A Splendid Saturday

We slept in and that started it off great...complete fun day with my wife. A few chore things were completed and doggie got to the off leash park but over all it was a nice easy day. Here is hoping for the same tomorrow.

Enjoy the updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Date Afternoon

I had the day off today. E left work early and we tried to go and see Cake. Now if I had actually looked at the movie listing for Friday showings instead of Wednesday showings I would have noticed Cake wouldn't be showing today.

Our alternate venue was in Seattle and Friday traffic into and out of Seattle is really awful. We ended up skipping Cake and seeing Big Eyes at a discount theater in our neighborhood.

I think we would have enjoyed Cake more. Big Eyes was okay...not a world beater as my dad would say. I guess Cake will be in our future as a Redbox rental.

Words from Joan

Yeah, ramble away Joan!
PEgIdA

You may have never heard that acronym. It's for "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of Europe" (is islamisation even a word?), and it's a German acronym.

This organisation made quite some noise here during the last few months. People here tend to be afraid of Islam, confusing it with "islamistic", like, say, Bin Laden or the so-called ISIS. Many people attended demonstrations of pegida. But -- what did they find? A bunch of nazis who were too coward to meet the necessity of living side by side with Muslims, which make up a relatively small part of our population. Many of those who live here are entrepreneurs or just collegues working next to you. So WTF? Many people realised that and simply turned their backs on pegida.

I am very glad to hear on the news that pegida has all but disbanded. Maybe, just maybe, Germany has come off age. At least, I have one less reason to be ashamed of the country I live in.

Joan

Wow, I think everywhere has some whacko's. Glad the group is disbanding. We have some groups that consider themselves "Patriotic" and I would consider them racist.

Here's hoping for a little more intelligence and a little less racism. And, Joan, good to see you and please come by anytime.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Tired & Blank

It's half-past one. I have to be up at six. I didn't sleep very well last night either - having pulled a muscle in my back, cutting down my sister's leylandii, which had grown too high. I'm absolutely shattered and I can't think of a thing to say.

Anybody got a ramble for us??

Enjoy your updates. Good night and may your God/s go with you.

Oświęcim

Today was Holocaust Memorial Day (here) known to other countries as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I went to Auschwitz once - back in the 1980s. I didn't sleep very well for several days afterwards. It's impossible to go there and not be overwhelmed.

Never forget.

Spring Already?

We're experiencing record warm temps here in the Pacific Northwest. I heard on the radio that it reached 63 (17.22 C) at Seatac airport today. I know when I did my after lunch walk around the track with a student neither one of us needed our coats. Beautiful blue skies and sun are in our forecast for most of this week.

And on the other coast they're battening down for a Winter storm that may break records. All of you East Coasters, stay safe.

Final Game

We are off the final basketball game. Ultimate starts end of February so we have a small break of weekend games. Being Sunday the end of weekend is here. Back to work we go.

Enjoy your updates. Peace, Health and Happiness.

Bah...Rain Already!

Another Saturday class for me so I was gone most of the day. I did manage to learn a little bit at the class *and* I had time to stop at the comic store for comics on the way home. I'm definitely ready to sleep in tomorrow.

Our weather this past week has been decidedly Spring-like. It's been threatening rain all day but no luck so far. My sinuses are wishing it would go ahead and unload.

Bucket Trucks

We had numerous bucket trucks in front of our house today. The usual bucket truck was not big enough so they called in the big boy. Internet is back and we are very happy about it. The phone hot spot works but this is just easier all around and a bit faster. Also my phone is not running quiet as hot this evening and getting a break.

So yeah to internet and Friday. That makes for a happy family.

Enjoy your update.

We still miss you, internet....

Never cancel an appointment you have with a Cable/Internet Service Provider just because your internet magically reappears. Chances are it will magically disappear the next day when everyone gets home from work/school. Then you end up waiting two more days for another opening in the repair schedule. And when they check your line you get to wait one more day for a bucket truck to complete the repair.

Tomorrow we should finally have our internet access back. The kids have been great about it. We've used the cell phone hotspot to allow them to do any homework that requires online work.

I've done less game playing and more reading. E did a little less game playing but she did succumb to playing on her phone and using the hotspot for her tablet.

By this time tomorrow we shouldn't have to use cell data to do this update.

What is This Life

if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare??

I had occasion to be on the other side of the city today. (Hmm. That sounds like I'm giving evidence it court, doesn't it?? ... "I had occasion to be in the vicinity of the jeweller's, on Friday last, when I observed the defendant break the window, m'lud").

Anyway - I was at the top of the hill, heading back down the the city centre (we don't have "downtowns" in the UK - we have city/town centres). The city is in a river valley, surrounded by hills, and has spread upwards in all directions, so you get a magnificent view across it from all the edges.

I looked across the city, and dominating the skyline was the cathedral. It's not the tallest building - there are three or four taller - and a lot more than that out at the university - but, because of the way the mediaeval city was laid out the cathedral still looks, when seen from the hillside, as though it's taller.

I stopped and looked at it for a bit. And then I thought, six hundred years ago travellers came over this hill and looked down at the city and saw what I now see. They saw that cathedral - but it was new and clean, and shining. And I was awestruck for a while.

Then I wondered if, six hundred years from now, there will be any humans left to walk over that hill and stare down at the cathedral, or if we will have destroyed ourselves before then. Earth will survive, nature will recover, new life-forms will evolve which can live in the mess we create, but can we??

I decided thoughts like that we too depressing and went back to being awestruck, thinking about the vast swathe of history between those who built it and me. Thinking of all the thousands of people who stood where I stood and looked at that wonderful building. And I felt kinship with them.

We don't stand and stare enough these days. Too rushed, too busy, too pre-occupied. Take a moment in your busy day to just stop. Watch the clouds. Listen to the birds. Breathe. Be at peace.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Spammers Suck

There aren't as many updates as usual tonight, I'm afraid. And I've probably missed quite a few because AO3 is still doing that annoying download restriction thing. I quite understand why they've felt it necessary to do this - they recently had a total tosser uploading a whole load of idiotic, pointless, spam posts - but it's a right PITA to work with.

I will never understand why people do these things. Spam sites, hack sites for "fun", create viruses, troll... what's the point?? If upsetting people, causing trouble, costing people time and money, destroying things other people have created or worked hard on, just because you can, is your idea of fun... well..

It's as mean, nasty, pointless, and stupid as those tossers who smash shop windows or destroy flower beds for "fun". It's not clever. It's not amusing. It's boring.

Get a life!!

We Miss You, Internet

We are addicted and we know it. Happily mind you, but we're missing it currently. It's a good thing my phone can be a "hotspot" and another good thing is that Tamara and I NEVER come close to using all our data. So this month we may actually use perhaps 50% instead of 10%.

Tomorrow the cable repair folks should appear and I know I'm looking forward to it. On the flip side I made some rice krispy treats and Ranger cookies, so we will have lots of snacks for the week.

On another note today is a formal holiday in the USA celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man of integrity and Peace. I wonder if he were alive today what would he say?

Let us hope we can find that Peace.

Have a great week.

Wind and Football

There was some excitement here last night thanks to a windstorm that swept in around midnight. Both of us were woken up by multiple worrisome clunks on the roof. I could actually hear the wind howl and the trees were swaying enough that we thought one might topple over on to a house.

E ended up moving to the couch. I stayed in the nice warm bed. I told her that if I was squashed by a tree falling on our bedroom to remember that I loved her. She ended up coming back to our (thankfully) unsquashed bed around 3.

This afternoon I got up on the roof and found a few branches. One was a decent size but not big enough to damage anything. Now our roof is cleared of limbs and the yard waste bin is full.

Not suprisingly the wind knocked out power all over the area. Comcast cable/internet is likewise down all over. Not such a good thing for this town considering the Seahawks played the Green Bay Packers today. Around 11am we even saw a neighbor toting his television set to his car. Likely heading to another location with cable.

We don't have internet thanks to the Comcast outage (this update is coming to you thanks to E's cellphone operating as a wireless hotspot). We probably could have watched the game using our handy antenna to bring in the local channels. Instead we decided to go to Costco thinking it might be a little deserted with folks staying in to watch the game. We were right...the crowds were less than Costco-sized.

Once we got home the game was in full swing. Twitter caught us up on the sportsball competition. We took Max to the dog park and knew the minute the Seahawks clinched the win. You could hear fireworks going off everywhere and a local sports bar near the dog park sent up lots of whoopin' and hollerin'.

In two weeks Cal and I will be overwhelmed by kids and adults wearing their Seahawks gear to school. Guess I need to break down and get Cal a Seahawks t-shirt so he can join in the fun. There are bound to be oodles of group pictures and videos at his school just like last year when they went to the Super Bowl.

Spinning

The world seemed to be spinning a bit faster for me today. Antihistamines and a nap helped a whole bunch. My inner ears and head still feel a bit full, but over all much better. I will do some more drugs tonight and hope to keep my dizzy episode at bay. I sure don't want to be sick on my three day weekend.

Here is hoping you all are doing well.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

MLK Assembly Day

We had a very nice Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly at school today. The choir sang two songs and we had a guest speaker. He talked about the fact that kids their age were involved in peaceful protests with Dr. King.

I should mention that our assemblies are organized and run by the kids in the leadership classes. They always do a fantastic job.

Any time I hear people griping about "kids today" I'm happy I have a job that allows me to see the kids today. They have far different challenges than when I was a kid. Challenges they handle quite well.

Three day weekend ahead for us. I plan on doing some tidying and E will finally get those outside Christmas lights down.

Now I'll let you get to reading.

Thanks

Thanks everybody who sent condolences. Individual replies follow.

I've not been able to properly check AO3 tonight as they're playing silly-buggers with download limits - but I've done my best. There's still a fair bit for you to read.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Sad

For those of you following my adventures, and bonding, with my little ferrety-ferret.

She was put to sleep at 3pm last Thursday. She suffered a stroke in the night of Wednesday/Thursday. I knew something was wrong when I took her food in and she didn't come for it - or to greet me.

I opened her sleeping compartment and pulled back the blankets. She was there curled up - but I could see she was really, really poorly. She lifted her head and save a weak "dook" when she saw me and tried to drag herself to me - her back legs wouldn't work.

I rushed her to the vet but there was nothing they could do.

I held her and said goodbye and she quietly drifted off to sleep.

I am so going to miss her. It was a privilege getting to know her. She was a lovely little thing and a joy to watch as she played with her toys - and the watering-can - and explored the garden.

You wouldn't think such a little thing could leave such a bloody big hole in your heart...

Where does it all go? The weekend is coming to a close even our son thought it was moving fast (he thought today was Saturday). Sadly no, Sunday and work and school start up again tomorrow. Here is hoping the work week can slip by quickly to an upcoming 3 day

May Peace find the the world and definitely give a little extra to France.

The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

And when murdering scum are forgotten the martyred writers, cartoonists, journalists, aid workers, teachers, pupils, will be remembered.

Our thoughts are with the people of France tonight.

Anybody got a ramble for us??

Know of a decent femslash fic website, that still updates, that we could be checking but aren't?? (Preferably not a chaotic nightmare like FF.net).

Twelfth Night and Comets

Right... today is the feast of Epiphany for the western Christian traditions, and some of the eastern and orthodox Christian tradition. We wish our readers of those faiths a good feast.

Today is Christmas Day for the Armenian Christian churches. We wish any readers of those faith a merry Christmas.

Tomorrow is Christmas Day for the remainder of the Eastern Orthodox traditions, and for the Coptic Christian traditions (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon) and also for the Ethiopian Orthodox church - we wish any readers of those faiths a Merry Christmas.

............................

Since it's Epiphany, Twelfth Night has come and gone - which is traditionally when Christmas decorations should be taken down. So ours are down and packed away until next Christmas. The room looks very big and very bare without them.

And I so did not want to go back to work yesterday...

I did want to see the comet - and I've been attempting for the last few nights, but it's been overcast. Tonight, however, it's clear. The moon is so bright that it's making it hard to see the stars. I did manage to spot it - fantastic (you'll need binoculars or a telescope unless you're somewhere where there is absolutely no light-pollution).

Bloody cold standing in the garden, in the dark, staring up at the sky though.

Routines

Back to work and school for our family today. Everyone seemed to do well when we checked in with the kids at dinner. Most likely the end of the week will be tougher and we're all a bit more tired from all the routines.

The New Year

I better watch the year carefully as the last one flew by. This one will hold more house stuff for us. We await all the unknowns and yet we look forward to all the change that it entails. As change is never ending we can hope for nothing but good.

Monday starts a new week back to our basics we go. Enjoy it all.

Movie Day

Today we went to see The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. I haven't enjoyed these as much as I did Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. This installment was beautiful to watch but, like the first two, not a movie I need to watch again.

We did manage to see it in a spectacular theater...The Cinerama. The Cinerama was always a great place to see a movie but they recently upgraded and now it's spectacular. The sound, the seats, the screen...there truly wasn't a bad seat in the theater. The only downside to the new place is assigned seating. It's needlessly complicated and too fussy for seeing a movie.

That said...if you're ever in Seattle and want to catch a flick, visit The Cinerama.
