Back to Reality

I'm almost recovered from Special Olympics. I finished the update on Friday and then proceeded to get hit by a fever. Probably Cal's little bout with illness before SO finally hit me. As a result I was feeling mighty puny all weekend. I did manage to get everyone to take me to see Spider-Man 3 on Mother's Day. It was good...not as good as 1 and 2 but still decent.

Now I'm faced with a house that looks like a tornado went through it (and it's even tornado season here). I want to feel better now so I can get things back to looking like a minor thunderstorm swept through the place.

Weekend wrap up

Lara Zielinsky's yahoo group vanished last week with no rhyme or reason. Hence, Lara has started a new one (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lzfiction2/) and is hoping to gather back the momentum she had created on her other one prior to yahoo's glitch and deletion. She has begun posting her new called Turn for Home there as well hoping for more feedback. So check it out and let her know what you think

Small update for y'all. Giving you prime opportunity to give feedback to all those writers you have been reading lately.

Have a good week.

Home

Back from three days of Special Olympics fun. I must admit I wasn't up for the trip this year. I just came back from two weeks away from home and leaving again so soon wasn't something I was really pumped about doing. Hence...I'm afraid I was cranky Mrs. Hodge with my kids more often than not. Last night after returning from our Y swim party, I told my two roommates "Mrs. Hodge's sanity requires that you be in bed right now." I was bad and didn't let them run around like the other kids. Not that the other kids ran around for a long time. They were all in bed about twenty minutes later as well. All of the adults were needing a break.

So my memories of this Special Olympics will be of tiredness and mud. Lots and lots of mud. My tennis shoes have been christened by Oklahoma red clay. They'll never be the same. I can only be thankful it wasn't a Special Olympics of muggy heat. Those years are never any fun and cranky Mrs. Hodge may have committed murder if faced with that kind of weather.

Enjoy your updates. I'm off to collapse.

Words?

Anyone have some they would like to share? After almost a year of doing these updates I am sure it would be nice for folks to get a change from Tamara and myself.

We started UberEtc May 16th of last year with the motto "We check 'em so you don't have to" it fit our plan well. Hopefully we have succeeded in our mission.

Looking ahead I envision more of you willing to step forward and offer up a ramble or two once in a while to give us grunts a break. We would love to hear from more of you writers and readers on what makes it all tick. And never forget we like food, so throw us your favorite recipes anytime.

We, like most people enjoy feedback, it's a wonderful thing. So let us know what you like and any other suggestions you may have. Until then enjoy the updates!

Hype Night

Once again one of my very favorite authors Nicola Griffith is offering up something special...her memoirs, And Now We Are Going To Have To Party in a super nifty signed box set. This one is a pre-order and you even get a discount through May 27th. There are limited quantities, so hurry by. Mine is happily and safely on order.

And since I'm on the subject of Nicola Griffith, a reminder to all you local Seattlelites, she'll be at the Seattle Mystery Bookshop signing her new Aud book Alwayson Thursday May 10th. I've patiently waited for this event, so I can support a really nifty book store and a flawless author all at one time. I'll purchase two copies one for Tamara and the other for myself. The noon signing event even allows me to swing a extra long lunch, I like that. This will also imply something splendid to read is coming my way very soon.

Now back to the updates, enjoy 'em and have a great night!

Now I definitely know I'm home....

So I regaled you with my first night of crappy sleep at home. Thought I might make up for that last night. No such luck. When I picked the kids up at school yesterday Cal was complaining of not feeling well. I thought it was because he was tired. He had me carry him to the car and I realized he had a fever. Checked it when we got home and it was a whopping 102.7.

After cartoons and couch rest he still wasn't feeling any better so more meds and my bed were next. He fell asleep close to 6 and slept through dinner. I ended up having Mike sleep in Cal's bed so I could keep an eye on him and I figured he would wake up several times during the night. Of course, he didn't disappoint me. I was lucky though in that he always went back to sleep after a little conversation or a trip to the bathroom.

Fortunately I don't feel as wiped as I did yesterday but I'm still dragging. This wouldn't be a big deal but tomorrow is the beginning of three days of Oklahoma Special Olympics summer games in Stillwater. I have to get good rest tonight or my roommates may learn to fear mean Mrs. Hodge.

Home Again

I arrived in OKC last night a little after 12:30 am. Ended up waiting through the entire luggage cycle only to find out my second suitcase wasn't on the baggage carousel. I went to United's baggage claim, turned in my ticket and was told it had been left in Denver. Not surprising really since we had three gate changes at the Denver airport. Mine wasn't the only luggage left behind and it's supposed to be delivered to my house today so no biggie other than the time waiting.

Because of the luggage snafu I didn't get home until 1:30. Everyone was asleep and the house was a sauna. At least it felt that way to me after two weeks in dry (yes, even with all the rain) and cool Seattle. I opened up more windows, uncovered Cal (Pooh comforter, cotton blanket *and* sheet--can we say pool of sweat?), and finished loading the dishwasher because the sink didn't smell good at all. Not sure how they could go all night without noticing that.

Finally crawled into bed a little after 2 only to have difficulty falling asleep. Mike has been having snoring issues lately and he's been diligently wearing the breathe right strips I bought for him. Didn't help last night because he started in with this truly inspiring series of snores. They were intermittent but loud enough that I had to move to the couch. I would have swapped Cal with my spot in the bed but I didn't relish the idea of sleeping in damp sheets.

I ended up moving to the couch instead and tossed and turned until the big thunderstorm hit. Nothing like a huge clap of thunder to shock you out of a fitful sleep. Once Mike got up to get ready for work I went back to my bed and slept for about an hour. Then Cal crawled into bed with me and gave me a big hug. If I'm going to have to be woken up that's a good way to do it. He also gave me the welcome home card he made the night before. Very keen.

Cal, of course, wasn't prepared to go back to sleep. I turned on Spongebob and tried to doze next to him. Didn't really make for good rest as you might imagine. We dragged our butts out of bed at 8 and I got us breakfast. Then as I was talking to E and laying on the couch around 9 I dozed off in the middle of the phone call. Snoring was a dead giveaway. I slept until almost 11 and felt much better. But I know I'll be going to bed early tonight.

Vacation Halts to a Close

Tamara is headed back to Oklahoma. Leaving behind one lonely buddy and lots of clean carpets. With the time difference she will arrive at the early hour of midnight. Vacation is grand until the time closes in and the end occurs. Back to reality of it all tomorrow. Back to the fun of work.

Enjoy your updates.

End of Vacation

Time seemed to slip by fast this last week. But at least I have clean carpets. One last evening with Tamara before she heads back to reality. Here's hoping time slows down, but accepting it won't.

Smaller update tonight, perhaps you can go back and read what you missed on last night's lot of words. Enjoy.

Almost Over

Well, my vacation is fast coming to an end. Soon I'll be immersed in soccer and t-ball and end of school preparations for the kids. Plus State Special Olympics is coming up the week I'm back. Mom will have to surive a few more days of being me. I bet she's ready to get back to her, as she puts it, boring routine.

I was able to accomplish cleaning all of E's carpets while I was here. She acts like it's a big deal but she's never had to clean my carpets. Hers were a breeze in comparison. I told her we should make that a regular thing when I visit for her birthday. She's skeptical.

We owe a big thanks to Thieving Magpie (owner of BuffynFaith.net) for the link suggestion to the Kim Possible Slash Archive. Who knew there was so much slash fiction written for this show?

Time continues on....

Vacations fly by way too quickly. Soon enough Tamara will head back to Oklahoma and I will once again have to crank up the web cam to chat with her. I love her visits but find sadness sets in as time comes closer to departure date.

We've completed the comic book shopping for this trip. Missed one of the major stores due to construction on the street right in front. It will have to wait until the next visit. But Okie had already been to that store a few times so it be okay.

Tamara has almost completed cleaning all my carpets. Now what kind of friend comes on vacation and does that? We've finished a few other household chores around the place as well. Now if she only knew more about electrical, plumbing and roofing I'd be in luck. Maybe next time.

One other note this evening...received a very nice note from Kali, I want to thank her for that. Plus she gave me a funny/interesting link which I think is worth sharing. The Desktop Icon War is silly fun, so enjoy it.

Hype Night

It's once again time for a few announcements from some of our favorite people.
Bedazzled Ink News

The spring edition of Khimairal Ink is up! We're pleased to present some new writers and welcome back some of our favorite ones.

Sometimes pictures don't always take the place of a thousand words. Bernadette Quailey's "The Photos" gives us a poignant snapshot of a mother looking at treasured pictures. Living through tumultuous teenage years can seem to last forever and sometimes hastily shouted words do make a difference. Q. Kelly gives us a glimpse of a silver-lining with her quirky tale, "The Lesbian Curse." Tyree Campbell once again draws you into a captivating tale about an archeologist finding arguably her greatest discovery and its repercussions with his tender story, "Sentimental." Kirsten Elliott's "The Prayer" gives us the hope of those spring flowers. Regardless of who you ask, you'll never know what will happen until you actually try it.

Our editor, Carrie, put together a free, online writer's class last month. We were pleasantly surprised to see over 90 people sign up and decided that we would leave the lessons up so other folks could benefit. You can access the class on Bedazzled Ink's home page: www.bedazzledink.com/bink-class.html. In addition, she also has updated and enhanced her blog with information about successfully published works of our contributors.

Also just in time for spring, the Bedazzled Ink Publishing Company's webpage has a new fresh look. We've converted our pages to blog form for easier navigation and uniformity. We've tweaked a few logos and added a new chap book series to our Nuance imprint called Zerynthia's Tales.

Enjoy!

That's it for the news, enjoy your updates. I'm off to eat pot roast. E thought she'd better provide me with meat on my visit so she bought a 4 1/2 lb. roast. I told her when I cooked a roast for me and the family it usually was around a 2 pounder. What a hoot. I see roast beef sandwiches in our future.

Free Piles

Tamara yesterday rambled about our trip to Value Village, however, she left out the free pile adventures. Mind you VV would not take many of the items I wanted to give them, hence they were just leftover crap that I had no idea what to do with.

At one time I lived on Capital Hill were the norm was to scribble on a piece of paper "Free" and tape it to a pile of stuff on the sidewalk. The system worked great. My junk is totally someone else's treasure. Now I live in the suburbs and that didn't seem like the thing to do. But grandma came through for us. She let me know that the people up the street from her place had an ongoing free pile. She had even placed free items there herself from time to time. Score on that.

We had two car trips full of stuff. We got the first unloaded quickly and headed home for more. On our way back to the pile with our second load we noticed a second free pile area. Some business had closed up shop and put a bunch of stuff on a sidewalk. Being slugs that we are we pulled right in and decided to enlarge their offerings a bit more. But of course being a "shiny object shopper" Tamara found some treasure in the free pile that my daughter will be excited about. Hence as she is pulling from the pile that owner comes out and offers up "more goods". No, I don't think so. Tamara quickly got back into the vehicle hoping we could get out of there before they realized we had added to their pile of crap.

We continued on to the first free pile to empty the rest of the vehicle's load.
Sure enough during the two hour break from our first load drop off someone had come and taken our offerings.

So keep your eyes peeled as you drive through your town, you never know what great thing is just waiting for you on the side of the road.

Now back to the regularly scheduled program. Enjoy your updates!
