Thursday Evening

Another week is coming to a close. Wow, this year seems to be flying by. Oddly enough they all seem to be doing that now. Well nothing much on our end and the weekend holds time for T and me alone. Seems odd not to have plans or such that involve other people or the kids. Just the two of us. I think we will treat ourselves to go see Dark Shadows. Other than that our weekend is wide open.

On another note. You sick of our rambles? Come ramble for us! We could use some new voices. You know where to find us.

Now back to the updates, enjoy!

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Boom

I wasn't sure I'd be able to update tonight. Didn't know if we'd have the electricity back on or not. As you can see we have and I can.

Been without power all day though. It started in the wee small hours. At about 1.30am. There was an almighty great bang, woke me up, and my first thought was, "Christ, someone's hit the house." We're on the corner, next to the car-park, and cars park within centimetres of the side of the house. Then I decided it wasn't loud enough for that - and the house wasn't falling down - so my next guess was that the fence had blown over. (Several folk around here have lost fences recently in the gales). Looked out of the window, fence intact, wall intact, no sign of anything. So I decided that my cousin's cats must have knocked a chair over or something, and I went back to sleep.

At 5.30am I got up. There was no coffee. I could have sworn I set the timer last night. I put the kettle on to make a cafetiere instead. Or at least I tried. Nothing happened. No light in the fridge either. No hot water. I checked the fuse-box. Nope, no problems there. I put some trousers on (I hadn't dressed yet as I hadn't showered) and went to check with the neighbours. They didn't have power either. The woman across the road came outside to tell us she'd rung the electricity company and they were here, working already. They informed us that the bang in the night had been our sub-station generator exploding. They were working as fast as they could to fix it, a new generator was on the way, but it would be evening at the earliest before power was back.

Great. Couldn't shower (that's electric too). No hot water (boiler's gas but ignition is electronic, not pilot-light). No microwave, so no porridge. No toaster. At least the hob is gas, and we had matches (electronic ignition once again), so we could boil a saucepan of water for coffee.

I was not a happy bunny though, off to work, unwashed, with no breakfast. Put me off my stride for the rest of the day.

I was very glad to get home at six and find the power back. I could have my shower, And coffee. And watch the women's football on the telly. And most important - surf on my 'puter. It's amazing how many things you take for granted - until something small disrupts them. Am now seriously considering forking out vast sums of money for solar panels... I want to be prepared next time something goes boom in the night.

See you next week folks. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Flags

Didn't have our usual Whitsun bank holiday this week - because of the Diamond Jubilee it's been moved to next week, and we have an extra day added so both Monday and Tuesday of next week are holidays. Great - two days without pay...

Our street is not celebrating. We are not having a street party. Nobody is flying the Union Flag (flag - not Union Jack - it's only a jack if it's on a ship). We're not really monarchists round here.

I did buy a Union Flag last week though. I always put an English flag in my window whenever the national football or rugby teams are playing. (The Union Flag is exactly what it says - the flag of the union - the United Kingdom. It is not the flag of England.) And with the Olympics coming here, I wanted to put one up to show support for the British team. I found that I own five English flags. One with the three lions of the football team's badge in the centre of the cross. One with the Lancastrian rose of the rugby union team in the centre. One with the shield (with the extra cross and date) of the rugby league team. And two with just the cross of St. George.

But not one single Union Flag. I did not own a flag of the United Kingdom. Not one. How appalling. But then, most Scots don't either, they own a Saltire. And I expect most Welsh folk don't but I bet they own Y Ddraig Goch. Chances are that in Northern Ireland protestants own a Union Flag, along with a Red Hand flag. But the republican community aren't likely to. They're much more likely to own an Irish Tricolour.

I really wish I hadn't left it until now to buy one though. Because the price has trebled lately. I could have bought three Stars-and-Stripes for the price of one Union Flag. Or five Ugandan flags!! Though why on earth the little shop here in my town in south-west England stocks Ugandan flags is anybody's guess. We don't exactly have a huge Ugandan population. Polish now... yeah... but no Polish flags, sold out I expect, we have a large Polish community.

But anyway, I now have my flag. And in just 58 days it will hang in my window. I can't wait. *bounces*

End of the long weekend....

I'm pooped. Today we had relatives over for a cook out. I'm not pooped from cooking, however . I'm pooped from talking. Today the two men did all the cooking while the kids played and the women talked. The upside of that was...no cooking. The downside...they use a lot of dishes when they cook. Another upside...great food. Grilled salmon and chicken (with a mango salsa), fresh corn on the cob, salad, Southern style fresh green beans and cake for dessert. I'm stuffed and all talked out.

Back to school and work for me and the kids. E has a day to rest, then back to work on Wednesday.

Hope your weekend was relaxing. Enjoy the updates!

Productive Day

I think E got her wish for an easy day. We tidied for the relatives who will be joining us for a cook out on Monday. Then we did a little grocery shopping.

My Uncle Charlie loves to fish so he's driving to the Columbia River tomorrow and is hoping to catch something to grill. While he's fishing we'll be taking my Aunt Barbara and Aunt Sari (technically former aunt due to divorce but to me she'll always be Aunt Sari) sightseeing in downtown Seattle. This may be interesting since it's Memorial Day weekend and many things are happening downtown. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we survive.

Yippee!

I love long weekends. Tamara has some aunts and uncles in town that we will try and connect up with on Sunday. Most likely some chores and cleaning tomorrow, but over all I think the weekend should be fairly easy going and that is splendid with me. This week has felt like a month and I am feeling very tired and dizzy and I need to get that under control.

Here is hoping where ever you are you enjoy the weekend!

Peace, Health and Happiness.

On Feeling Queer.

Tomorrow is Ascension Day in the Eastern Christian traditions - we wish our Orthodox readers a good feast. This Sunday is Pentecost in the Western Christian traditions - good feast to all of you, too. Sunday/Monday also marks the Jewish festival of Shavuot, a good feast to our Jewish readers. Monday also marks the Ascension of Baha'u'llah a good day to any readers we have who follow the Baha'i faith.

Author K G MacGregor post a question on her Facebook page and also a blog post on her website about the word queer. I'm one of those people who is uncomfortable with using that word to describe LGBT folk, mainly because when I was growing up it was the insult of choice. I've been called it with hate, derision, anger. It's been used to show me how much the speaker despised me, sometimes with the addition of spitting. It's been accompanied by violence. It's not a word I associate with anything positive. However, I do know there's a whole generation who are more than happy to use it, who have reclaimed it from the bigots, who are comfortable with it. Some of them find that any single one of letters in the alphabet soup of LGBT is too narrow to define them. More power to their elbows.

Today though I was reminded that there's also a large chuck of British society, (mostly rural), for whom that word has never meant LGBT, has never been used as an insult.

One of our roofers - a local boy (or biy as the local dialect has it) with a thick Devon accent - informed us all at tea-break, "Oi feels praper queer 'smorning. Us 'ad a bit o' biled bacon for us tea and Oi thinks t'were off." Which roughly translates as, "I feel proper queer this morning. We had a bit of boiled bacon for our dinner and I think it had gone off."

There you go - locally queer means unwell or nauseated. He did look a bit green about the gills I have to admit.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Eurovision

Spring finally arrived. Yesterday and today were brilliant. Warm, sunny, blue skies, glorious. And I'm working indoors this week... Can't win, can I??

The Torch (yes, that torch, the Olympic Flame, it needs capitals) came through Devon over the weekend. And yes, I was excited, bouncy, and just like a big kid about it. Only 66 days to go.

Been watching the first semi-final for the Eurovision Song Contest this evening. Oh Lord, there are some dire entries... but then, I say that every year. And every year I'm baffled by the voting. And Jedward got through. Oh Lord, why?? And what on earth possessed the people in charge of our entry to choose Englebert Humperdink to represent us?? Couldn't we at least have picked someone born after the second world war?? Or did they hope he'd appeal to the Russian Grannies?? (Incidentally - be careful if you Google "Russian grannies" - the results can permanently scar your psyche!!)

The Eurovision is supposed to be about the song, not the singer, the backing group, the staging, the dancers, the fire-eaters, wire-walkers, or gimmicks - the SONG. It's seldom anything to do with the actual song these days, it's more about all the other things.

It can be dire, and it can be wonderful. It can be predictable (block voting, anyone??), and it can be completely inexplicable (Finnish heavy metal) or embarrassing (Guildo Horn).

I do love it though.

It's raining...cookies.

Our rain has returned and it's most welcome. I've noticed the Pacific Northwest fauna doesn't do well with too many dry days. So while E spent the day at MLA I puttered around the house and enjoyed the sound of rain.

Thanks to my lazy Sunday we now have four batches of Ranger cookies to eat. I wasn't sure how many batches E normally makes so I texted the question "single or double batch?" Her reply, "More." I took that to mean more than a double batch. I opted for four batches after my "triple?" didn't get a reply. Turns out she meant a double batch would be best. On the plus side I discovered that the mixer isn't quite big enough for four batches of Ranger cookies and we have a buttload of cookies for the next couple of weeks (the freezer is my friend).

Final Day

The beautiful day today brought us the final Ultimate Frisbee games (2 of them) of the season. The kids did great...ended up their season in second place. Not bad for a first year team. But I must admit to looking forward to the weekends becoming free again. I like my slug ability and have missed it greatly.

Tomorrow I officially start my work week as the Medical Library Association meeting is in town and I will be spending a full day there and most of next week as well. Fun or boring, I will have to let you know later. I am hoping to learn a few things and hope to pick up some good schwag from the vendors booths.

Now back to your update, enjoy.

Okay, I screwed up and didn't post in time for y'all to catch this one live. Good news...you can still go listen to the show.
Warrior Princess 101: Fans Discuss "Xena"

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2012/05/18/warrior-princess-101-fans-discuss-xena

F4F Radio has been discussing "Xena: Warrior Princess", even now enormously popular among fans of lesbian pairings on TV because of the Xena/Gabrielle relationship, every six months for the past two years. Looks like it's time for a fifth conversation, and appropriately enough we welcome back author/filmmaker Kim Pritekel, who has been involved with the last three Xena shows as either a guest or a cohost. Rather than focus on fan fiction or "uberfic" this time, however, tonight we'll be discussing the television show itself. Kim and I will be joined, not by Xena fanfic authors, but by three longtime fans of the show - Zea Apa, Kelly Neal and Adm_Hawthorne. And we'll be talking about EVERYTHING we loved most about the show, from the subtext to the story arcs to the comedy.

...if I had anything of value to say. Sorry y'all are out of luck.

Another work week coming to a close and I look forward to the weekend. Unfortunately mine is cut short by a work conference that starts on Sunday morning. I will enjoy watching my daughter's Ultimate team play their finals on Saturday and will cram a weekend's worth of relaxation into that day.

Hope you all have a great Friday.

Not a Lot to Say

We wish all our Christian (in the western traditions of Christianity) readers a good Ascension Day tomorrow.

The swifts are back!! Summer can't be far away.

You could believe that today - it was sunny, warm, a lovely day.

Not much to say tonight I'm afraid. And there's not really that many updates either. Ah well. Enjoy those that are there.

Have a good week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Clothes Shopping Sucks

Can't think of much to say tonight. Perhaps just a quick note about the perils of shopping in a hurry.

I hate shopping. Especially for clothes. I'm the kind of shopper who, on finding something I like and which fits, will quickly grab four identical-but-for-colour of that particular garment, run for the till, pay, and get the hell out asap. This works well - mostly.

I needed a new pair of jeans last week. Just a basic pair. Nothing fancy. And I refuse to pay silly prices for jeans. This means I need somewhere cheap. Unfortunately Jean Genie is no more, (I swear it wasn't my fault even though I did cause havoc there a couple of years ago). Primark has gone bust (not that I'd shop there anyway, they had a reputation for using child/sweatshop labour). That pretty much left QS. I've never been there before.

I went on Thursday.

Jeans were right at the back. Three lots of shelving. (Dark blue, light blue, black.) Each shelf a different waist size. Three compartments per shelf. Each compartment a different style. (Straight leg, "comfort-fit", and boot-cut.) Each pair marked with a very large sticker giving waist and inside-leg measurements. At eye-level there was a pair of light blue, comfort-fit, 30-waist, 32-leg. Perfect. My size. I grabbed them and headed for the till. The assistant asked if I wanted to try them on. I didn't. I hate trying on clothes. I got them home. Ripped all the labels off and hung them over a chair.

On Sunday I put them on.

Waist 30 all right - but if that's a 32 leg then I've shrunk a hell of a lot since the last time I bought jeans.

I took them off, got my steel tape out and measured them. Leg 36. Great. I fished all the labels back out of the waste-paper bin, managed to find the receipt in there too. Now I just have to find the time to trek back into town and change them.

I should at least have unfolded them and held them up against me!! Pah!!

Quick note:-

There are still spaces available on the Dog Days of Summer Calendar if you feel like signing-up and writing something for it.

Happy Mother's Day!

Today was all about rest...well, for me and Duncan anyway. E and little e had an all day outdoor event. Cal went with a friend to the Family Fun Center for the day.

Duncan has been camped in front of the tv playing Minecraft for the Xbox with friends online. I made a trip out to get my comics. I came home and washed and folded a lot of clothes. Strawberry-banana muffins were made. I read some comics and watched a couple episodes of Grimm. It was really quiet around the house. All in all, not a bad way to spend part of Mother's Day weekend.

Springtime

We're finally getting our Spring sunshine. Duncan isn't happy about it. He prefers our rainy overcast days. I like both. The sun is a nice change and being able to get the kids at school out to a park doesn't hurt either.

Even though the weekend is supposed to be nice I'd dearly love to go see The Avengers. I didn't go opening weekend because I wanted to take the kids to see it as well. Hopefully we can fit in a showing on Sunday before I have to take them to Mike for the week.

You have a good amount to read tonight. Have at it.

Well Done, Mr. President

I had been planning a more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger ramble about the vote in North Carolina. I was going to question whether the US Declaration of Independence was going to be amended to read We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, but some are more equal than others, And to wonder if the unmarried-but-recognised-in-law straight couples who voted for that new law realised that they'd just removed any legal protections, rights, or advantages that they had previously enjoyed.

I was going to ponder on the fact that the last time North Carolina voted to ban any kind of marriage it would have made the President's parents' marriage illegal, and that this was not a good precedent to follow.

I was going to speculate as to whether the law-makers had read the US Constitution (I have, and I'm not a US citizen) - specifically amendment 14.

And then President Obama stood up and changed everything.

Well, OK, not quite everything - because none of the discriminatory, and quite possibly unconstitutional, laws have gone. The President hasn't wielded a magic pen and struck them off. But undoubtedly things have changed. The possibilities are there now.

Perhaps the USA isn't going to turn into a totalitarian, misogynistic, oppressive theocracy based on The Handmaid's Tale after all. Perhaps it really will be the Land of the Free. And that all of its people will be equal in law. For the sake of all my US American friends I do hope so.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you

Books, Rain, and Decisions.

I didn't think I was going to have much in the way of updates for you tonight - and then the RAOB updated and doubled my numbers. That was a bit of luck. I was starting to search a whole bunch of websites I never report on - mainly because they're either FF dot net type, and they're a right pita to check through, and can take hours to find even one story. Or they're largely filled with enthusiastic-but-somewhat-less-than competent output, and it's a hell of a job finding something literate, let alone worth reading. Fortunately I was able to spare you the torture.

It's been raining most of the time since I was last here. It's a bloody nuisance when it rains so much. I know we need the rain, the water table is drastically reduced, but if the rain is really bad (and it has been) and I'm working outdoors then I simply don't work. And that means I don't get paid. And that severely curtails my book-buying. And then I am not happy. OK - I have several thousand books already, and I do like to re-read books. In some cases I might read the same book 3 or 4 (or more if it's a particular favourite) times a year. But I like new books too. And there's a lot more of interest being published these days. Once I could own every book in my favoured genres. Not now. Now I need to win the lottery to afford that.

It's not all bad at work, though. We've completed the first phase of preparation and begun the first wave of construction. In fact we've built our first row of houses for the new town. Now we just have to decorate (and built the other 3,000 of course *g*). This means I will be working at my trade - and indoors - for a bit. So come June I can buy more books... (this is me grinning like a fool now). Hmm... what to buy... another Robbi McCoy?? (I read For Me & My Gal - it's excellent.) There's a Lynn Ames I haven't bought yet (bad fan - should have bought it months ago). And I'm still missing one of Georgia Beers' titles... I want a copy of Plutarch's Lives too... decisions, decisions

Weekend Fun

E and I finished making around 100 tiny cupcakes for little e's cupcake walk at the May Faire tomorrow. Sounds bad but 100 tiny cupcakes ends up being only two boxes of cake mix. Fortunately E found some inexpensive tiny cupcake pans. I had one and it only held twelve. Being able to do 24 at a time was a big help. And they only take 10 minutes to bake. Bonus!

Tomorrow May Faire, Free Comic Book Day and a game of Ultimate Frisbee. Not the all day ordeal E had last week but it'll take up a good chunk of the day. Now if the weather forecast holds true we'll be good.

Enjoy 'em.

Liz Woz 'Ere

City centre was closed off today. Buses re-routed. Helicopters patrolling overhead. The area around Police HQ at one of the routes in to the city was also sealed off. And so was the area around the university.

Her Maj was in town. With her hubby.

To be precise, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her consort, His Royal Highness Prince Philip. (Though I prefer his pidgin title - Man-him-belonga-Mrs-Queen).

She came to visit the newly rebuilt Princesshay. Which is Princesshay because she opened the original shopping centre there when she was still Princess Elizabeth. It was part of the re-building of the city after the Baedecker raids.

After that bit of the visit was done she tootled off to the Uni to open the new Forum, and grab a bite to eat.

It's the third time she's been here while I've lived in the area. And every time it's been great for all those people who love her and want to see her and a right PITA for those of us who want to go about our business without massive disruption and inconvenience.

No, I didn't go and try to see her. I just tried to get to-and-from work. I might have made the effort if it had been Annie. I've got a lot of time for Annie. She's a hard worker and she has an evil sense of humour. (Yes, I have seen her and spoken to her.) Oh yeah, Annie. Her Royal Highness Anne, The Princess Royal. Good sort. Lot more sense than any of her brothers. Shame she couldn't be queen.

Well, fair bit for you to read tonight. So I'll bid you farewell. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

What's That Big Yellow Thing.

That round thing, up there, in the sky. Yes, folks. The sun shone today. Nothing unusual in that, you say. Ah, but this is the first day we've had without rain in a fortnight. We're not used to sunshine any more.

We've had three times our usual month's worth of rain in that time. The wettest April for over 100 years. The river here (the city where I live) is currently under flood warning, that's a higher state than a mere flood alert. Flood alert means "hey, river's a bit high, keep a watch on it." Flood warning means "build a boat - now!!" Fortunately I live right at the top of a very steep hill. (City's in a river valley - it's all hills on the edges). Bet the people in those very expensive quayside houses are nervous. Another day like Sunday (gales, torrential rain) and they'll be paddling between rooms.

And they still say there's a drought!!!!!

OK - greetings time. Hope those of our readers in Teutonic countries had a good Walpurgisnacht yesterday. And for our Pagan and Wiccan readers - good Beltane (in the North) Samhain (in the South).

And a good International Workers' Day to all.

The organisers of Femslash Day are running a poll and would like your input
It's that time of year again. Planning is in full force for this year's International Day of Femslash and FemSlashCon, 14-15th July, with an array of new and exciting events, such as Femslash Radio, an IDF ARG, a bumper Audio-fic Library, and more challenges and ficathons than you can shake a stick at, also scheduled for the weekend.
