Here in the US the slow march to marriage equality is underway. In New Mexico, a few stubborn county clerks decided New Mexico state law didn't prohibit people of the same sex getting married in the state. Lynn Ellins, the Dona Ana County Clerk, is being taken to court by a few state legislators. Mr. Ellins doesn't feel the taxpayers should foot the bill for his defense so he's set up a legal defense fund. The fund is well on its way toward the $40,000 goal. Made it!

Almost through a whole week of school that is. After we had nothing but rain the first three days of school, I was sure glad to see our forecast for sun this week. What I wasn't expecting was a heat wave to accompany that sun. I've discovered our rooms at the high school have zero air flow. By about 12 it's unbearably stuffy. That's not an ideal environment for autistic kids (or me for that matter). Bring on the cooler Fall temperatures now please.

A Day of Remembrance

In the United States this day is one of filled with memories. In my opinion we can hope more about their lives and less about their deaths.

Moving forward, I am pleased that we chose not to "pinpoint" a military response to a civil war that is not in our country. Maybe we are learning?

Surprise!

You've got me and E for awhile. Ze met with a little mishap while at work. According to her cousin, it wasn't even Ze's fault. She did suffer a concussion and, as a precaution, is in hospital (as the Brits say) for a bit. The worst part of it though is she can't have books, a computer or television. The nurses may find that they get chatted up quite a bit. Be sure to send good wishes Ze's way.

It's a beautiful sunny Sunday here in Shoreline. I hope the school week ahead holds weather like this. It'll be nice to get outside with the kids at school.

Speaking of kids, we've got ours with us this week. That means it'll finally feel like school's begun. Now comes the biggest challenge after a summer off...coming up with dinners for us. It's so easy to get by without cooking when it's just me and E.

Shameless Plug

I am happy to announce that Ylva have decided to publish my story "Rich Girl". You can find more info at Ylva, so I won't reiterate it here.

Astrid offered to beta-read the story, and she had a lot of input for me. "Show, don't tell." "More details, I want to feel the place." So I sighed and did what I hate most: work over a story I had thought was finished. At least this would ease the proper editing process. Or so I thought.

Then Sandra took over, and when I opened her mail, I nearly had a heart attack. She is a really nice person, but she is relentless. I wanted to strangle her. Or myself. Just to make the pain go away. She made me re-write one scene four times, which necessitated adjustments in other parts. I was about to throw in the towel when she finally wrote, "Good news. Now it works." Hallelujah!

That's what you get when you play with professionals. But I must admit that the story profited very much, which is all that counts. Thank you, Astrid and Sandra. I'm proud to be part of the pack.

It's Rosh Hashanah - we wish all our Jewish readers a blessed new year.

Apparently, according to Julian (Xena writer Steve Sears' dog), it's also Xena: Warrior Princess Day. To all our Xenite readers - have a good one - and watch your favourite episodes. (I'm settling down with One Against an Army and Ides of March).

Yeay!! Free. Last day at that site. Resisted the urge to kick the bigot into the middle of next week. I did, however, tell him he was a bigoted arse and I was glad I'd never have to work anywhere in his vicinity again. He seemed shocked. I don't think he's ever been challenged before.

Little Barbara is pleased to hear I'll be back in her area. Even though the day I start is the day she returns to school. As soon as she heard I have the rest of the week off she did that thing kids are so good at. The wear-your-mother-down-until-she-says-yes thing. The "Can I mummy, please, please, please, can I??" thing.

She wanted to go to the petting zoo. Her mother said she could. Her mother doesn't drive. The local all-day bus ticket is the same price for one adult and one child as it is for two adults and up to two children. (I know - doesn't make sense - I don't get it either). So Barbara decided I could go too. Her mother gave me that helpless-in-the-face-of-determined-child look and shrugged. "Would you??", she said. "Why not", I replied.

Luckily for Barbara I'm a big softie where animals are concerned and love that kind of thing.

So on Friday we're off to pet the guinea pigs and hold the rabbits and feed the baby goats. I'll let you know how we get on.

Very long day today.

It started at 05.30 and finished at 21.00. One last push to finish up everything on this site before moving back to the other one. I'm too tired to even know my own name.

Labor Day

It's Labor Day here in the US and Canada. This means school is right around the corner...this Wednesday as a matter of fact. E's commute will have more traffic. The kids will have to get on an early to bed sleep schedule. No more sleeping in. I'll miss that even though my sleeping in usually didn't go past 8. I'll likely be a bit of a zombie the first few weeks of school while I get used to my 6:30 wake up time. I'm not a morning person at all. Other than all of that it'll be good to be back at it.
