Rain and More Rain

We are getting downpours unlike Seattle more like Oklahoma. Kinda of fun if our shed didn't leak and other concerns of 40mph winds that could take down the trees that surround us. Other than that the rain is nice. Our stove is heating us well. In general, it could be worse.

Enjoy your updates.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Three Day Weekend

It was really nice to get off early from work today. Cal and I picked up the comics before traffic got too nasty. On the way home we stopped at Target to pick up a few more school supplies.

I might have some BWS Michelmas fun soon. E came home early because she's feeling poorly. Time to wake her up and see what's on the agenda for the evening....

Incy, Wincy...

It was the first day of Autumn last Sunday and today it really felt like it. It was clammy, foggy, and damp. And, as is usual with fog at this time of year, all the thousands of spider-webs that cover every bush, or stretch between every grouping of two or more plants, became very visible.

The complex pattens of delicate strands, sparkling with drops of moisture, and shrouded in mist would be incredibly beautiful if only they weren't occupied by things with eight legs!!

Where do all these enormous, yellow-striped monstrosities suddenly appear from?? Where do they hide for the rest of the year?? Why are there only two sizes - 1) big and 2) bloody huge - why are there no tiny ones??

And why are all the hard-as-nails, rough, tough, bold, strong butches terrified of the little buggers??

I always close my eyes for the first fifteen minutes or so of any Spider-Man movie, and rely on audio-description to tell me what's happening. Yet my femme, loves pink, had ballet lessons, straight, sister - who phones for help if her cat brings in a bird, frog, or mouse because she can't bear to touch a dead thing - can pick up a spider with total equanimity and lovingly place it outside. And she's even capable of going to sleep knowing there's one in the room somewhere!! **shudder**

Aaaghh - now I've spooked myself - I know there isn't one in my room (not with the amount of Raid I've spread around) - but just talking about it has given me the screaming abdabs and I'm having to resist the urge to check in every corner.

Strange things, phobias, make no sense. But then, I suppose if they made sense they wouldn't be phobias, would they??

See you next week, goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

RIP Puddy-Cat

I'm on the mend. The swelling has gone down, the scrapes are healing over, the bruises have faded to a dull yellow and will probably be completely gone in another week. People have stopped looking at me in shock and asking, "Oh my God, what happened to you??" And it doesn't hurt. All of which is pretty good.

The dried superglue in my eyebrow is driving me to drink though!! It's irritating but of you try to remove it it pulls the hairs out. Not fun.

We are currently animal-less. The last of my cousin's cats had to be put to sleep on Friday. She had a massive stroke which left her paralysed. The vet said she wouldn't recover. So we did the kindest (and hardest) thing. She was 19 which is a very good age. My cousin was devastated of course. She's lost all her cats over this past year. All four of them. They were all of a similar age so it's not surprising really. She swears she'll never have another because it's too upsetting when they go. I've been offering as much comfort as I can. Telling her they had a good life (they did - spoilt rotten they were), and reminding her of the happiness they brought her. It takes time but the grief will pass.

With no elderly cats to upset I can start thinking of getting another dog. Not just yet of course, my cousin needs to grieve properly. But sometime soon. I loved her cats and I'm almost as upset as she is, but I've missed having a dog since my boys went.

Brrrrr....

Fall has arrived. Today it was rainy and windy...almost cold enough to start a fire. Soon enough we'll be able to get the house roasting hot.

The boys and I have a short school week. Friday is a half day for us and Monday is a no school day. Good mom that I am I made a dental appointment for them on that Monday. Of course, the kids see that as me being a mean mom.

Cal will be even more upset with me because this Monday after school I'll be taking him for some booster shots. Not looking forward to breaking the news to him. I'm leaning toward the 'spring it on him right after school' rather than warning him in advance so he can stew about it all day.

Weekend Easy

Tamara and I have the weekend free of kids and big commitments. We did some chores today and will do a few more tomorrow. Overall a nice and easy weekend. Had a full week of stress last week, but that now lives behind me and going forward should be a little easier. Here is hoping you all have a splendid weekend and beginning of the week.

Enjoy those updates. Remember, if you have words you want to share, send them our way.

Peace, Health and Happiness.

Lambs, and Goats, and Good Lord That's a Llama.

Having had several discussion with Barbara's mother, on the phone, over the few days prior to our day out to finalise arrangements - decisions such as who buys the bus ticket. It made sense for me to do that as I had to catch a bus to meet them. And - picnic or meal on site? Meals on site tend to be a) expensive, b) junk food, and c) none of them are suitable for me, and as the weather was forecast to be fairly decent, we decided on a picnic. We agreed that I would pay for the tickets and they would provide the picnic.

Friday arrived and I duly bought my "family explorer" ticket and set off to meet them. I took my largest backpack with me, to put the picnic stuff in. Just as well it was the big one because there was loads of food. Barbara was even more chatty than usual and was practically bouncing along the road.

Two bus journeys later and we were there - I'll swear Barbara's shoes must have been magnetised - it's the only possible explanation for the fact that she was still walking on the path and not hovering in mid-air!!

I paid our entrance fee and we walked in, and promptly stopped by the map to decide where to go first. An "entertainment colleague" approached and informed us that there were some born-out-of-season orphan lambs shortly to be bottle-fed in the "small barn" which was to out left, beside the main paddock. And we could help if we wanted. It's hard to say who was more enthusiastic about this - me or Barbara. We headed to the barn. There were a number of different animals there. And that caused Barbara's mother to exclaim in surprise. Thereby giving me the title for this post. Yes there were lambs, and goats (kids really) and a llama.

Barbara and I were both disappointed to learn we were not permitted to feed the llama.

We fed the lambs. Barbara's mother took pictures. I remonstrated, "Hey, no photos!!" She shrugged and said, "You were both grinning so widely and looked so cute that I had to."

Cute?? Cute?? She called me the C word. CUTE?! I pointed out to her that I am not now, never have been, and never will be, "cute". She said, "Of course not. How could I have thought otherwise." I might have believed her if she hadn't been laughing as she said it.

We moved on from the lambs and over to the baby goats. I stuck a 50p piece into the machine and bought us some goat food. We went outside into the paddock and together we fed the goats. I heard the camera go again. I glared at the unrepentant photographer. She smiled sweetly. I gave it up as a lost cause.

Barbara grabbed my hand and dragged me over to the next enclosure to look at the bunnies... ahem... rabbits. Yes, rabbits. Not bunnies. No nope no way, never bunnies, rabbits. There were guinea pigs there too. We were allowed to hold the poor, long-suffering rabbits. They seemed to be resigned to the fact that dozens of children (and the occasional adult) would pet them over the course of the day. The "colleague" in charge of the pen informed us there were some young rabbits and guinea pigs for sale. It was touch-and-go but we managed to leave the pen without buying a rabbit or a guinea pig. Barbara tried the "please, please, please, please" trick again but this time her mother wasn't caving.

Next was a pony ride. They had several rather bored looking Shetland ponies which, for an extortionate additional sum of money, children could ride (on a long rein) around the paddock. I bought her a ticket (the please, please, please worked this time - I wanted her to have a great day). She chose a dapple pony named Pippin. She asked if I wanted a go but I pointed out that I was about three-quarters of a metre too tall, and at least 20 kilos too heavy for it. The "riding colleague" helped her onto the pony and off they went. The pony ambled slowly round the perimeter of the field. When they got back Barbara was smiling so widely I wondered why her face didn't break. She rushed over, hugged me, and said it was absolutely the bestest thing ever.

The trauma of being hugged meant I needed to sit down and so we stopped for lunch. Barbara's mother, (I think I'll call her Mrs B in future it takes less time to type), had prepared a feast not just a picnic. There were little tubs of salad, and sandwiches, and humus with olives and mini ciabattas, and some bowls of fruit salad, and drinks. And all with proper cutlery not plastic.

Fed and watered we carried on. There were gerbils and chipmunks to pet (and resist buying). And some hamsters who weren't in the slightest bit interested in doing anything but sleeping.

And there was a walled enclosure that contained meercats. Which we could look at but not touch of course. I wasn't sure how I felt about that, the meercats being there. They're a fairly recent fad and must have been brought in specially. Barbara was enchanted by the though.

Then we moved on to the otter pen to watch them being fed. Guests don't get to help with that, which I was rather glad about. They get fed with bits of raw octopus and fish-guts in addition to sprats. And, surprisingly, monkey nuts.(Peanuts in the shell). Apparently they love them.

The day finished with a look at the gift shop (naturally). Barbara went home with a soft toy meercats, and otter, and a mug with pictures of rabbits on.

We all had a wonderful time.

See you next week. Goodnight and may your God/s go with you.

I'm Baaaaack...

Did you miss me??

First. Thank you to everybody who sent good wishes, healing thoughts, and get well messages. I'm working my way through them and I will reply to every single one eventually.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about the petting zoo. Today I'll tell the story of why I was in hospital...

There I was, last Tuesday, at work. I was working indoors at ceiling height so, naturally, I was on a ladder. A step-ladder fortunately so I was less than three metres off the ground. I had checked it, set it up, made sure it was on level ground and properly locked, I'd even put up a sign warning that I was on a ladder so to be careful. In other words I'd done everything possible to make sure I was safe.

Unfortunately you can't prepare for other people's stupidity.

It is possible to pick up a three-metre length of laminated worktop by yourself - if you're careful about lifting and positioning. It is even possible to carry it through a doorway and into a room by yourself. It is not, however, possible to wind your way through two - offset - doors and round a corner carrying said worktop by yourself.

But some numpty tried it.

He got through the doors and discovered that he was stuck. So he swung the worktop round and threw it forward and attempted to catch it further down.

He failed.

The worktop crashed, flat side first, into the side of my ladder. A three metre length of high quality worktop is pretty heavy without adding momentum to mass. The ladder tipped sideways and gravity won. The ladder fell. I fell. I hit the ground face first. I was knocked out. I woke up in A&E.

Miraculously no bones were broken - not even a cheekbone. I had concussion of course. I got a cut on my eyebrow which needed superglueing. It will probably scar. I've got some truly spectacular bruises. I look like I've gone a full twelve rounds with Mike Tyson. But other than that I'm fine.

They kept me in hospital for a few days as a precaution. The head injury & blood clot that I got after my motorcycle crash in 2006 left me with slight brain damage and consequently no short-term memory to speak of, and the doc was worried in case this new injury might cause further issues. Luckily it hasn't. No blood clot this time, though they want me to take aspirin for a month just to be sure. (At least it's not warfarin this time). And I'm allowed to read, watch tv, and use my laptop again. Which is great news for all around me because I was becoming dead grumpy!!

So I'm fine. Just bruised. They said if there were no problems, no headaches or blurred vision, I could go back to work on Tuesday. There were no further problems so I went back today. The site manager put me on some very light duties. He winced every time he looked at my face. Pretty much everybody did. It doesn't hurt much though. I got paid for the time off - which was unexpected but welcome.

Oh yeah - the numpty got fired. That was five hundred quid's worth of worktop he trashed.

Feels Like Fall

Gonna have to go get my hoodie before we head to the grocery store. The weather is changing. Our stove may start seeing use here within the next few weeks. We may have said goodbye to summer last week. Change is part of life and gives us all opportunities to seek other paths. Always good to see what is around but remember the grass is rarely greener on the other side. It's kind of like a desert illusion.

So back to your updates, enjoy and have a great week.

Peace, Health and Happiness.
