All Hallows Eve

Tonight is Hallowe'en. Which of course means that tomorrow is both All Saints' Day, so we wish our Christian readers a good one, and Samhain or Beltane (depending on whether you're north or south) and we wish our Pagan and Wiccan readers a blessed one.

Astonishingly we had no trick-or-treaters tonight. Not one. Just as well really since I forgot to buy chocs yesterday. All we had handy was a few packets of crisps and some clementines. I doubt they'd have gone over too well.

The weather was mostly to blame for the lack of small pests. It was raining rather heavily.

There's a fair old bit for you to read tonight so I won't keep you. Get reading!! Oh, just a word of warning in case you're not keen on that type of thing, most of the stories from The Royal Academy of Bards tonight are from their Hallowe'en special, so they're probably ghost stories or horror of some kind.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Storms.

Watching footage of the storm as it hits the Eastern USA. Bloody Ada. If I ever again complain about the amount of rain we're getting here, feel free to wallop me. Seriously though, it's unbelievable how much rain you folks have had.

I've read that it's possible that up to 40 people have died in the US (that's in addition to the estimates of between 40 & 60 who were killed while the storm was raging through Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Cuba, etc.) That's awful. It's sounds heartless of me to say that at least it's "only" 40 people. But it could have been much, much worse if the Federal and Local governments hadn't listened to the warnings, and made preparations.

I expect a fair few of our readers in those parts that have been worst hit are without power and so not able to read this, but for those of you who can, please stay safe. Do whatever the rescue services tell you to do.

Me?? I'm lucky. I'm sitting in a nice, cosy armchair, in a nice, safe, dry house, watching a football game and feeling completely wrung out. It was one hell of a cracking game though. Fantastic. Not seen a League Cup game like it. I feel like I ran every inch of the pitch with those lads though. Kicked every ball. What a great match.

And I'm laughing myself silly over all the plonkers who left before half-time.

Halloween

Halloween is almost upon us. Tomorrow night we're finally going to carve our pumpkins. Tonight I made some pumpkin pie ice cream for our school Halloween party. I admit I thought it would be a little weird. But it's actually quite good. I predict it will be a hit at the party.

Damn.

My words and, as usual, I'm fresh out of them. Let's see...what can I blab on about? Today my student was absent due to a dental appointment. It'll be nice to see him tomorrow.

I hate not having a student for the day. It makes time drag. I did manage to give many breaks and organize the art supplies area. Got my lunch kind of late though and I'm thinking I won't be eating dinner tonight because of that.

Okay, enough random stuff. Get to reading tonight's light update. Keeping my fingers crossed for more tomorrow.

bits & bobs

I'm late tonight. Went to a late-night showing at the cinema (I can only do this because I'm not getting up for work in the morning) so I won't be saying much.

UK readers - we go from "government time" to "God's time" this coming weekend - BST ends and we go back to GMT. I think the clocks go back in the rest of the EU too. (Though not yet those parts of the USA that do the clock thing. Or Canada). Summer time has already started in most of the countries in the southern hemisphere which do that.

Word of warning for IE users - The Royal Academy of Bards is asking that readers do not use IE to access the website.
Announcement from the Academy of Bards

    Friends,

We are aware that some of you are getting notices that the Academy of Bards has malware and some visitors are being warned against using the site. Most of the notices that we've seen have been on the What's New page. We have run many scans of our pages and have gotten no indication of a Trojan, though a company called Sophos has blocked us.

Meanwhile, we recommend that readers NOT use Internet Explorer. One of the notes we got was specifically targeting Internet Explorer. To the best of our knowledge, Firefox and Google Chrome have not encountered any errors. Apples seem to be immune.

If you have gotten a warning message, it would help us if you could forward the wording to us at academy_contact@yahoogroups.com - particularly the name of the malware/trojan/virus/exploit and the name of the browser you are using.

And now - take a bow Chloe Willis.

Who?? You're thinking (except Chloe of course - she knows who she is).

Chloe is one of our regular readers. And she's incredible. And generous.

And I thank you very much.

Enjoy your updates. Oh - the movie I saw?? Looper. Very violent (as expected) but a twist in the end that I did not expect at all. If you like violent action films I can recommend it. And the quote about God's time - from a book by one of my favourite Golden Age of Detective Fiction authors - Dorothy L Sayers.

See you next week guys - Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Restless

Today the doc at the hospital told me that my wrist is healing well, even though not as fast as I'd like, but I'll need at least another week off work. Apparently I don't heal as quickly as I used to.

That news annoyed me. Firstly because every minute I'm stuck here at home I'm losing money, and secondly because I'm bored. I'm keeping occupied reading, but there's only so many hours you can look at a screen before your eyes get tired. And it's still bloody raining. And I don't do the whole sitting-home-and-doing-nothing thing very well. I can do staying-at-home as long as I have things to do, but when I can't doing anything?? The results are not good.

I get very restless. And then I do stupid things. So far I'm resisting the urge to see if it's possible to abseil one-handed from my bedroom window using a co-ax cable. Or go white-water rafting on our flooded river. But it's a struggle.

According to my laptop I have played 734 games of patience (solitaire to speakers of American English - we don't call it that because this is solitaire to us). And I have "won" 108, which is a win percentage of 14.

Win is in inverted commas because you don't really "win", I prefer to think of it as "completed". It's not winning - it's sheer luck. And I swear that the 'puter deliberately creates games you can't complete. I can't think of any other reason for the fact that the first game of any new session is almost always a "loss", but one in which you come so very close to a "win".

And now you can see how bored I am - I'm building conspiracy theories around a computer-generated card game!!

More blogtalkradio fun from Allaine this week....
Not Your Typical Funnies - 'Go Get a Roomie's Chloe

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2012/10/26/not-your-typical-funnies--go-get-a-roomies-chloe

Having explored lesbian storylines in multiple forms of both writing (novels, fan fiction) and filmmaking (movies, webseries), for the first time F4F Radio looks at another fusion of the written word and the visual arts - the webcomic. Comic strips have been a part of newspapers for decades, but the Internet gave creative minds with a knack for both writing and graphic design to reach an audience without muscling onto the funny pages. This was especially important for people interested in pursuing adult, risque storylines and hitherto taboo topics such as homosexuality, transgender, and sexual fetishes. To varying degrees, tonight's guest has explored all three. "Go Get a Roomie", the webcomic created by the artist Chloe, follows the adventures of Roomie, an irresistible lesbian free spirit without a home of her own, and Lillian, the surprisingly indifferent girl with a penchant for narcolepsy and VERY vivid dreams who eventually shares friendship and an apartment with her. Surrounded by an equally oddball supporting cast, GGAR has become increasingly popular since it started a few years ago. Chloe has also created a wide, varied gallery of fanart, from Xena/Gabrielle to Harley/Ivy to the Kim Possible/Shego graphic novel "Anything's Possible". And we're going to talk with Chloe about all of it. Joining us will be cohost Rae D. Magdon, who also cohosted last month's show on "Dragon Age".

Pumpkins

We saw a lot of them today. The family (minus the sleeping teen) drove up to the pumpkin patches in the Snohomish valley area. This year we opted for a new one, Thomas Family Farms. It offered up some variation from our usual yearly visit to The Farm. The kids mined for gems, they went on a monster truck ride, shot paintballs and other activities. Of course there was another large corn maze. Yes we were lost long enough in there. So the day was filled with fun and mud. Sadly I forgot my camera, hence not a lot of pictures from this event.

Back to your updates. Hope your weekend is treating you well.

Trying New Fandoms

Well, not so much the whole fandom - just a writer or two.

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm stuck at home, getting bored and looking for stuff to keep me occupied. I ran out of new books to read, and I ran out of new fanfic in my fandoms. And although I love re-reading some of the stories in my fandoms sometimes I just want something new to read.

Well, I may be a fan of Star Trek TOS, and Next Gen, and I love DS9, and I have several (very much non-canon) 'ships in each of those, but I've never understood the appeal of Voyager. Woman-as-captain or no, I just could not get into the show. I could never see Kate Mulgrew as anything other than Mrs Colunbo. Nor could I get into any of the pairings. Absolutely no interest. I managed to read a kind of Xena Uber/Voyager crossover once but only because I liked the author's other Xena Uber stories. Apart from that - nope, couldn't raise any enthusiasm for it.

But I was bored. I needed new, free, stuff to read. So I went to check one of the sites on our list. Gina Dartt's fanfic website. I knew she mostly wrote Voyager stuff but I own a couple of books by her, and they're excellent. So I thought I'd give her Millennium series a go.

I love them. They are brilliant. I'm still not a Voyager fan. I still can't see the appeal of J/7 in general - but damn, these stories are good.

Someone said if I like these then maybe I should check or Fletcher DeLancey's Voyager stories next. I may just do that, after all, I read her blog.

But I've still got loads of Gina Dartt's stories to read first.

And no - they aren't going to make me a J/7 fan. Just a fan of their writing.

Enjoy your updates. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

Rants: both minor and major.

Today is the beginning of Navaratri, we wish all our Hindu readers a good festival.

A rant about something of little or no importance, but which irritates the hell out of me.

Stuck at home and unable to do anything I get bored. I read a lot. Fanfiction and paid-for books. I also watch the occasional film. The dvd of Prometheus was released recently, I liked the film when I saw it at the cinema so I popped into town to see if the HMV shop had it. They did. The also had box-sets of the four Alien films alongside it. (Good marketing strategy). I've grown used to the awful title the gave that set. It still irritates - but it's been around long enough that I can (mostly) ignore it.

There were a whole lot more box-sets on the next shelf too. They had a special off on - anything from 15 to 40% reductions on various titles. Including a set of all four Die Hard movies.

And they'd done it again. Aaaaarrrrggghhhh.

Dear dvd makers - it is not a quadrilogy. There is no such bloody word as quadrilogy. Quadrilogy is an abomination. It sounds as though it was made up by that obnoxious little man in the Orange turn-your-phone-off adverts. Even spell-check does not recognise quadrilogy.

The word for four of something is quartet. Say it. Quartet. See - it's shorter, it's easier to spell, and it's been a perfectly good word for centuries. Bloody well learn to use it!!

Rant on more importance things.

An aeroplane landed in the UK yesterday. It carried a passenger in need of medical treatment. She will get the best medical care that we can give her. And, God willing, she will recover.

Her name is Malala Yousafzai. She is 14 years old. She was flown here from Pakistan.

She was shot in the head by a cowardly, despicable piece of excrement who does not deserve to breathe the same air that she does.

She was shot because she dared to want to learn. She committed the (to the piece of scum who shot her) unforgivable desire to get an education, and to tell the world that she wanted that education. What kind of person - in what kind of world - thinks that putting a gun to the head of a child is a reasonable thing?? Or that whatever god they believe in wants blood to be shed?? What part of "Thou shalt not kill" isn't clear??

She has more courage in a single strand of her hair than that piece of manure has in his entire body.

I hope she makes it. And I hope some day all girls in every country in the world can get as much education as they want. And that religion becomes about love - not hate. And that scum like that get their just deserts!!

New Archive

A Yahoo group I'm in (for femslash of a TV show) just had an announcement about a new site. One of the members has set up a femslash archive. There aren't an awful lot of stories on there yet, but the site is hoping for lots more to be posted soon.

I'm not reporting it yet - mainly because I'm not sure if it's an archive-by-submission site or an upload-your-own-fic (FF Net style) site. We don't as a rule post updates from FF Net style sites (too hard to keep track of) unless the author requests it. But I'll keep monitoring this new one to see if it is something we should report on.

There are several sites of that type. AO3 (Archive of Our Own) also l-word, which in spite of the name does not restrict itself to fics of that show. Fictionpress - which is for original fiction rather than fanfic. And of course FF Net.

Most of these carry slash and het as well as femslash and gen, of course. This new archive is femslash only. If you've been looking for a home for a story and none of our usual sites suit you maybe that sort will.

I'm about to take a painkiller and head for bed. Hope your week has been better than mine.

Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

I Should Have Touched Wood

It was Canada's Thanksgiving Day yesterday, hope our Canadian readers had a good day.

OK - onwards.

It really is a bad idea to tempt fate. (I wonder where that expression originated. The Bible probably. Or Shakespeare. All the best quotes do.)

When I wrote my little bit last week I really should have touched wood. (In England we "touch wood" we don't "knock on wood" like USAmericans do).

You know that little smug phrase about it not being me in hospital this time. Boasting that I wasn't injured was just begging for trouble.

Thursday morning started reasonably well. The weather wasn't too bad. I was a little tired (had been Wednesday night as well) and I hadn't slept particularly well. I wasn't really looking forward to work. There wasn't any painting or papering to be done until this week, so I was helping out the brickies. They were putting breeze-blocks inside some of the brick shells. (The houses are brick outside with breeze-block inside and a cavity between the two that is filled with insulation.) My job was basically fetch-and-carry. You can't get a fork-lift truck into some of the spaces on a part-built house, so we use a thing called a hand operated pallet truck. They carry a huge load, but they're a PITA to manoeuvre. And I was the muggins manoeuvring it.

The house I was working with was on a slight slope. Which wasn't helping. The slope led to a grassed area which ended at the wall. The wall ran down - not up. At this point you're about 1200cm - four feet - above the ground. Turning a pallet truck around a 90 degree bend, into a doorway which is only just far enough from the edge to allow the forks in. The handle has to stay at an angle. And the operator wishes they'd thought to wear crampons, or bring a rope and pitons. Because you are walking a very tight (and unsteady) line along a wall made of a single-row of bricks.

I spent all morning doing that. To and fro. Pushing that damned truck. My shoulder ached, my legs ached and I was right fed-up.

You can almost see it coming, can't you??

By the afternoon I was too tired to be doing this. I knew it, the boss knew it, I'd asked to be shifted but been told there was no-one else to do the job. Against my better judgement I carried on. Just after three o'clock it all went pear-shaped.

My foot slipped slightly and the truck went round the corner too close to the edge. The truck is heavy. It had a full load of breeze-blocks on it. There was no way I was going to be able to stop it. It slid backwards, sending me over the edge. And it followed me.

I pushed away from it as hard as I could. If I was going to hit the deck, fine, but I was NOT going to have it landing on top of me!! I rolled over in mid-air to protect my bad shoulder and then I hit the ground.

Do you know what happens when you hit concrete paving at the end of a four-foot fall?? You break your right wrist. And you twist your knee. And you have bruises all down your left side. And a black eye.

The doctor in the A & E dept brought up my records and said, "My, you're a regular here, aren't you." and he laughed. I didn't find it quite as funny.

So now I'm off work. With my wrist in a splint. And I'm losing wages again. I came to an agreement with the boss. If he wasn't so bloody stupid as to try and make me pay for the truck, and the paving, and a pallet of blocks (none of which survived the fall), I wouldn't sue him for failing in his health-and-safety regs in not providing a barricade to prevent me falling over.

My cousin said I'm not a person. I'm a catastrophe. I think she's right.

My sister just said, "Oh no, not again."

Hype!

I missed an episode on September 20th - Tellofilms V - The Final Frontier (of the Throwaways). Give it a listen. And here's the skinny on Allaine's upcoming show....
Swan Queen Rises Again!

www.blogtalkradio.com/allaine/2012/10/11/swan-queen-rises-again

Tonight F4F Radio will be continuing one of two discussion panels from the month of June. Regular audience members know that while we normally interview authors and filmmakers about their work, we do also occasionally have panels where the authors visit to discuss the fandom itself, not their own work. Past examples have included All My Children, Babylon 5, and Harry Potter. This time we'll be exploring the world of the hit ABC series "Once Upon a Time", which just began its second season, coming off a year of being the top-rated new drama on that network. OUAT is at the forefront of Hollywood's renewed interest in fairy tales, with NBC's "Grimm" getting renewed as well and two different Snow White movies in theaters earlier this year. While there's a lot to be said about this show, such as the work of actors like Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Carlyle and Giancarlo Esposito, or the similarities between OUAT and the creators' last show, ABC's "Lost", we'll be focused on the "Swan Queen" phenomenon which quickly became popular at the start of the season. "Swan Queen" is the name most often used to describe the pairing of heroine Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and villainess Regina Mills (Lana Parrilla), a.k.a. the Evil Queen. People have always loved hero/villain relationships, of course, and SQ is currently one of the most popular couples on sites like Fanfiction.net and ArchiveOfOurOwn. We'll be looking at SQ from ALL angles, from Henry to hatesex, dark curses to true love, Snow to Cora. Tonight's panel will once again consist of myself and four other SQ authors - Heartsways (who discussed her Lost Girl fic earlier), Writetherest, Fictorium, and AdventurePants. Live listeners are encouraged to call in with opinions of their own.

Free Books

Saturday was Michaelmas (pronounced here, in our usual lazy fashion, as Mikkelmus), more properly named The Feast of St. Michael and all Angels. And as is usual on that day I mourned the lack of Michaelmas Daisies. So common in my childhood, they've fallen out of fashion now. And then today I was visiting the main hospital, (a place with which I am all too familiar), and - lo and behold - there in the grounds was a huge patch of them. Brilliant!!

They're smaller than I remember. Or maybe it's that I'm bigger. About twice as high as I was back then. *g* I still love them though. Scruffy, scrawny, but determined. You have to admire that.

Oh, yeah, don't worry. This trip to the hospital wasn't because I'd damaged myself again. I was just visiting a friend. She's in getting a knee replacement. She fell from a horse when she was younger, and shattered her knee. It's been a nuisance ever since and now it's finally given up functioning altogether. So they're operating to give her a plastic one instead. She was bored and grumpy when she texted me, so I dropped some books in for her to read.

Speaking of books - here's a fantastic offer from an bloody good author, via one of our regular ramble providers.

Hey there Uber Etc'ers! I want to make sure you know about the book give away going on right now over at Cocktail Hour. Andy and I were joined by author D. Jordan Redhawk to chat about some of her work - primarily Iditarod, Tiopa Ki Lakota, and Strange Path - and she graciously agreed to send autographed copies of the first three of the Sanguire series to one lucky listener.

If you're interested, please give a listen to the show and get all the details on how to get entered. Cocktail Hour Good luck!
    Rev

Now THAT'S an offer for you. Those books are brilliant. Well worth reading. In fact all Red's stuff is well worth reading. Don't just take my word for it - go - read!!
