Ahhh - soup

It rained today. Very welcome it was, too. Not enough though. You know you need more rain when the soil looks nice and damp but if you stick your fingers into it it's bone dry under the surface.

Of course baking hot & humid weather plus a bit of rain does have an effect on the vegetables in the allotment. Specifically the lettuces. They bolt (all the varieties) and there's not a lot you can do with a lettuce once it's bolted. Most of the leaves will have turned too bitter for salad. You can make a very nice soup from them. It just so happens that I really love soups & stews, so that's not so bad. But it's hellish difficult finding a recipe that doesn't contain butter or cream.

Not that I'll be the one cooking it of course. Anybody who's read the incident of the bacon sandwich knows that the sensible thing to do is keep me well away from the cooker... and any other naked flame. Unless of course you actually want to burn the house down (claiming on the insurance, perhaps).

No I don't cook. I re-heat. I nuke. I can throw together a bloody good salad or three. I can even chuck a whole load of stuff into a pressure cooker, boil it for fifteen minutes and call it stew. But I don't do the preparing-from-scratch-and-cooking-properly thing. I do, however, find the recipes, buy the ingredients and do the washing up afterwards. We have this agreement - my cousin doesn't mind doing all the cooking as long as she doesn't also have to decide what to cook and then clean up. Apparently that's the wearisome thing about cooking, not the doing it but actually thinking about what to do in the first place.

I do have a really good recipe that doesn't have butter & cream in it. I've had it for years. A friend in Cardiff gave me it after I told her how much I enjoyed the soup she made. The only trouble is I've never been able to read it. It's in the weird foreign language you see. One with far too many consonants and not nearly enough vowels. (I refuse to treat "w" as a vowel!!) Of course speakers of that language probably consider it the proper language for this country and English as the strange foreign tongue.

I think I'm probably going to have to type it out carefully and then look pleading and hopeful (not easy to do on the 'net) and beg some friends, who do have a knowledge of the tongue-twister language, to translate for me.

Vacation Continues

We took the kids and Ellen to the Pike Place Market Ghost Tour and it was darn fun. Mercedes was very knowledgeable on the local history and it's worth the $15 dollar ticket. I would recommend it to folks for an enjoyable 90 minutes.

Good News.

I was all set to regale you with tales of my adventures clearing out my cupboard. A futile attempt on my part at "de-cluttering". Have you ever noticed how something that fits in a cupboard a metre square turns into a pile of junk four metres cubed when it's on the living room floor?? And that, even though it all came out of the cupboard, it would take a small nuclear explosion to get it all back into the cupboard.

And then all sorts of things happened to change my mind about tonight's ramble.

First - All Riiiiight!! Celebrating with my Californian friends. Propostion 8 declared unconstitutional. What d'ya know - the system works. About bloody time!! Great to have some good news for a change. I'm so bloody chuffed for you guys.

Second - a good mate - a great writer - Shadowriter posted a blog entry. I loved it and agreed wholeheartedly with her. She gave me permission to link to it. So here goes This is Not a Story.

We didn't do much today because we're gearing up for a full week of going starting Monday. My mother has been fully sucked into Farmville. I'm not sure she'll remember all of the little Facebook things we've shown her but she's more knowledgeable than she was.

Tomorrow we won't do much of anything. Mom and I will make a trip to a local fabric store. I'll probably end up taking Cal to the park. I'm looking forward to being a slug.

Sick of Going

My mother has been visiting for the past week and a half. I've discovered it's easier to have her here when we actually use part of her visit to go on a vacation. Since we're staycationing this year I've felt obligated to show her some of the sights in the area. I'm seriously sick of going.

We took today off and didn't do anything. Of course, when I mentioned to E that we were heading to Target she said, "I thought you weren't going anywhere today?" My reply was that I don't consider going to Target going somewhere. Doing something like Target is just running an errand. You don't have to use the GPS and get frustrated by inadequate highway signage. It's a stress free outing.

Tomorrow mom and I will take Cal to the Everett Children's Museum (or Imagine Children's Museum). That should be pretty easy and he'll have a good time. Next week we've got a few big outings planned so I think this weekend we'll take it easy. Hopefully mom won't get too bored.

I had a tale all ready to tell you tonight. And then a friend posted a blog entry that made me sit up. So I decided to link to her blog instead and post my fluff next week You've all read (or skipped over) my rants on plagiarism (feb last year) and the fact that it's stealing. Well I feel the same way about piracy. And so does my friend.

This is Karin Kallmaker's (and if you don't know who she is, shame on you!!) blog Romance & Chocolate. This entry is about piracy.

Please don't do it. There's plenty of stuff on the web that's made available to you free of charge. Everything we report, in fact. Read that if you can't afford to buy a book. But please don't steal a book you should be paying for. It's theft.

Let me say that again louder. IT'S STEALING. If you download something which you should have paid for and you haven't paid for it then you are a thief just as much as if you walked into a bookshop and walked out with a paperback under your coat.. Theft is wrong. Thieves are worthless. It's that simple.
