Isn't it quiet

Without aeroplanes??

The weather's been great this past week. Bit chilly of an evening but the days have been sunny and warm, with clear skies. Not a cloud in sight. Not a 'plane in sight either. No contrails, no flashing lights, no engine noise; just glorious, unbroken, blue sky.

Nobody really pays attention to aircraft - except when Concorde still flew - people always stopped and stared at her - so nobody's really consciously aware of the quiet. They should start flying again soon and we're really going to notice it for a day or two. (Our airport isn't terribly big but it is an international and we're on the flight-path most days). It'll all get back to normal quickly with aircraft flying past frequently and we'll stop noticing again. It's been nice for a while - gives you a taste of what life was like before they invented the things.

It's been a bit of a nightmare for the stranded though. Some teachers didn't make it back from their Easter hols so some schools couldn't open this week. So many people have been trying to get home by other means that you can't get a train or ferry reservation for the next three weeks or thereabouts. And you could write your name in the dust that settled on parked cars...

I wouldn't want to be permanently without aeroplanes. I love to travel. I've been all over the world (every continent but Antarctica) and there are still places I want to see or that I want to return to. And there are friends across the ocean that I want to visit and I really can't spare the six weeks or so it would take to get there by ship and train *g*.

But it has been nice for a few days. Peaceful.

In 2001 I was going to school near an Air Force base (in the States), where you got used to hearing B-52s and fighter jets take off. When September 11 grounded flights, it got spookily quiet.

Then, when Bush invaded Afghanistan, there were bombers taking off every couple of hours. I'm not sure which one--the silence or the noise--was more eerie.
