on the reload button. It's obviously my magnetic personality interfering with the internet. Either that or it's time I finally bit the bullet and bought a new laptop. This one's so old I'll swear St Paul wrote his epistles on it.

England played another World Cup Qualifier on Saturday. Yes - I was wearing them - and I bet Joe Smith put his socks on before his trousers and Peggy Brown put the milk in the tea-cup before adding sugar, just to be on the safe side. The first half...well.. let's just say that I'm a painter & decorator so I know exactly how riveting it is watching paint dry... the second half was much better. We won by a decent margin. Just as well really because we were playing Kazakhstan and they're a good one hundred or so places below us in the tables. Embarrassing wouldn't begin to cover it if we hadn't!! I was going to say I'd been to Kazakhstan a few years ago and how friendly the Kazakhs were - and then I realised just how long ago it was that I was there. Bloody Ada!! Where did time go?? It can't be that long ago. I'm not that old am I?? Nah. I'm not. If we go by mental age I'm still a teenager!!

Enough from me. Go read.

Back to Work We Go

Seems like this weekend flew by and back to the fun of work we go. Pumpkin patch took most of yesterday up and today kiddo had a birthday party and in between Tamara and I got the roof cleaned off and ready for another nifty winter. Tamara also helped her kiddo get some homework completed. Busy it has been.

Pumpkin Patch

Time for the annual trip to The Farm in Snohomish. The kids had a blast. Well, Cal and little e had a blast, Duncan tolerated his time there with grace. Sad to say now the kid has to work on a project he's been putting off that's due Monday. We've eaten into his lazy time today by a lot. Sucks being 12 sometimes.

After this update I'm heading to the grocery store for some much needed stocking up. Enjoy 'em!

p.s. Email if you'd like to see our Farm pics. How can you go without seeing children being buried in corn after all?

Days Off...Almost

No school for the kids today and tomorrow. Duncan got to be in charge and I can safely say he was thoroughly sick of his brother by the time I got home. I would have had these days off too but I'm in class for Right Response training. I'm learning all about how to stay safe in a sometimes volatile environment. These past two weeks at work I've just been winging it but it's nice to see that my instincts (and prior experience) had me on the right track. Tomorrow more training and more Calvin time for Duncan. Poor kid.

Beautiful day today. Lovely & sunny. Started the gloss. Proper gloss - none of your modern, awful, one-coat rubbish. None of that satinwood stuff either. Real gloss. There's something magical about high gloss. Whether it's that all the preparation's over with - the sanding, filling, primer, undercoat - all finished. Or whether it's that gloss just flows, it goes on so smoothly it's a pleasure to wield a brush. And the finished article looks so good. Crisp & clean and shiny ooh...shiny....erm, sorry, where was I??. Or maybe it's that I'm a painter - and I love my job.

Hell, maybe it's just that I'm weird.

Or as a friends grandmother used to say (in a thick Burton-upon-Trent accent) "ooh you are a queer ducky". First time she said that to me she nearly killed me. I was eating at the time and I choked on my chip-butty. (That's chips - as in hot, fresh cooked & served with salt & vinegar. Not cold, thin & crispy. Those are crisps on this side of the pond.) Murder by chip-butty. Does that count as a blunt instrument??

I think the pain-killers have affected my mind... nice to know they're affecting something, they're not doing a bit of good for my foot. Ah well... on to the updates, presented for you reading pleasure are...

Boom. boom, boom

Let me hear you say way-o... aaarrrgghhh!! One of the lads brought a portable radio/cd player to work today. He played that song. Over and over and over. I wasn't that fond of it before today but now - if I ever meet the guy who wrote it there'll be violence done!! Other than that it wasn't a bad day. My sister came into town and met me for lunch. We went to the tapas bar because she had a BOGOF voucher. Yes my sister is that daft, going back there with me. (Her friend still isn't speaking to me). You know what they say about being able to take someone anywhere - twice - second time to apologise. Well, I live that saying *g*. Lunch went without a hitch. No crashes, no spillages, no breakages. See - it wasn't my fault!! It really was the fault of the boxers of doom!!

The whole day went swimmingly.

And then I got home. And took my safety boots off. And fell over a chair in the kitchen and broke two toes. Their evil influence extends beyond the fiery pit I set them into. I'm doomed I tell you. Doomed. The ashes of the boxers still haunt me.

Ze (ps BOGOF = buy-one-get-one-free)

Ramble from Jo

Yeah, more folks sharing. This one is from Jo!
Confession time - I'm an activist. That's right - an activist.

The whole activist thing has crept up slowly on me - but after this last week I have to conclude that I'm now there - full blown activist!

Let me explain. Here in NZ we have a primary teachers union called NZEI (NZ Educational Institute) and I'm an active member. Briefly the structure works like this. Each school has a worksite rep who reports to the local branch. Each branch has a District Council that it reports to - there are 12 of these throughout NZ. I'm DC Chair for my DC. Each DC meets around 4 times a year to discuss issues and policies etc. We also plan and run professional development seminars for teachers (and principals, support staff and early childhood educators).

Then, once a year, we have our Annual Meeting where representatives from branches and district councils (and the Maori equivalent) meet in Wellington to debate, endorse and plan. We represent around 49,000 people in our union.

This year we celebrated 125 years of our union (complete with birthday cake) as well as debating an organisational review, rule changes, policy amendments and resolutions. Every representative there can participate in the debate and for the first time I got up to speak - twice! Very scary - first time spontaneously, the second time I had written and re-written what I wanted to say. (I stand to oppose this resolution ... )

The thing about being an activist is that you actually look at the issues/policies/resolutions etc - you research them and you make informed commentary on them.

New Zealand is in the build up to a general election (we do it very differently to the USA buildup) and, unlike previous elections, I will be scrutinising what the various parties are actually saying - I know I'll vote Labour/Green - (ironically our Labour colours are RED and National colours are BLUE) - but I will be informed and will debate with candidates when and where possible.

yours politically,

Jo

In reality I think more of us need to become activists, so good luck and good job, Jo!

Now back to the regularly scheduled programming, enjoy.

Lazy Sunday

After yesterday's errand running, today's pace is downright slothful. We took the kids to see Igor. Well, the kids minus Duncan. Mike and Duncan saw Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Duncan was ambivalent about the movie but then he really wanted to be home playing Runescape. Mike recommends it though. And we liked Igor as well.

Tonight we'll have soup for dinner and continue to be slugs in preparation for the work week ahead. The kids (except for little e) get Thursday and Friday off. I would have it off as well but get to be trained for two days in how to be safe around unpredictable students. On the plus side I get paid extra for that training. Keen!

Enjoy 'em....

Weekend Update

A day filled with wind, rain and chores. One rodent named Midnight chewed through his second cage in less than a year, hence a new one was acquired and set up today. One fish tank was cleaned in hopes that the fish will survive a bit longer. Groceries including a Costco run has been completed as well. Next up is preparations for dinner. So it's been a busy weekend so far and it most likely will continue. Sometimes we actually do get something accomplished.

Back to the updates. Enjoy.

Ramble from Phair

Yep, we're lucky she likes to share!
It was just a year ago I wrote about my leap to iPod Nano. Well, it was more of a push than a volitional movement. My sister gave me the gadget as a gift which sort of forced the issue for me. I could ignore the momentum of popular technology and cling to my records or I could let myself be absorbed into the mass movement to digital storage.

Of course, I joined up to the cult of the ever fleeting cutting edge.

I am happy to report, my assimilation into the techno generation has been relatively positive. It really doesn't matter I needed my nephew to assist me with the car adapter. He's a music major in college. He should know how to do stuff like that.

So, how far have I come from the original 18 songs? How close have I come to maxing out my 9000 song memory? A little drum roll if you would...221.

Try not to be disappointed in me. At least I'm in triple digits. If you break it down then I'm adding 16 songs a month, give or take. At this rate, I'll be able to fill up my sweet little red Nano in…46 years. Um, well, it's clear I'll never need to buy another one. Can't you just see me rocking away in the nursing home listening to Lost in the Supermarket?

In no particular order, here are a 18 new additions which receive a good amount of play daily on my Nano:

It's bad you know - R.L Burnside
The winter song - Angel
Breath me - Sia
Use me - Bill Withers
Pepper - Butthole Surfers
Witchi Tai To - Jim Pepper
Wichita Lineman - Jimmy Webb
Don't I hold you - Wheat
Super Bon Bon - Soul Coughing
I can't tell you why - The Eagles
Lotta love - Nicolette Larson
Cuts you up - Peter Murphy
Shame - Evelyn Champagne King
California Love - 2pac
Who love you - Frankie Valli & The four seasons
Falling Slowly - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Running up that hill - Kate Bush
Running up that hill - Placebo
