Better Late Than Never

Monday was a snow day for many in my neck of the woods. Kids were finally given their opportunity to enjoy a day off to play in the white stuff. In turn giving me and many other parents an unscheduled day off as well. Hence my desk showed the results of that frolicking about. Sometimes I think a day off really takes 2 or 3 days to catch up from when they are unscheduled.

Now on to your updates, enjoy 'em!

Ramble from Linda

Yippee! Words from Linda tonight....
The Best Present

Thursday night was my mother's 74th birthday. Family members who live here in Tucson gathered at my house for a party. While we were waiting for Mom to arrive, my nephew Anthony (age 25) was trying to get my nephew David (also 25) to take a bet on something. Asking what was going on, Anthony said he could get his grandmother to swear before the evening was over.

You have to understand that my mother never swears, I mean NEVER. In her words, "It is not ladylike."

Knowing a sucker's bet when we see one, nearly everyone made a bet against Anthony. I made sure that whatever Anthony was going to do would not ruin the night for Mom. He just smiled.

After dinner, it was time for mom's birthday presents. I got Mom a cell phone because she is the hardest person to track down when she is out and about. Among the boys in my family they like to play "Can you top this?" when it comes to mom and her gifts. Each present was topped until it came time for Anthony's present. Anthony and his girlfriend Jessica went up to Mom. Puzzled looks from all of us because they carried no present.

Standing on either side of mom they whispered in her ears. Mom's eyes nearly popped out as she yelled "NO SHIT" and started hugging Jessica. Anthony started collecting his winnings. Of course we were asked "What did you say?" He just smiled and walked back to his grandmother. Mom stopped hugging Jessica long enough to say "I'm going to be a great-grandmother!!" Not only did Anthony win the bet but also gave the top present.

It has been nine years since there has been a baby in the family. The baby is due in September near Anthony's birthday. I'm going to be a great-aunt and I can't wait to start spoiling the next generation of children.

Linda

Congrats to Linda and her family are definitely in order. Enjoy the updates!

Forecasting Disappointment

Snow is not a word folks should not throw around lightly when children are in the room. For days our weather forecasters have predicted snow in my area. And for days it has not occurred. Hence the weekend is coming to a close with a fairly blue sunny sky day ending and one child fairly bummed out.

Gee and I'm only bummed because the work week begins tomorrow. Hoping for the best.

Enjoy your updates.

Rush

Open House for Cal tonight and I'm attempting to get us all fed before we get to spend an hour jostling bodies in the school hallways. He's very excited to have everyone visit his room. So excited that he even wants his older brother to attend.

Y'all enjoy 'em.

Preparing

Went into work earlier today to clear out some issues and allow myself to sort of work from home tomorrow. Have a new tankless water heater being installed, looking forward to the endless hot shower. I'm also going to need it after I stack the cord of wood that's being delivered. A full day of action lies ahead for me. I might even get some of the work I get paid to do done. Maybe.

This afternoon was spent assembling (pictures only, they have given up writing words) a new nifty wheel barrow. Also spent time assembling a few new wood storage racks. All set for tomorrow's adventure, or at least in theory.

One note of thanks to Randalyn, your suggestions were perfect! Now back to your updates, enjoy.

Thick Rain

A beautiful wet and cold Saturday (snow anyone...perhaps later this evening).

My daughter and I once again hunted for snow boots. Ive found this to be a bit challenging this year. They seem to be in short supply for the nifty size two. Or perhaps I'm being way too picky. I don't want to spend $75 on up for them. One season for those growing feet means, cheapness from mom.

What we have found have been girl boots (almost always pink) with cheap stones and crap stuck all over them. Hello, can anyone find me a basic non-frilly semi-decent snow boot (that fits my kiddo's foot)? So far no luck.

We'll attempt more next week since Mid-February we're heading to the mountains for a few days and she's going to need them for sure.

Enough of my rambles, back to your updates! Enjoy.

Recipe Night!

Figured it was a good time to share the Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake recipe that I made Duncan for his birthday.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
6 oz. chocolate chips

Cream butter, sugars, vanilla and egg. Use a spoon - not a mixer! (I'm not sure why this is important but I did it.) Then add dry ingredients, then nuts and chocolate chips. Spread on a greased pizza pan. Bake 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

Now for my additions. When I was mixing this recipe up I realized it wasn't going to make a very big "cake". I doubled the recipe and blew off the pizza pan idea. I spread the dough in a 9 x 13 pan and cooked that puppy for 30 minutes. It came out perfectly and tastes just like a big ol' chocolate chip cookie that you made at home. Store bought chocolate chip cookies (and cakes) are way too sweet. This one has that nice salty bite of a good chocolate chip cookie.

Ramble from Kali

Words being shared tonight. On to Kali's ramble.
Liars suck great big gobs of and cause stress; good eventual triumphs over evil.

Someone hit my car at the end of the year and caused a lot of damage. I'm fine, but my car was barely drivable. The right front fender, bumper & wheel were a mess. The steering was off and I feared my wheel would fall off leaving me stranded. The accident was totally the other guy's fault. On a 4 lane road with 2 lanes in each direction, he decided he wanted to be in my lane & never looked to see I was there. Luckily no one was coming in the opposite direction. At rest my car was facing the left lane for oncoming traffic.

At the time he fessed up to it. He gave me all his info. Then nothing. He never contacted his insurance company; I called mine the moment I drove my car home. I had dropped my collision on this car so figured his insurance would pay up and I took my car off to an auto body shop for an estimate. Close to 4 grand without being sure the suspension wasn't toast. Yikes, happy holidays. I call his Ins company and actually have to start the claim, since he was AWOL. They couldn't even reach him & asked me if I'd gotten his phone number. I never thought to ask for it assuming the insurance companies would handle it. His ins co gave me his agent's number. I called & no he hadn't started a claim with them & they hadn't reached him either.

His ins co looked at my car, assessed the damage, but didn't accept liability. So here I am w/o a car & no idea when they'll track this guy down to get his statement. I get a call on my home machine on Friday at 4:30pm on December 21st from his company telling me that a claims agent has been assigned, but that she'll be on vacation the following week for the Christmas holidays. Talk to you maybe next year. Since I didn't hear the message until I got home from work I couldn't call until the 26th since no one would even answer. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I reach someone else in their claims dept on the 26th and they agree to take my statement. They've still not heard from their insured. Eventually they reach him and he says I tried to pass him on the left and hit him. They won't assume liability. I hate liars and now call the auto body place and to say start the work. I get a cheap rental as my car won't be done until the 11th.

My insurance co says I'll have to go through small claims court since I don't have collision anymore. I look online for what I need to do to file. Not happy, but they say they will get a copy of this guy's statement so I'll know what I'm up against.

On the days after new years I get a nice message on my cell phone. His company is accepting liability. The guy must have been a sucky liar and when they reviewed the facts they decided to pay. They said they'd only cover my rental from date they decided to assume liability. Huh? He hit me 2 weeks earlier and now that they finally look into it their only going to pay from then on. I call my ins co and they say no, they should make you whole from date of the accident. I call back & say this to claims agent. They don't even have the correct date of accident. Apparently their insured really is a lousy liar.

They ask how my shoulder is from seatbelt as I'd mentioned a slight pain. I saw my body worker & she fixed my up. His ins asks how much did it cost. I say and they say will pay that & give you an extra $500 for pain & suffering and they'll pay my rental fees. The stress of it all was pretty lousy, like where am I going find $4 grand.

I'm not sure who smiled on me this year but so far the year is looking up. I have my car & some of the money they promised, just waiting for the rental reimbursement. Plus I didn't have to lay out money for my deductible. My mom waited a year to get hers back from her insurance company when she was hit. So all in all other than stress & inconvenience I'm up some cash & part of my car looks really shiny & new.

Kali

I agree with you, Kali! I'm also very glad to see things looking up. Reminder...if you feel like sharing, let us know. Have a great night and enjoy the updates.

Where did that truck come from?

After a very long and frustrating week it ends on a crappy note. Someone can take back this stomach flu that has delivered itself to my doorway. No sleep on Thursday night and trying to make a 7 year old feel better when I knew she had a long ways to go. Friday was spent trying to clean, do laundry and taking care of a sick kiddo. Then it was my turn. The truck hit around 3 pm yesterday.

So what's left, not much. Feeling down and hoping for some rest. Have a very cabin fevered pumpkin who is on the edge of health, but needs a bit more time for completion. Way too much energy for me at the moment.

On that stellar note, may you have have a wonderful weekend. Short update even, giving you lots of opportunities to get out and have fun. Do stay away from the roaming truck though.

TGIF...sorta....

What a week it's been for E. Issues switching her ISP (which has now turned into a corrupted Outlook Express, for which Microsoft wants $150 to walk her through fixing it), dealing with Seattle's horribly busy plumber market (try getting an estimate from someone for a new on-demand water heater), and last night Puke-a-thon 2008 hit her house. Yep, she and little E were up all night. Think good stomach settling thoughts for both of them.

Read!

E still doesn't like Qwest. Looks like no email for her until next week. Amazing how one little glitch can throw a whole system awry.

Qwest

What does customer service mean today compared with even 10 years ago? One week ago I made the plunge to bundle my DSL with the Qwest service to MSN. I ordered it through a very nice woman over the phone; I got my ticket/order number and everything. I was promised a "smooth" transition on Tuesday evening. Snail mail would bring me my welcome set up CD and at 5 pm my ISP would transfer over.

I so should have known better. I hadn't even been drinking so no good excuse for my stupidity and belief in the system. First problem it was Qwest, hence nothing was going to go right (past experience should have told me that). Secondly I got up Tuesday morning to NO ISP because Qwest in all their grand excitement and plans cut off my other ISP and changed over early. Irritated I went to work to ignore it 'til the mail brought me the easy setup disc I now needed to get online.

Trusting not, at work printed up the "easy configuration" instructions for my modem. Get home, gee helpful; no disc arrived in the mail. Get on the phone with Qwest (call one) wait 20 minutes. Mind you I have online billing hence no paper copy and my DSL is standalone, so I don't know the number...never needed to bother. The nice tech support dude says, gee sorry that Ticket number isn't in the system and without your account code I can't find you. I guess my name and address are worthless to the system. So he transfers me to the business office. (call two) Wait 9 minutes and a nice woman comes online, goes to look up the account, says wow, it wasn't entered right, you'll need to go back to tech support. (call three) After waiting for 7 more minutes, line disconnects me from the system. Mind you I have now heard the "your business is important to us and we know your time is valuable. Try our online form for help", love that.

Call back tech support (call four) wait another 10 minutes to get through, finally someone actually gets my modem set up because the easy friendly online info sheet they had was "sorry out of date" according to the tech. So yeah, online...wait though...how do I get my email? Gee sorry no email was in this package...what? How can email not be included in an ISP package with MSN? So he sends me back to the business office (call five). Furious and wait 5 more minutes, gee we're awfully sorry about all this. The set up of the order wasn't done correctly, let me transfer you to a group called loyalty...what the h*** does that mean? At this point I so don't want to be transferred and once again put on hold. Call six, loyalty...nice young guy once again apologizes for that 8 minute wait I just had, gee I already have spent over an hour on my cell phone for all this crap. He sadly lets me know, sorry the account was not set up correctly, hence your email package is not set up and will not be configured until Thursday.

So I'm able to get online (yeah), but my Outlook and email accounts are locked on web only (urr, sucks). Me beyond frustrated, that's what I get trying to save $27.95 per month. According to my cell phone I used up 92 minutes of time more than half on hold. I hate Qwest and I cannot even email them to tell them how much. But my time is valuable and they have a great customer service system.

Now that you made it through that rant...enjoy your updates! Email me what you think...but please wait, because we all know it ain't gonna happen tomorrow. Early next week I'm assuming or hoping.

Frustration

I'm filling in for E tonight who has been having fun chatting on the phone with her new ISP. Yes, when it comes to switching ISPs, nothing can go smoothly. Why is it you always have to go through several layers of folks who are clueless to get to that one person who figures out your issue? Send your positive, calming thoughts E's way.

The big heavy stuff, as in furniture, is all moved and in place. Now the lighter but harder part...putting all the crap back into order or some semblance of order. Hence it's been a long weekend of movement. The cats and I will both be pleased when it's over.

Warm

We've hit a brief warm spell here in Oklahoma--70 (21C) in January. I even saw folks wearing shorts today. I'm not complaining though. Not one bit. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts because I know the wind and frigid temps will be returning soon enough.

And the Bronze goes to....

Both E and my mother have beaten me to the punch when it comes to removing all of the holiday decorations around the house. My tree still sits there, adorned but unlit, waiting to be put away until next year. I've used the excuse of the kids being off this week to avoid tackling the tree.

It'll be easier next week when I'll have a good two hour chunk with just me and Max at home. I can get all of my bins filled and the area tidied without having to referee a fight. I won't have to worry about Cal wanting to help and then doing nothing but play with the ornament that's shaped like a video game controller (complete with buttons and sound). I can work without the strains of Guitar Hero III in the background. I'm heartily sick of Paint It Black.

I do believe this weekend I'll have Mike put away the lighted, moving reindeer in the front yard. I can thank my mother-in-law for that little piece of festive sculpture. We were really good about turning it on the first week he put it up but I think it's stayed off most of December. I keep hoping someone will think it's keen and cart it off one night. Think my chances would be better if we left it up through January?

And We're Off!

Today I ate my black-eyed peas for luck in the New Year. We enjoyed our tacos and enchiladas feast although without my Aunt Gail and cousin Kelsey. Bummer. My dad kept his track record pristine by being a bastard to my mom. And...Cal won more than once playing Dirty on Your Neighbor. Kinda cool that he's getting old enough to play our family card game.

Hope your start to the New Year was a good one.
