Quiet

Last night's concert with Brandi Carlile was great. She does an awesome show and if you get the chance it is highly recommended you not miss her. I do love the Zoo Tunes venue being outside because it allows me not to overdo it. Next year Tamara and I will attempt to spend more money and see a few more shows.

Today we took Tamara's mom to the airport as she headed home to Oklahoma and then we dropped off the boys at their dads place. Got home to silence, it seemed a bit odd.

Enough of my rambling, enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

My words are short because E and I are off to see Brandi Carlile at the Woodland Park Zoo. I'll let you get to reading.

Sunny Day

We are one day closer to the weekend. That is the best thing I can say about this week. Our sun has returned and summer can try and get kick started. Unlike the rest of the country we have been a bit chilly and I am enjoying the mid 70s that have finally arrived. I certainly do not need anything more.

Now back to your updates, enjoy!

LJ Woes.

Bit short on updates for you tonight folks - live journal isn't co-operating. According to a couple of sites it's a DDOS attack. But it only seems to be a problem on Firefox, Seamonkey doesn't seem to be having the same issues. (Don't know whether Opera is having issues too - I had that on the laptop but the kid doesn't have it on the PC).

Unfortunately I don't have all the links stored on Seamonkey on the PC, that I usually check.

So - if you use Firefox and you are having trouble getting a response from any of our links, the page won't load, or you get a blank page, try another browser.

I'll see you next week. Keep safe. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Lost souls

The events of the past week don't really lend themselves to a cheery little ramble for tonight.

A right-wing religious-fundamentalist fanatic completely ignores, (as religious fanatics tend to), the sixth commandment of the faith they claim to follow, and butchers a whole lot of kids. And I really don't get that. (Not that I understand religious fanatics anyway, or people who think that killing is an acceptable form of political dissent). But why kids?? Kids aren't government. Kids aren't a political party. Kids aren't an enemy. Why target kids?? What possible quarrel could anybody have with a bunch of kids at a summer camp??

Then there are a half-dozen or so incidents in the USA where heat-waves, ready availability of weapons, and a complete lack of rational thought, all come together, leaving a couple of people dead and several more people injured.

And an incredibly talented but deeply troubled young woman, battling addictions, hampered by mental health issues, and seemingly incapable of being helped, or prevented from throwing her life away, died far too soon.

A sad week all round.

Summer in Seattle?

Our extremely cool and wet for July weather continues. My mother spends half her time wrapped up in a blanket. I'm not going to complain one bit though. I'd rather it be like this than be in the triple digits. Those of you in the heatwave zone, stay safe and keep cool.

Here It Comes

Vacation ends and the routine of life starts up again. Bummer, but hey at least I am employed, so not too much whining.

Sunshine arrived just in time, today hit 81 and we've got those fans working right now.

Back to the regularly scheduled programming. Enjoy your updates!

Vacation Continues

The boys are at their Dad's for the day to attend a wedding. As a result our day has been incredibly quiet. Tomorrow we don't have too much planned beyond going to the Ballard Farmers Market and taking little e to her other mom's house.

E must return to work Monday. That will leave me, Mom and the boys to our own devices and a week light on touristy stuff and heavy on shopping.

Sunshine

Most of the day has been filled with it, we even made it into the 70s. While most of the USA is on heat hell we have been having overcast cool comfortable weather. I am sure many Seattlelites are not pleased with it, but I would prefer this to hellacious heat. I am oddly enough looking forward to some summer weather and here is hoping that August has it.

Our vacation day today was a bit more relaxed. We cruised to Archie Mcphee and drove by the Fremont Troll but other than that all was calm.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Peace, Health and Happiness. Let's find it, use it, and enjoy!

Take it away, Allaine....
Warehouse 13 -Lucky # for Authors Athena Mou & purrpickle?

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2011/07/22/warehouse-13--lucky-for-authors-athena-mou-purrpickle

Having spent the last show discussing one of the biggest femslash fandoms on the Internet today, this week F4F dials it down a notch and looks at a smaller fandom for a hit show on a smaller network. We'll be talking about the original sci-fi drama "Warehouse 13", which just began its 3rd season as the latest in a long line of high-rated and highly-regarded Syfy original series like "Battlestar Galactica", and "Stargate: Atlantis" (also a topic on this show). "Warehouse 13" deals with a top-secret facility that stores artifacts with fantastic and/or dangerous powers, and the agents tasked with the job of locating them. Specifically we'll focus on the subtextual pairing of Warehouse 13 agent Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and tragic heroine-turned-villainess Helena "H.G." Wells (Jaime Murray). Neither the fact that H.G. only appeared in one-half of Season 2, nor that she was a grief-maddened mother trapped in a century that wasn't hers, nor that she tried to use the Minoan Trident to start a new Ice Age, seems to have prevented the Myka/Helena pairing from gaining a dedicated following in the femslash community. Probably it didn't hurt that Helena put an end to her suicidal quest for Armageddon because she couldn't bring herself to kill Myka. Or that apparently we haven't seen the last of H.G. I'll be joined by two authors--Athena Mou, who has probably written more Myka/Helena fanfic than anyone, including the "Changing of the Seasons" series, and purrpickle, author of fics like "Helena in Beautiful, Flowing Cursive". My cohost will be past guest and herself a Myka/Helena author, Erin Griffin.

Sincerely, Allaine

My apologies to Allaine who sent this to me the first week of July. I was going to post it sooner but mom's visit threw me off. Another week and I'll once again have my computer back and hopefully won't space on any more announcements.

Softly she was going up, And a star or two beside

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed."

Yep, it's that time of year again. The anniversary of the first moon landing. And yep, just as always, I'm thinking back on it and marvelling. I'm still filled with wonder that when I look into the sky I can say, "A human being walked on that moon. Someone from this planet set foot on another world".

I hope I never lose that feeling of awe.

Of course I can't actually see the moon tonight. There's about a 10km-thick layer of cloud between us and it. And it's raining. Heavily. It's been raining now for almost a fortnight. I know I said we really needed it but blimey!! Some break in the clouds would be nice.

So, have you been practising?? Football. Played with the feet. Not soccer - football.

Hah!! Bet you thought I'd forgotten, didn't you?? (Actually I had, but I was checking back to see what I had and hadn't listed last week and I spotted the line that said I'd be testing you.)

Saturday is the birthday of Ras (Duke) Tafari Makonnen, The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. Revered as the messiah by the Jamaican movement taken from his title and first name - Rastafarian. If we have any Rasta readers - have a good celebration.

Enjoy your updates, see you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

RIP The Electric Quill

My laptop died!! (sob). The misfortune was prevented from becoming a tragedy though. A good friend who knows computers made some suggestions which enabled me to recover my data. Which was brilliant because I hadn't backed up my files for for over four months. There were 12,000 words at stake!!

It really is dead-as-a-doornail now though. (Strange phrase that. Can a doornail be considered to be "dead" since it was never actually alive?? And if it can, then how did it die?? Blunt-force trauma??) The hard-drive is kaput. And the battery looks as though - if it didn't actually catch fire it sure as hell had a good try at it.

So I guess I'm shopping for a new laptop this weekend (preferably costing less than £300). I suppose it is about time. The old one had been teetering on the edge of doom for several years. And considering it was 8 or 9 years old, weighed 3kg, and had a 20GB hard-drive and 128MB of RAM, it really did need replacing.

But I'll miss it. I'd grown accustomed to its little quirks.

Time to play tourist....

Mom and the kids made it to Seattle in one piece. They didn't get in until around 8 last night. Today we've just taken it easy. We went to the grocery store and that's been the exciting part of our day. Tomorrow we'll start our week of fun stuff by going to the Burke Museum and the Museum of History Industry (MOHAI).

I'm sure you have plenty to read after yesterday's update. I'll let you get to it.

The weekend is near as well as FemslashCon. I believe we'll have some good sized updates for you all this weekend. After we update Saturday we pick up the boys and Tamara's mom for our summer to begin. Tomorrow marks my last day in office for a week, hence gonna be a busy one.

Vacation is on the horizon. I like that. Enjoy your update and get ready.

Football

Usual bits first. Tomorrow is Bastille day so we wish our French readers (and those of French ancestry who celebrate) a good one. Friday is Asalha Puja so a blessed one to our Theravada Buddhist readers.

There's a fair bit to read this evening - if your fandom is Grey's or Glee. Other than that the pickings are a trifle slim I'm afraid. I think E's right - people are holding back until this coming weekend's Femslash Con and International Day of Femslash.

Congrats to the US & Japan women's football teams for making it through to the World Cup final. Any chance that US Americans will now learn to call it by its proper name?? The name used by three-quarters of the world (though the Italians are awkward about it too, they call it calcio - "kick"). Oh and that goes for you Aussies too!! It's football. Not soccer - football. Say it with me... foot...ball... football. See, easy.

Soccer is just a nickname - from British public school slang (public school here is expensive, generally exclusive, private school - not state school). It comes from the name Association Football. Just as rugger was the nickname for Rugby Football.

I know you already use the name football for a different game (we used to call that Gridiron) - one in which you have an egg shape rather than a ball and use your hands rather than your feet - and I know that handegg doesn't sound half as much fun as football but still... .

Of course there's Aussie Rules Football (Carlton!! Yeah!!) and Gaelic Football (Waterford, naturally!!) too. But at least they do kick the ball a bit more.

Mind you - there's even such games as the Kirkwall Ba. Football before there was an offside rule... That type of football is where the name calcio originates of course.

Keep practising - football. I'll be testing you next week *g*

Enjoy your updates, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Hype (as E would say)

But first - a quick note. There was an update to the site yesterday. I have no idea why there wasn't an email to list members. Don't know if Tamara was so overjoyed at being back home with E that she forgot to post it, or if Yahoo screwed up again. Either way, by the time I got home and realised there was no post it was time to do my update and so not worth posting yesterday's. If you are on the yahoo mailing list and didn't get an update - just pop over to the webpage to see what yesterday's update was.

And now for tonight's updates - and ramble/hype/free book drawing from Rev over at Cocktail Hour.

This past Saturday afternoon, I had a gushing fan-girl episode. I couldn't help it, really. Jae agreed to be a guest on Cocktail Hour and I could barely keep myself together. If you're a fan of Jae's work and you haven't heard the podcast yet, I'd recommend it. Even if it weren't me rambling on about how great she is, I'd still recommend it. Andy barely got a chance to speak.

But here's another reason to listen: Jae has graciously agreed to a book give away. All you have to do is correctly answer one or two trivia questions taken from her books and hope I pick your name in the drawing. All the information you need to enter is located on the Cocktail Hour website and in the show notes on the podcast if you get your downloads via iTunes. Please don't post answers on the website or on our Facebook page. Only emailed answers will be accepted and the email address is on the website in the post for episode 21.

Jae will also be a panelist on the publishing (or maybe it's publishers?) panel at the 2011 Femslash Con! You can find more info about that at www.femslashcon.com! Oh! And if you're interested in the con, check out our Bar Rag # 14.

I hope you enjoy the show and best of luck on the drawing!

    Rev

The Happy Puppy

Today Tamara and I once again played it easy. Few chores mixed with lots of down time. Works great for me as I head back to work tomorrow.

Warning...we have a distinct feeling that a few of our sites and writers are holding back for the big Femslash Con on July 16th and 17th. With that in mind we will update as usual, but if there is a mass amount we may break it up over a few days.

Now back to your updates, enjoy!

Peace Health and Happiness.

Our Dangerous Lifestyle

E and I are still all by ourselves. Today we did a few chores off the list. We made a trip to my school to check on the critters. The aquatic frogs now have fresh water. The fish and toads are all fed.

We still need to make a grocery store run. My cleaning of the refrigerator resulted in some pitched lettuce. Other than that our evening will hold the excitement of watching a few more episodes of The Closer.

Have at it!

We have been taking it easy. Isn't that what staycation is all about? Saw Bridesmaids today. We laughed a lot. It may not be everyone's cup of tea...it is ours though.

Another day, another update. Enjoy.

Home

I made it back to Seattle yesterday. My day started in Oklahoma with a 5 am wake up (7 am flight). Due to time differences my plane landed at Sea/Tac by 10:00 am. Wacky. Needless to say I went to bed mighty early.

Today I'm being treated to rain and temperatures in the high 50s. This is in contrast to blazing sun and 100+ temps in Oklahoma. You'd think I'd be freezing my butt off but I'm sitting here typing this in jeans and a t-shirt. E, on the other hand, is all wrapped up in a hoodie. Hopefully the weather will move back into summertime temps before mom and the boys arrive in a little over a week.

It Rained. *does happy dance*

Started about 6pm and is still going. Thank God. We desperately need it. The ground is dust-dry for at least a spit. It cooled the air a bit. It was so close & muggy, which was not improving my mood at all. Now everything feels clean and fresh, and I'm much more chipper.

Got a cup of (instant) coffee lunchtime. An old boy, from one of the cottages nearby to where we're doing our slash-and-hack site clearance, brought out a tea-tray with coffee for us. Nice of him. He asked if we had time to do him a little favour. Muggins here said yes.

The favour turned out to be a continuation of the slash-and-hack. He had some brambles and ivy growing into his garden from the site and he wondered if I could clear them for him since I had the proper tools. (A machete, a bill-hook, and a sickle).

Those bloody brambles were taller than me!! In fact, when I'd hacked some of them down I could stand in under the rest as though they were a little hut!! And have I ever mentioned how much I hate ivy?? Bloody stuff gets roots everywhere.

It wasn't too bad though, took me about three-quarters of an hour to cut the lot down and shift the rubbish. I wasn't about to offer to dig the roots out though. I'd still be doing it a week come Michaelmas!!

I got a little gift for my trouble. They had a fruit garden with lots of gooseberry bushes and he picked me a couple of kilos while I was working. So now I have enough gooseberries for a good-sized crumble - if I can persuade somebody to make one for me. *g*. I haven't had gooseberry crumble for years.

Well, that's me done for another week. Have a good one folks. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Quiet Week.

Not a lot to say tonight.

I'm knackered. Did a 13-hour day at work today, got a 12 hour day tomorrow.

I've had a fairly uneventful week (touch wood). Managed to cut the grass without incident at the weekend. Did a bit of work on the allotment, similarly without incident. Haven't cut myself, broken any bones, rendered myself unconscious, or indeed injured myself, or anyone around me, in any way.

I haven't destroyed any equipment. Nor any greenhouses. Haven't ripped any clothing.

I did drop a saucer this evening though, while washing up after dinner.

I thought I'd put it on the draining-board properly but I hadn't; it slipped off and hit the floor. It shattered of course. Earthenware saucers don't tend to survive impacts with quarry-tile floors. But even that wasn't any great loss as it was only an odd one I used for bits of cake or the odd biscuit or two, and not part of a set.

Enjoy your updates - I'll try to be a bit more chatty tomorrow.

The Evolution of "Calzona" with BurningEden and Milk_and_Glass

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2011/07/08/the-evolution-of-calzona-with-burningeden-milkandglass

I have said that the summer of 2011 will be a season of "experimentation" for F4F Radio. Now that we're in our third year, I want to take a few hesitant steps in different directions to see what flies and what falls flat. In tonight's segment, we will not be discussing fan fiction per se, nor will we be discussing a brand-new fandom. Instead F4F will backtrack to the summer of 2009 and one of the first interviews ever held here. Thanks to the canon, but all-too-brief lesbian romance between Callie Torres and Erica Hahn on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy", the femslash fandom for that show had grown from "big" to "huge". So one night I invited the authors Milk_and_Glass and BurningEden onto my show to discuss GA, as well as Shonda Rhimes' other medical drama, "Private Practice". That interview became the most downloaded show in F4F history. Tonight F4F returns to the scene of the crime to talk to Milk_and_Glass and BurningEden once more. This time, however, instead of an interview I'm inviting them back to have a discussion about "Grey's" and the two years since our original talk. We'll discuss the evolution of the Callie/Arizona ("Calzona") pairing, culminating in a wedding late last season, as well as any noncanon relationships that have caught people's attention. We'll also talk once more about Callie/Erica, that pairing's viability in the fandom today, and if Calzona has taken its place in my guests' hearts.

Sincerely, Allaine

Thanks for the words. Hopefully you USA folks had a safe and fun 4th and the rest of you enjoyed the day! Have a great week.
