Well. Not quite singing. (If you've ever heard me even attempt to sing you'd know why). But yep. Rain. Rain, rain, and more rain. Floods all over the place during this past week. Since we live at the top of a hill we've been ok. A lot of people in this county have not been so lucky. The Environment Agency finally lifted the flood alert status from the nearby rivers today.

And I hear that in the USA you've been having heat-waves, with temperatures high enough to cause deaths.

Climate change is real. Honest it is. Please - Save the Arctic.

Caring for Kara - Auction Info.

Fandom rocks. The community - hell, make that communities, because we are legion but we are linked - comes together regularly to help its members. I should know - after my accident, when I was unable to work, the Xena fandom, along with some good friends, who just happen to be writers, and a whole bunch of other friends including my fellow grunts on this site, got together and raised enough for me to pay my living expenses for several months. I remain unbelievably grateful, and if any of those friends ever need me - well - I'll do my damnedest to be there...

The Xenaverse has come together in this way on several occasions and helped folk out. I belong to several fandoms and so I know that it isn't only the Xenaverse that does this. I've seen CSI fans rally round to help people in need. And Star Trek fans. Fandom can be a fantastic place, full of generous souls.

Well, another sister needs help.

A message from author Roselle Graskey

A plethora of authors have banded together for an auction to help raise funds for Kara Leonardo. Kara and her partner Stephanie Marvel were in an auto accident on Feb 11. They were hit head on by another vehicle. Sadly Stephanie was killed instantly. Kara suffered a broken arm and multiple fractures of leg and pelvis. Kara will be leaving the rehab hospital soon, she will stay with her mom but only as a temporary thing. She has no other place to go.

We have created a page at Caring for Kara We know economic times have been tough, but any little bit helps.

Kara has long been a supporter of les fic and for us authors she's always had words of encouragement and bought books when she could. Now it's our chance to hopefully give back to her.

The auction will run until Aug 5. If anyone wishes to bid, please run right out and do so, for those who wish to donate something but not bid, we will have a paypal page set up in the next few days. If you don't wish to do paypal you can email Roselle Graskey to make arrangements.

Every single penny donated/bids will go to Kara.

A Life Well Lived

The boys' Great Grandmother passed away yesterday evening. The hospital was recommending that she go to Hospice care today. I'm glad she went before she had to be disturbed just to be transported to another location.

This was Cal's first experience with death. He cried when he saw her in the hospital. Kissed her goodbye every time we left. Last night he cried quite a bit. We all got to see her and talk to her before she took the turn for the worse and for that I'll always be thankful.

Farewell, GG.

Our trip to Oklahoma brought us the opportunity to say a final goodbye to Mike's grandmother. GG as she was known to the kids went to the emergency room this morning with shooting pains up her side. She's been struggling with congestive heart failure for the past few months and has been in and out of the hospital. When we arrived in OKC she was just getting out of a rehab facility and was on the waiting list for an assisted living facility.

I spent the day at the hospital with my former mother-in-law. Grandmother thankfully has been out of it since she came to the hospital in quite a bit of pain. Turns out her kidneys had failed. She has a DNR on file and right now is slowly winding down to departing this life. Mike's brother is at the hospital now. I've come home to sleep. Gayle will head home, clean up and then go back to the hospital. If she makes it through the night we'll head over again tomorrow.

I'm glad we got to see her alive and well. She was a feisty sometimes maddening old gal and we'll miss her.

Sunshine

I know many of you in the US are getting too much of the stuff...here's hoping the heat dies down soon. However, for us folks up in the northwest the sun is finally showing itself and we are looking at 5 days with no rain in the forecast and some of those days will be in the 80's. Today was mid 70's and absolutely beautiful. Another few days off for me, hence mini vacation and I am pleased about it.

Rebels' Day Report

Last year we didn't get to do any fireworks because of a burn ban across the state. This year, however, the weather was with us and we trekked to Mustang, Oklahoma and spent several hours amidst a whole lot of noise and smoke.

We were joined by my friend Tracey, my brother, Mike's brother and his friend Diane, the Alfred family and several hundred Oklahomans looking to bask in some chaos. As usual we took hot dogs and cooked them while we waited for darkness to descend.

I spent way too much on fireworks for the kids but I can feel good that I wasn't one of those folks who walked out of the fireworks place with the $999.99 mega pack. To be fair it was buy one, get one free.

All of us had a great time and we look forward to repeating it next year.

Happy Birthday USA

First - HAPPY REBELS' DAY to all our US American readers.

Went to see the new Spiderman movie. It wasn't bad. But did they have to have so many close-ups of so many spiders?? Wouldn't one have been enough?? There isn't a lot of point paying to see a movie if you're going to spend a third of it with your eyes closed!!

The new 'puter - it's so fast and has so much RAM and hard-drive space that I can finally use that card my sister gave me and get two months free subscription to LoveFilm (like netflix but been around longer in the UK). Because I can now actually watch movies on my laptop without it freezing, crashing, or simply refuse to stream. Excellent. Hope they have that Helen Mirren film I wanted to see earlier this year, but missed because it was only showing for a week... I think I'm going to like having a totally new 'puter. (Yes, I am going to go on about it for a few days yet - I've had 'puters for over 15 years and this is my first ever brand-new one so I reckon it's worth celebrating for a week or two).

My browser's UK version of the dictionary doesn't think movies is a word. But then it doesn't care much for Buffy, femslash, or Rizzoli, either. It's still a better dictionary than anything MSWord has managed to cobble together. Not that I'm using that. I downloaded OpenOffice as soon as I could. Much more to my taste.

It's still raining, btw, there's a very good reason England's "Green and Pleasant Land" is green. We're all on flood-alert again. And people still doubt climate change. Hah!!

I Haz a New 'Puter

*bounces*.

First impressions. Bloody Ada - what are all these programmes and which ones can I get rid off?? Blimey, what are all these processes and how many can I shut down?? OK, where have they hidden everything?? Where's "run"?? Who the hell thought "libraries" was a good idea?? I hate this control panel. And who designed this "all programmes list"?? I can't find a damn' thing. And bugger - all of my wallpapers are the wrong size. But boy - isn't it fast!! I can't remember the last time a browser opened this quickly. Sometime back when I was using Firefox 3, I think.

After playing around for a while I found "run". Cleaned up the "start up", got rid of a few unnecessary things. It'll take me a little longer to get things exactly how I want them but so far, so good.

I can't see me ever filling up this hard-drive though. No matter how much of my favourite fan-fiction I save to it. (I've got loads - all on cd, because my old drive was too small.)

I reckon Win 7 be fine once I get fully accustomed to it.

And it's brilliant having a new 'puter.

Another Monday Down

Another start of the week. A light weight one for me as I went to work for only a few hours then came home early to pick up the kiddo from basketball camp. No luck tomorrow as grandma will pick her up. Today though allowed me another nap in the afternoon. I sure could get used to these on a full time basis. However, while I am still dizzy and dealing with stuff they have been very useful.

Tomorrow a full day lays ahead.

Countdown to Rebels' Day

Our lazy vacation continues in Oklahoma. This year isn't near as hot as it was last year. Last year Oklahoma went through a massive heat wave and drought around this time. Fireworks were banned everywhere due to the danger of fire. This year the heat isn't near as baking and the vegetation is nice and green. Things will be blown up on the 4th for sure.
