Eurovision

Spring finally arrived. Yesterday and today were brilliant. Warm, sunny, blue skies, glorious. And I'm working indoors this week... Can't win, can I??

The Torch (yes, that torch, the Olympic Flame, it needs capitals) came through Devon over the weekend. And yes, I was excited, bouncy, and just like a big kid about it. Only 66 days to go.

Been watching the first semi-final for the Eurovision Song Contest this evening. Oh Lord, there are some dire entries... but then, I say that every year. And every year I'm baffled by the voting. And Jedward got through. Oh Lord, why?? And what on earth possessed the people in charge of our entry to choose Englebert Humperdink to represent us?? Couldn't we at least have picked someone born after the second world war?? Or did they hope he'd appeal to the Russian Grannies?? (Incidentally - be careful if you Google "Russian grannies" - the results can permanently scar your psyche!!)

The Eurovision is supposed to be about the song, not the singer, the backing group, the staging, the dancers, the fire-eaters, wire-walkers, or gimmicks - the SONG. It's seldom anything to do with the actual song these days, it's more about all the other things.

It can be dire, and it can be wonderful. It can be predictable (block voting, anyone??), and it can be completely inexplicable (Finnish heavy metal) or embarrassing (Guildo Horn).

I do love it though.
