It All Goes Around

Well I'm starting to feel better, but unfortunately everyone else in the house seems to be on the edge. All three kids have sinus gunk...our weather changes up and down as fall arrives creating colds galore. Tamara seems to be sleeping crappy not helping her out much. I can gladly say I look forward to it being Friday tomorrow.

Happily our weekend has a couple things but definitely not a packed one. So once again not a lot of words for ya...hint want to share some of yours? Send it on in.

Enjoy the smallish update as per usual Ze took the brunt of the work. I hope over the next couple of weeks to cleanup our Grunt's List.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Daisy, Daisy.

First, it's Rosh Hashanah - so for all our Jewish readers - L'Shana Tovah - Happy New Year.

Tomorrow is also the Christian (minor) feast of St Michael and All Angels. Known as Michaelmas. Which is pronounced here as Mikklemuss. There's a scruffy, leggy plant with small light purple flowers, that springs into bloom at the end of September and consequently is known as the Michaelmas Daisy.

You don't see it as much now as you used to, it's not popular in gardens now. Not fashionable. But I love that bloody plant!! When I was a kid it was everywhere. Gardens all over the country had it. It grew in cracks in the concrete in from of inner-city terraced houses. It grew in the slum where I grew up. It grew on the cleared bomb-sites.

Yes, when I was very small London still had areas where WW2 bombs had fallen and destroyed whole streets, the sites had been cleared of rubble but not yet built on. Largest of these was, of course, the site that is now the (extremely expensive) residential, commercial, and arts complex known as The Barbican.

I'm quite fond of the Barbican. I actually like the architecture. And I love the theatre there. I've seen productions of Shakespeare's plays there with some pretty famous cast members. Kenneth Branagh (Henry V); Patrick Stewart (before ST:NG) in many different roles; Judi Dench (pre-Damehood). Josette Simon (OK - she's only really famous to Blake's 7 fans but I like her *g*).

It's one of the few things I miss about London. Along with The ENO, all-night buses (they stop running here in the sticks at 23.30 - earlier in the villages), the British Museum, and Leadenhall Market. And being able to buy ackee. You can't get them here.

I love the area where I now live. I love being so close to "the country", too the moors. I wouldn't live in London again if you paid me, but I do miss some things about it, sometimes.

Enjoy your updates, Good night and may your God/s go with you.

No words

Not much to say tonight I'm afraid. It's late. I've had a (physically) hard day. I'm tired. And my brain shut down two hours ago. So I can't think of anything even remotely interesting to say.

No words come to me. Which is a sorry state for a writer to be in.

Traffic is not my friend.

Today was the first rehearsal for the Christmas play Cal is going to be in. Unfortunately rehearsal is in Bellevue. We live in Shoreline. By miles Bellevue isn't that far. Unfortunately driving to Bellevue during rush hour traffic makes the trip hellish. I refused to do that trip three times a week so he'll only get rehearsal in twice a week when he's with me.

Monday's rehearsal I drop him off at Mike's. Then Mike drives him back to Shoreline. I left the house today at 3:30. I dropped Cal off around 4:10. I made it back home by 5. Ick. That did allow me to come home and make dinner, however.

Wednesday I'll drive him to rehearsal and hang out for the couple of hours he's there. Our drive back around 6:30 will be much nicer. That day everyone will have to deal with leftovers for dinner.

This will be my routine every other week until December. I'm not looking forward to it.

Reminder

Life is short and it changes on a dime. Today was my reminder. Dizzy, hence not feeling well once again. That sucks. But one can only hope tomorrow is better. Live life, as you never know what the next day will bring.

Small update, plenty of time to get out and live.

More True Life Tales of Alternative Lifestyles

Another Weekend Ahead

We had planned on being kid free, but due to circumstances we will get Cal for much of the day tomorrow. The rest of the weekend is unplanned so far. I think Tamara like myself has to do bills, but after that fun I am hoping we can take some time for us somewhere along the path.

Got any great words, plans for fun stories to share? Send them on.

Enjoy your updates.

Allotment Goodies...

Friday is the equinox, so for our pagan or wiccan readers - we wish you a good Mabon here in the north or a good Ostara in the south.

Much better weather today - a perfect Autumn day. Blue sky, a few clouds, mostly sunshine, warm but not too warm, with a gentle breeze.

Picked some nice tomatoes from the allotment. And some curly greens (kale), though they're suffering a bit from white-fly at the moment. Need to find an organic spray for them. Loads of beans all-of-a-sudden. And we've started digging up the spuds.

It would have been a perfect evening too, if only I hadn't fallen into a very large patch of very vicious brambles. I have scratches where nobody should have scratches!! My own daft fault - I slipped off a ladder (only a little way - nothing dangerous, I wasn't very high - just a couple of rungs) because I leant too far sideways whilst picking some cooking apples from my sister's neighbour's tree. They don't use them so they let us pick them. They don't pick their blackberries either which is why their brambles have got big and vicious. I may have to pay them (the brambles, not the neighbours) a visit with my bill-hook!!

Blackberry and apple crumble for tea tomorrow. Excellent!! No, I'm not cooking. The kid is. I'll wash-up. I can do that - mostly - I do break the odd plate or cup but that's a hell of a lot less dangerous than setting fire to the kitchen!!

Enjoy your updates. See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Sport

Nothing can give you an ulcer quite as quickly as being a sports fan.

First there was ESPN - a channel I pay extra to receive - showing three out of the four preliminary finals of the AFL (Aussie Rules). Which one didn't they show?? The one with my team of course. Grr.

Then my team were beaten in their semi - by three points - just three lousy points!!

The England rugby team are doing a little better in the World Cup - currently being played in beautiful New Zealand. (God I loved it there - wish I could afford to go back - fantastic country, brilliant scenery, great people. Go if you ever get a chance). They've won their pool games so far. Not brilliantly mind and not playing particularly well, but at least they've won them.

The local rugby team is doing well too - (Oggy, oggy, oggy - Chiefs, Chiefs, Chiefs!!) Having (astonishingly) beaten both the Tigers and the Sarries before losing their third game and so being almost top of the table. Perhaps not so astonishing when you consider how many of both those teams' players are currently on duty in the World Cup.

The one that's really making me foam at the mouth though is my football team (soccer to you heathens) - who are scoring a nice lot of goals - unfortunately they're managing to score them for the opposing side!! We've lost two games so far this season (of 5 played) because we scored for our opponents (and lost a third because we were totally humiliated by a team in magnificent form - but we won't speak of that).

The manager (coach) is in trouble; it's our worst start to a season since he joined us, and the board have just announced that they have full confidence in him and there are absolutely no plans to sack him. In football that generally means start packing mate, you'll be gone by Christmas.

I hope they don't sack him - I don't think we'll find anybody better.

In other news - I'm cold and fed up. This morning was warm and humid so I wore a short-sleeved polo shirt to work and didn't bother with a jumper (sweater). This evening it absolutely chucked it down for two hours and turned proper chilli. I got soaked. Then had to stand at the bus stop in the wind and rain for ages as the bus was late. Consequently by the time I got hope I was freezing, soaked and dead grumpy. It is September. I will not put the heating on in September!!

Ah well - soon be Christmas *g*

Quiet

Our house is that right now. No kiddos this week and I already miss them. The boys we get to see after school for a short bit, but other than that the evenings are quiet. Tomorrow I have a parent night at my daughter;s school (I hate these things) and will be home late.

The rest of the week is not really filled. We will see what comes up.

Happy Reading.

The End of Summer

Today is the first day I can say it really feels like summer has slipped by. The cool fall air with slight breeze is definitely here. Rain is forecasted as well. I am ready. We got our wood (couple of cords) and await cranking up the stove. Cleaned up the back area put some stuff away as the sun and fun are most likely gone for a bit.

I am saddened though that the clothes drying line will be stored for another year. I do like my clothes line dried outside. They smell so great from the sun and slight breezes drying them.

Tomorrow is haircut day for Tamara, my daughter and myself. That will be nice, I think I let mine go a little longer than I like this time around. And then we take the boys to their dad's place. Another week with no kids, nice to have time with Tamara and yet we both miss our kids badly.

Enough of my rambling about. Enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health, and Happiness.

School!

Cal, Duncan and I just finished our first week of school. I don't know about those two but I'm pooped. Not that I miss Summer break. I'm happy to be back at work. It's always good to see everyone again and get back into Fircrest School groove.

Cal is really pumped about this year because he's one of the student crossing guards (Patrol). He gets to wear a nifty reflective vest (reflective raincoat during wet days) and a whistle. I hope the power of the Stop flag doesn't go to his head.

Duncan is entering his second year of high school with as much enthusiasm as he did the first. If we can get him through all of his classes with decent grades I'll be happy.

Here's hoping your week was good and the weekend ahead will be restful.

You Don't Know...

What you don't know.

My post of yesterday was a good example of this - and ties in nicely with what I was going to ramble about this evening.

I had two or three emails asking what conkers were. I'd guessed that, since the game of conkers is a very British thing and few other countries play it, (the list of "World" Champions is, with very few exceptions, made up of British winners), that most of my readers wouldn't know the game. But it never occurred to me that they wouldn't know what a conker is. The horse-chestnut tree is pretty common across Europe, I didn't give a thought to whether it grew elsewhere.

I should know better than to assume stuff like that. I always get my stories checked over if they contain non-British settings, characters, language. or customs. Just in case. Because although I know most of the obvious things which are different, I don't know the less obvious. And I don't know that I don't know these things. Just like I didn't know that there aren't any conkers in North America.

And that was what I was going to ramble about. The thing known as Brit-picking. (Or Ameri-picking for US fandoms). This is where, if you aren't a native of the country your story is set in, you get a native of that country to check it. Then you don't have your characters doing impossible things.

The story that prompted this ramble was a Dr Who fanfic. It was a very good story. I was totally caught up in the plot. Until it reached a crucial point - and gave me a "huh??" moment. It had Rose, in London, in the 20th century, fall from a wall into a patch of poison ivy.

US Americans are probably thinking, "So??". Because poison ivy is incredibly common throughout North America and it wouldn't even register with them. But it's one of those what you don't know things. Because there is no poison ivy (or poison oak) anywhere in Europe. We just don't have it. It's a North American plant that fortunately hasn't been brought here (unlike that blasted knot-weed!!).

Little things like that throw you out of a story briefly. It wasn't the writer's fault. But a Brit-picker would have spotted it at once and suggested an alternative.

It's the sort of thing that I wouldn't dream of ranting about of course, simply because it isn't well-known or obvious to a non-native. Not like the way I ranted (in my own blog) when a different writer had Rose rushing home to celebrate July 4th!! There's no excuse for not stopping and thinking about that one!!

So - for the fanfiction writers out there, to save poor readers from WTF moments and help you do you research (you can't over-emphasise the importance of research) - the LJ Brit-picking site and the US American version - "Drop the U".

And on that note I'll let you get on with reading your updates. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Gales and Conkers

Summer is definitely over, (although it isn't officially autumn for another ten days), the house martins have finally followed the swifts and the swallows and left for Africa. They're always first to arrive and last to leave.

The tail-end of hurricane Katia arrived. Of course by the time it reached us it was no longer a hurricane - just a rather nasty gale. It did a quite a bit of damage in Scotland and the north of England but wasn't too bad down here.

When the gales hit here we were immediately ordered down from the scaffolding. Even though I don't have a problem with heights I was rather glad I was at ground level at the time. The two lads who were on the scaffolding were more than a trifle shaken and looked rather pale and extremely relieved to be down.

I don't think I've seen scaffolding rock like that since the (real) hurricane of 1987.

The high winds brought a hell of a lot of conkers down too. And since we couldn't work this afternoon - well - no prizes for guessing how we spent the time.

My conker was a sixer before it finally broke.

But boy do my knuckles hurt. I'd forgotten just have painful a crack on the hand from a flying conker can be.

End of an (Increasingly Femslashy) Era - "All My Children"

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2011/09/23/end-of-an-increasingly-femslashy-era--all-my-children

Two weeks ago we talked about femslash from Harry Potter, in the wake of the conclusion of seven books AND eight movies. Tonight we move on to a different kind of ending, the involuntary kind. For five decades the ABC daytime drama "All My Children" ran five days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, with some of the most recognizable actors in soap operas. It tackled important, controversial social issues when few others would - abortion, HIV, transgender, etc. Perhaps the most well-known example of this was when Bianca Montgomery, cherished daughter of central character Erica Kane, came out of the closet to her mother. Since then Bianca went on to have a slew of relationships with other women - Frankie, Lena, Maggie, Reese, and so on - all of which seemed to end in heartbreak. Now that fans have started to fall in love with the newest pairing of Bianca and Marissa, however, ABC announced that All My Children would be cancelled in favor of more reality programming. Granted, it's going to have a second life on the Internet, but it's too early to know what kind of changes we're going to see. In light of the fact that AMC is about to air its last episode on commercial television ever, we're spending the show talking about not only the history of Bianca's love life on AMC, but also our reactions to the cancellation and our fondest and least-favorite memories from the show. I'll be joined once again by Dreiser, as well as fellow fans Jetgirl and past guest QQSuited.

Slow

Today seemed like it dragged by. Kind of a solemn day. A remembrance of those lives lost on 9-11, and yet I want to include all those other lives that have been lost to this selfish act and the innocents who have been killed along the way.

I know Peace is a far fetched crazy idea for so many reasons and so many people, but wouldn't be nice?

On to the next day we go. May this day bring even a glimmer of Peace and throw in Health and Happiness for good measure.

Ramble from Joan

Joan heard our cry for rambles and answered. Yay!
"Being dead takes getting used to." 1)

But then, I'm not dead. I'm worse -- undead.

I don't exist at all. Because... I no longer have a FaceBook account.

I can see the horror in your faces. I can see the question begin to take shape, "How on earth could that happen?"

No, I didn't post the picture of a nude person (which I know to be deadly sin). I did not insult any politician or religious leader. Not even Mr Zuckerberg, much as I have sometimes wanted to. Instead, I clicked on "Delete Account" (or some such) and vanished from the face of the world.

FaceBook was not sorry to see me go; there's still a gazillion of happy users there, most of whom are friends with most of the others.
With one mouseclick I sank into oblivion, or, as a Bhuddist might call it, nirvana. No longer am I treated to the rollercoaster ride of unanounced interface changes I was unable to make sense of, no longer do I walk the perilious maze of security settings with my heart racing.

It's calm out here, "floating in a most peculiar way". 2)

That's not to say that I have gone offline entirely. But, you see, I am a rather private person, despite my rambling here. There are things I want to share with my family, but not with my friends. I do have dirty little secrets, like (you won't tell on me, will you?) reading online lesfic, which I would rather not have my mother know, but want to share with like-minded felons. I much prefer to, ahem, 'circulate' information where I deem it appropriate.

So: Goodbye, FaceBook! I would like to say that it's been wonderful, but instead I'll just say thanks -- thanks, no.

Joan

Quotes from 1) lil' ol' me and 2) Bob Dylan.

Darn it. I'll miss Joan's picture posts. She has a wonderful eye and I love seeing photos of other countries. As for posts that are too personal...I don't post anything on Facebook I wouldn't want my mother to see (or for that matter, several aunts, an uncle, and a few cousins). But I do subscribe to the belief that there are some things you just shouldn't share on Facebook. Mostly on Facebook I play games. I post pictures of things we do. I share various liberal articles. And occasionally I blabber on about something random. Never anything my mother would be shocked to read. At least I don't think she's ever been shocked....

Dear Weather/Mother Nature

It's not Autumn yet damnit!! Please stop the mists and mellow fruitfulness stuff. Please also stop the raining, gale-force winds, and cold. Could we please have one of those bursts of late-summer sunshine which September is usually famous for?? It's like November out there and it's no fun. It makes it very difficult to work.

And especially could you please stop the sudden over-abundance of large, stripy, spiders, and their webs stretching across every conceivable gap between two grass-stalks?? It's making it impossible for me to walk from one side of the site to the other without looking like an advert for the Ministry of Silly Walks. Or a drunk on a dance-floor trying to do Y.M.C.A. while everybody else is doing The Time-Warp.

Thank you.

I hope everybody in Texas stays safe. And anywhere else where flood, rain, wind, fire (or for that matter the evil actions of humanity) are threatening life and livelihood.

See you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Announcement From Bedazzled Ink
We love everything about Khimairal Ink, except the time we can no longer afford to take to get out regular issues. So we've decided to put do occasional issues with defined reading periods so writers will know when to submit to us. We're also going to have calls for submissions to special issues—very special issues for those who enjoy creating in ways other than words. This has not been an easy decision for us, but is the best one to make at this time. As an added bonus, we're putting this September issue out in pdf, mobi, and epub formats so you can read it on your ereader of choice. Thank you for your support through the years. We'll be back. Looking Back Sans Time-Turner - Harry Potter Femslash

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2011/09/07/looking-back-sans-time-turner--harry-potter-femslash

In tonight's episode we will not be looking at a specific author or discussing a certain body of fanfic work. By now many of you have seen "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2", which marked the end of a series of seven novels and eight movies that we've followed for years and years. Now that it's over, it may be time to take a look back at the entire canonical and subtextual Harry Potter universe. I'll be joined by past guests HP fanfic writers Dreiser and D. Geheimnis, as well as first-timer and fellow author Demoka, and we'll discuss everything related to femslash and Harry Potter, from major female characters such as Hermione, Ginny, Luna, and Fleur, to what kind of subtext actually exists, to the persistent populary of the darker, incestuous world of the Lestrange sisters.

Saturday Summer

Everyone packed into the minivan this morning on the hunt for swap meets. I had a list of them to check out that I got off the web. Sadly only one out of 4 and even that was mostly antiques not junk. We wanted junk. Oh well, anyone have knowledge of good swap meets locally available to Seattle please let us know.

Now on to an announcement that I sadly spaced on earlier.

We're delighted to be here, in our fifth year, with a new and stunningly beautiful volume of Read These Lips. As with previous volumes, we feel lucky to be able to receive and present more lesbian stories each year and with such variety. In Take 5, we welcome the entertaining and thought-provoking writings of Adrienne Fleming, Angel Propps, Deborah La Garbanza, Doreen Perrine, Elaine Burnes, Gill McKnight, Ina Bak, Joan Annsfire, J.E. Knowles, Lee Lynch, Natasha Carthew, Rachel Green, R.G. Emanuelle and Vanessa Stewart.

Take 5 is available as a free e-book from www.readtheselips.com

There you have it. Go check it out and now back to the update, enjoy!

Final Bit of Summer Fun

The past week it's been just me and the three kids. Correction. E took off work on Wednesday so we could go to the Evergreen State Fair. Duncan ended up staying home because he wouldn't get his butt out of bed. He had the house all to himself while the three of us and two of the kids' friends spent all day at the fair. Normally we probably would have stopped around 3 but the weather was with us (overcast and cool) so we stuck it out until 5:30. After dropping kids off we made it home by 7:30.

Thursday I took all three kids to the Lynnwood Recreation Center to check out their spiffy new pool. It was very cool and if you live in the area, do yourself a favor and go during their open swim time.

Today we took it easy and got out to pick up my comics. Cal is really the only kid interested in that but I bribed everyone with lunch at Taco Time. After we got home I puttered and the kids did their own thing. Tonight we're going to see Super 8 at the cheap theater near our house. They also have the best popcorn of any chain in town.

Light night for reading. Hopefully there will be more tomorrow.

So here in the US we have long week coming up and I am very happy about that. We have the kids all weekend, not sure we have big plans but it doesn't matter. One work day and then some rest.

Sorry my words are not nearly as much fun to read as Ze's. But then I let Tamara do most of the cooking.

So enjoy your updates.
