Season of mists...

Hard to believe it's nearly autumn already. Although the weather today did its best to convince me. It's cold, wet and grey. Quite chilly this evening, sitting here at home, I flatly refuse to put a fire on before November though!!

It's been another fairly quiet week. I'm getting around a little better than I was but I'm still hampered by this broken ankle. Won't be much longer.

Hmm... maybe my family are right. Maybe I do have so many accidents, calamities and interesting incidents because I move too fast. For most things I only have too (two damnit - TWO!! bah humbug) speeds - fast and very fast. Maybe slowing down all the time, instead of just when I'm forced to, would cut down on the chaos which normally surrounds me.

But then what on earth would I write about??

Another busy Saturday for us. E did get some down time I happy to say. Now the kids are off to dinner with Mike and we're finally getting this update done.

Today we're observing the September 11 tragedy here in the US. I would like to think we learned something from it but our current news cycle doesn't seem to support that.

I have to keep in mind that News in the US is big business. It has become entertainment. The loudest, ugliest, most horrifying things sell advertising. As a result, the world gets to see the ugliest aspects of my country. Believe me when I say the majority of my fellow Americans are not like that. We can be great but I know it's hard for the world to believe when all they see is hatred.

I still believe in the ideals upon which my country was founded even if a few have forgotten.

Still stealing.

There seems to be a rash of it lately. A few weeks ago I linked to Karin Kallmaker's blog posts on book stealing. She's not the only one to suffer. Lynn Ames has been hit. Joan Opyr's had her books ripped off.

And so has Xenaverse author S X Meagher. S X is generous enough to leave her first-draft books online - and post her new ones online too - which has to hurt her sales. And yet some lowlife piece of scum is still ripping her off.

And now Andi Marquette is suffering. And if you think it doesn't hurt anybody. This is Andi's blog on the subject.

You think that it doesn't really do any harm. Well - These are living people. They're private individuals working their guts out and not even making a living at it. They're not some long-gone-to-dust old-time Shakespeare or Tolstoy. Not some million-dollar major corporation. They're me and you and the woman who drives the bus, works the checkout, bandages your sprained wrist, operates on your sick pet. They're the cashier at your bank, the teacher in your school, the grad student writing a thesis by day and a novel by night. They work all day and write like crazy in their spare time. They make very little - and still scum steal that by uploading books to torrent sites and sharing them to several hundred of their closest acquaintances - and probably congratulating themselves on being so clever with it.

It isn't harmless. It's theft. Theft of Intellectual Property to be precise. And it hurts people. You've got the book?? Pay for it. Or pretty soon there won't be any books to read.

Rainy Monday

Today it drizzled. I liked that. We had the entire day off for Labor Day here in the USA. I liked that also. And even better is I have tomorrow off as well. Yep, I like that as well.

Full Day

We packed up our 14ft. U-haul half full with comic short boxes and half full of furniture and other boxes. We then unpacked it all in our new climate controlled storage space about 10 miles away. I can easily say I am tired tonight and really do not look forward to having to do that again anytime soon. And definitely not for any reason other than a bigger new house.

We made it....

The kids and I survived our first week (all three days of it) of school. Next week we'll also be breaking things in slowly with a four day week thanks to Labor Day on Monday.

We don't really have big plans for this weekend. Tomorrow, E, little E and I will be packing comic boxes and furniture into a U-Haul truck and driving everything to our storage unit in Lynnwood. I have tomorrow off, yippee! I'm taking advantage of the American Labor Day Holiday weekend and then for good measure I slammed one more day off with my daughter before her school starts, hence no work for me until next Wednesday. I'm a happy camper.

Tempus fugit

Blimey, it's September already. Nearly autumn (or spring if you're south of the equator). Doesn't time fly?? Where did the year go??

Another hot, sunny, day today. I did not carry out my threat to go to work in a sports bra. *g*. Nor did I wear shorts. (I don't do shorts!!) But I did switch from jeans to a pair of khaki combats (thin cotton trousers), and from a polo shirt to a t-shirt. It was slightly better.

Had a wee bit of a problem with the washing machine when I got home. Outflow pipe got blocked (those little sachet things can be a right royal pain if they don't fully dissolve). No fun disconnecting the outflow and unblocking it when the machine is (naturally, since it couldn't drain) full of water. Took some doing not to flood the kitchen completely. I got a bit of water on the floor and a lot of water on me but I kept it pretty well under control other than that. Certainly cooled me down, though.

A mate described me as "a hazard" the other day. Does this make me a water hazard?? *g*

Ok - there's a slight addition to tonight's updates. Right at the end there's a single story marked extra. Unlike our usual updates it's not femslash. But it is special. I mean - how often do you get a Nicola Griffith story for free?? Totally with her permission. She posted the link on her blog and said to go read it. So I did.
