Small Update

This being Friday (not soon enough) and a small update I'll take the opportunity to wish you all a great weekend. This one for me should be about a few hours of leaf gathering and the rest being a slug, hoping to feel a lot better.

Enjoy your updates!

Trip Report

The trip to Olympia went well. Max loved the beach. The kids found a bunch of keen shells. I visited a totally cool comic shop in Lacey (Olympic Cards & Comics). The only bad parts were me forgetting to charge the good mattress inflater and E catching a nasty cold. Little e's grandpa's mattress inflater didn't work so well. This caused Duncan to abandon his mattress and move to the couch. Unfortunately there wasn't another couch available in the room we were all in and E spent the night with her butt on the floor...the cold slate floor. As a result her cold was much worse the next morning and I made the executive decision that we would leave that day instead of spending another night. It actually worked out much better that way. The kids still got to do their beach combing because we left around 6 pm to avoid rush hour traffic in Seattle. We made it home by 8:30, ready to sleep in our own beds. Tuesday we rested and were fresh for work and school on Wednesday. Damn but I love three day work weeks.

Shopping

I hate it. Something you have to do though, isn't it. Well, it is if you want to eat. I like to eat so I guess I have to shop. It was my turn today. Working on the wrong side of town this week so I couldn't go to one of my preferred supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Lidl or the Co-op). Had to go to Tesco. I hate Tesco. I can never find anything. True to form I had trouble. Found petfood with no problem but it turns out that Tesco don't stock the kid's favourite brand. Personally I reckon her cats will eat anything if they're hungry enough but still... I managed to find the second choice. Found the coffee. They don't stock my favourite brand. They don't stock my second favourite brand. I bought the smallest size I could get of the brand they did stock. I'll have to make a separate trip to Sainsbury's later in the week.

Then I realised that I'd forgotten to buy veggies - which are of course right by the entrance. I eventually managed to make the trolley (wonky-wheel of course) go in the direction I wanted not the direction it wanted and headed back. No red onions. There seemed to be a theme developing here. Ok - second choice - brown onions. No green apples. Sod it - I'm not buying red ones!! Then a cabbage. The list said a nice, solid, round one, big as a bowling ball - not a wimpy bunch of greens. I picked up a couple to see how solid they were. The trolley - spotting its chance - made a bid for freedom. I grabbed for it. I had to let go of the cabbages.

Did you know that cabbages bounce??

A toddler, seeing one bounce towards him shouted "football" and gave it a hefty kick. He hurt his foot and started screaming. It was a good shot though. The cabbage flew quite a distance. Eventually a nice stack of this week's special offer - 12-packs of toilet rolls - stopped it. You know how when you drop a cup of coffee there's at least ten times as much coffee on the floor as could possibly fit in the mug?? Well toilet rolls have a similar reaction. It took three assistants a good ten minutes to pick them up. If I'd been fragile I could have been really wounded by the looks they were giving me. I decided that I didn't want a cabbage after all. Especially since the toddler was still screaming. I swung the trolley round to head for the checkout. The wonky wheel bit again. I went left. It went right. The bananas went flying.

You can't slip on a banana skin. Honest you can't. It just isn't possible. You can, however, slip on banana flesh that has been squeezed out of its skin by a trolley wheel running over it.

The duty manager looked up at me from his position on the floor as he wiped banana from his rather nice suit. "You are leaving now, aren't you sir??" He said, it wasn't really a question. It sounded more like a threat. I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and telling him that I wasn't a sir, since I'm female, probably wouldn't be good for my health. He opened a fresh checkout especially for me.

I don't think I'll be shopping there again. I really don't like Tesco anyway.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day (or Veterans Day as Americans know it). Ninety years ago today the guns stopped firing and the "war to ends all wars" was over. One quarter of the adult male population of Europe (and the British Empire countries) were casualties. Shame we didn't learn from it and did it all over again a generation later. And we keep doing it.

Here's a glass raised in thanks to the memory of those who fought and died for us. And a hope that those who are out there somewhere, still doing so, will return home safely.

When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.

Future and Announcements

Tonight I'm hyping the concept of helping another. Lara Zielinsky is an author we check daily and on her web site she talks about her son's opportunity of a lifetime. However, to take advantage of it he needs to raise a substantial amount of money. If you're able, I believe this is a worthy cause. Our future is our kids and having them educated globally is the best for everyone. This is a chance of the lifetime one should not miss.

Take the time to check out his site and what he's trying to accomplish. I do want folks to know in no way has Lara asked me to promote this, but I felt it was a spectacular opportunity with a well thought out goal and one that shouldn't be missed over the issue of money.

Thanks for reading, now back to your updates. Enjoy!

Vacation Ahead!

E and I have been busy today. Not only do we have the Rainbow Families swim party (3 hours!) but tomorrow morning we're taking all of the kids and the dog to Olympia. We've got plenty of lists but I'm sure we'll still forget something.

After this update I'm off to round up clothes for me. The kids are packed and I believe I've rounded up enough bedding for all of us. Thank goodness for inflatable mattresses. Max is certainly going to love the opportunity to run on the beach and smell all those new things.

Why do I get the feeling that after our little vacation we'll be more tired than when we left?

Rain Rain Rain

Lovin' it! The dark gray wet days are definitely for people like me. Big weekend ahead for our family. Very busy, but at least these are things we choose to do.

Saturday is another Rainbow Families event, this time swimming. Sunday, Tamara and I pack the minivan up with kids and dog and head down to grandpa's just outside of Olympia on Puget Sound. We will be down there until Tuesday and then home again.

Enough of my ramblings, onto the updates with one added note. New site added Rymellan Stories by Sarah Ettritch, let her know what you think.

Enjoy.

Wet and Cold

The rains have finally hit. We're supposed to have them for the next four days...no sun breaks, no warmth, just cold and rain. I've been told this is typical weather for this time of year and we've been lucky with unseasonably warm days for the past few months. Ah well...it was nice while it lasted. Now where's that sun lamp....

Bonfires

No - I'm not setting fire to all those voters who still think that some people are more equal than others and that it's ok to deny a whole bunch of law-abiding citizens their civil rights. No - it's Guy Fawkes Night also known as Bonfire Night or Firework night. Although these days it seems to be more like Firework Month.

Yep it's that day where across the UK (and most of the still heavily-British ex-Empire countries like Oz and NZ) we shiver in the pouring rain, standing around a large (but inadequate for the purposes of keeping warm) bonfire while watching fireworks. And then of course we consume the traditional GFN food. Potatoes baked-in-their-jackets (in theory cooked in the embers of the bonfire - in practice nuked), sausages (in my case vegetarian, imitation sausages) and either baked beans or tomato soup. Or some folks just call in at the chippie for a fish supper on the way home, if they've been to a big display.

Of course these days most people don't give a monkey's who Guy Fawkes was, or why we burn him in effigy (a figure, made of crumpled-up newspapers stuffed into old clothes and wearing a mask designed to look vaguely like a gentleman of the Stuart period - pointy beard etc., is set on top of the bonfire). Or, in my case (raised Catholic), whether we should celebrate the destruction of a Catholic liberation group by an unjust protestant dictatorship. *g*. We all learn the history of The Gunpowder Plot at school - but like most school things it's forgotten the moment we leave. No, we don't care about all that. We just like the fireworks.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder-treason and plot, I don't see why gunpowder-treason should ever be forgot.

Happy Guy Fawkes Night.

Vote, vote, vote

It's not my country, it's not my election, but what the USA does affects the whole world. It's late here but I'm pretty sure it's not too late in most of the USA and I'm positive that those on the west coast of the USA have plenty of time still. So get out there and vote. Please. You can make a difference. I know who I'd prefer you choose - but as I said - it's not my country.

What I would like to ask you all - and it is important - and since you're reading this site and the fics we list you must, at least, be gay friendly - if you live in California a "no" on prop 8 would be nice, if you live in Connecticut a "no" on prop 1 would also be good. And in Florida a "no" on prop 2 would be great too. Those propositions are an attempt to do the untenable. They are designed to amend state constitutions to deny one group of people their rights. No amendment has ever limited rights and freedoms. Gay people aren't asking for special treatment. All they want is to be treated exactly the same as any other person. Equal treatment. Equal rights. I'm damned lucky I live in a country where these things exist. It would be nice to see a country that was founded on the principles of freedom and equality for all give those things to all it's citizens. Thank you

Now - before you start reading tonight's offerings - go vote. Then you can sit and read with a clear conscience.

Hope

Today is my daughter's 8th birthday. Eight years ago today one of the best things in my life occurred. Unhappily a few days later we (Americans) voted in a new government that would change our country and the world for years to come. To say the darkness fell seems fitting.

For my daughter's entire life our government has headed in a direction that no society should follow. However, today brings Hope. Tomorrow could bring a new day for us all. One in which I Hope and believe many Americans will head to the polls to elect a new government.

One that gives Hope for the future. One that sees Rights for all. One that brings Dignity and Honor back to our country. Where leaders view our planet and everything on it as something that matters. Step into the future.

Ze does the update tomorrow and I'm not sure if she will say it, but I will, all you Americans VOTE and be heard. It does count. We cannot afford another 4 years.

So, today is about Hope. Let us all find it somewhere. Let there be Peace.

Enjoy your updates.

Clean Floors

E's already reported on the state of the floors. They're all done except for the bathroom in the master bedroom. That one will either be done tonight or next weekend. Since it's also where the litterbox resides, it's a little trickier.

Tonight we've got a skating party for little e. Her birthday is tomorrow and today is the official party for all of her friends. Now E just needs to figure out how many Costco pizzas she needs to order. I suggested eight but she's skeptical.

Happy Saturday

We survived the fun of Halloween so back to chore day for us. Tamara actually mopped the floors, wow is it ever nice having her here. One note...Jane's World sadly is now by registration only at comics.com, hence we will not be updating it daily, only once a week from the strip Paige Braddock posts at AfterEllen.

Other than that, enjoy your updates. Reminder...if tonight doesn'tt have enough for you all to read, step back to last night's craziness.
